The news is out and a “SuperStar” is in. Czechia have confirmed that ADONXS, winner of the Czech-Slovak edition of Idol, will sing at Eurovision 2025.

ADONXS — real name Adam Pavlovčin — only learned that he’d earned the gig last week. And on Tuesday, just a day before the public reveal, he sat down with me on Zoom to tell me all about his musical journey from Slovakia, where he was born and raised, to Prague, which he now calls home.

Adonis, of course, was the mortal lover of the goddesses Aphrodite and Persephone in Greek mythology. He was also considered the ideal of male beauty. But ADONXS tells me he adopted the name to boost his confidence, not to suggest his own beauty. It was akin to adopting a drag name.

“It was sort of a drag persona for myself while studying in London,” he says. “I didn’t feel very confident at first on stage and I wasn’t confident with my presence or body there. I love the drag community and that really helped give me confidence.” Please note: Adam is not a drag artist, just someone inspired by the craft and charisma of its performers.

You can watch the entire 35-minute interview with ADONXS from 12:00 London / 13:00 Prague on the Wiwibloggs YouTube channel. We discuss how he wrote his song, which is about reclaiming your power; how it defies genre and can’t be put in a single box; and what it was like becoming the first queer winner of a televised singing contest in the country.

Czechia: SuperStar winner ADONXS confirmed for Eurovision 2025 (PRESS RELEASE)

Czechia will once again participate in the largest song contest in 2025. ADONXS, whose real name is Adam Pavlovčin, a 29-year-old artist known not only as the last winner of SuperStar Czech-Slovakia (the Czech-Slovak iteration of the Idol franchise) from 2021, but also for his distinctive visual presentation and unique pop approach, will compete for the win at Eurovision. The upcoming international competition will be hosted in Basel, Switzerland next May. In a show of confidence & support, the national broadcaster, ČT, is moving the competition to their main ČT 1 channel.

The accolades of singer of the year, musical discovery or winner of a singing competition build the profile of ADONXS, who became the representative of Czechia at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. “First of all, I am really happy, participating in Eurovision has always been my big dream. At the same time, I feel a great responsibility to represent a country that has a great recent history in the competition, and which is my home,” says singer ADONXS.

Uncompromising, cheeky, sometimes cinematic and with room for dancing. This is how ADONXS describes the song with which he will compete for the crystal trophy in Basel next spring. “I have visualized this moment to a large extent and for the last year I have mainly focused on creating new songs, also with the ambition of Eurovision. I applied with several songs, and I am happy that one of them was ultimately successful and won it all. I can’t wait to be able to share the song with you,” ADONXS reveals.

The selection of the representative went through several thorough phases this year and worked in particular with the fact that Czech viewers cannot vote for their own song in the semi-finals or the grand final. “The candidates were first decided by a ten-member international jury consisting of five professionals from the field of music production and music composers and five former foreign representatives of Eurovision. The next part was quantitative research with more than nine hundred respondents from three foreign countries. “To ratify the voting result, we conducted another research through a focus group. And ADONXS was the clear winner in all aspects,” says Head of Media of Czechia Michal Utíkal.

Czech Television has chosen this process for the first time, betting on high chances of success. “We are all pleased that ADONXS came out as the winner. Eurovision has been his dream, and you could see it from our very first meetings– he was one step ahead and ready to work. Now we are all gearing up to deliver the best result for Czechia in the contest,” adds Ahmad Halloun, International PR and Comms Manager for Czechia at Eurovision.

Eurovision has been held annually since 1956, except for the coronavirus year 2020, and is the most watched non-sports television event in the world.

ADONXS has gained attention for his naturally deep voice, which is a characteristic feature of his work. However, as much as one of his biggest muses Orville Peck, ADONXS does not leave the listener hanging only in the bass register. He offers a strong stage presence, genre-bending performances, avant-garde pop vocabulary, as well as soulful vocals and emotional ballads. ADONXS grew up listening to the legends such as Queen, Depeche Mode, Elton John and Prince, and has cited Troye Sivan, Mahmood, AURORA, Josef Salvat, Sufjan Stevens, RAYE and Conan Gray as some of his current influences. In 2022, he released his debut album Age of Adonxs, won Singer of the Year and Musical Discovery from biggest Czech radio station Evropa 2, and was added to the prestigious Forbes list of young talents 30 under 30.

