For me the studio version of “Strobe lights” is amazing. It didn’t translate equally well during the showcase performance and I don’t think that the problem was the actual vocals but rather the sound mix so I hope this can improve. If not, I’m also very happy with “Désoleé” which I find both memorable and entertaining despite being a tad monotonous, and Mentissa already sells it well live. I don’t think that any of the other six songs has real chances, but I don’t hate any of them either, so overall that’s for me a rather enjoyable national final for… Read more »
It’s a decent selection but not sure why Belgium remains #1 in the odds. “Pull up” has the same melody as Chanel’s SloMo. Gloria gets my vote 🙂
1 Red Sebastian
2 Jelle van Dael
3 Mentissa
4 Leez
5 Grace
6 Le Manou
7 Lenn
8 Stefanie Callebaut
Strobe light is a good dance track. But jurors will massacre that vocal in the grand final (assuming it wins the NF)
And this is precisely why we need juries
Am i the only one who doesn’t like any of the songs?
Le Manou for me. As someone who lived through the mid 90’s as a teen, this song sounds so familiar! The looping organ sound that was so well known through some of the biggest house tracks of the 90’s is the backbone of ‘Fille à Papa’. It adds a wonderful nostalgic feel. I hope that she gets a performance together of this song, complete with dancers and some amazing LED’s and strobes. If anyone else loves the familiar ‘organ’ sound, look