Beyond music, ADONXS is a passionate LGBTQ+ rights advocate, working to foster inclusivity and equal rights. From redefining the word love in his native language and making it more inclusive in every gender to being the face of major ad campaigns, he uses his platform to build a more tolerant society.

I am not surprised to read the comments here, and I agree with them. Eurovision should be about music. Now it has become a big circus.

What the fcuk are you talking about? There is nothing circus like about this act, just because he happens to be gay. If a female had these influences, you would not say the same thing. Homophobic ignorance continues. How sad.

Just because many people believe a certain thing doesn’t make it right. Case in point: the United States election.

It doesn’t change the fact that most people are tired of weidos that seek attention. A Merry Christmas to you.

Yikes! These comments are not it.

He looks very promising, I’m excited to see what he brings. I saw the interview where they announced the news to him and he’s so sweet as well! I’m sure he’ll make Czechia proud.

Also happy to see Slovak participation in the contest again (and one of the Vesna members was Slovak!). If he does well, it could garner more interest for Slovakia to come back to the contest which I would LOVE because Horehronie has still not been avenged.

I’m going to wait until the song is out to fully pass judgment. But the fact that his aesthetic immediately brings Nemo to my mind is not a promising sign.

I don’t know what is the solution, if it’s moderated it’s no more a free speech place… but sad to see that some people can’t moderate themselves…
I invite the esc artists to not to come here and to not read the comments unfortunately, even if there are still constructive comments here, the toxicity ruins everything.

Czechia is becoming worse and worse every year and they think they’re doing it right. When Ahmad said below teaser that the glove is giving Beyonce it immediately put me off. Pam Rabbit should have been selected tbh, or MYDY that was clearly robbed last year and public broadcaster pretended to be silly.

He seems a bit insecure, his voice is not as strong as for example Duncan’s, but with a good song who knows what will happen. With NEMO still in everyone ‘s mind, it might be a too risky choice, prove me wrong.

It doesnt need to be a strong voice. It is not a singing contest.
Unless he will sing a ballad the voice do not have to be that strong

I don’t know, Mustii did not qualify last year because of bad singing, the song itself was good enough to qualify, we shall see.

Well he definitely had potential and is talented in the vocal department. Listening to his songs, I think Czechia definitely have potential. However, Adam needs to not get carried away with his activism and focus on the music. Focus on giving us a song and show that we can all enjoy. Then maybe he will learn the mistakes of Mustii and many others similar to him from previous years.

Excuse me but I don’t think Mustii failed because of “activism”… Mustii didn’t cause any trouble during this Eurovision. The performance was just not good. It’s sad but it is all it is.

That’s not what i’m saying. I’m saying that there is a certain type of performance that turns off a lot of Eurovision watchers. At Eurovision, EVERYONE should feel welcome, even people you don’t like. Remember as well that it’s a family event.

Ultimately, it will depend on the song and the performance.

Nemo only came 5th in the public vote and Israel got tanked by the juries. The public winner last year was someone who wasn’t involved in ANY of the controversies.

Bettie

Unfortunately we will never know who was last years public winner because of the dq of Joost, and European right wing politicians and the Israeli government trying to influence the voting.

Last year’s public winner is the act who got most points from the televote, it’s as simple as that.

You can also say the juries put Israel where they belong since it was a very bland generic standard ballad. It’s only people stupid enough to fall for the Israeli campaing that helped it get 5th place

Smart move from Czechia, the guy is very talented, he has such a good voice, even if he’s not a big established artist yet, Czechia knows him well, Czechs know his name, and if you come in Eurovision with all the support of your own country, you already come stronger, it’s an advantage in Eurovision. Good luck ADONXS! Good luck Czechia!

OK but this thing had better not be in English. We like it when the Czech Republic sends songs in Czech. Case in point, they qualify and fare well. We don’t like it when they sennd songs in English (yuck!) When they do, they flop hard at Eurovision. A song in Czech or get out!

Mikolas Josef and, to a lesser extent, Lake Malawi would disagree… In fact the only song from Czechia that did well and wasn’t fully in English was the one from Vesna but the song was still like 50% English.
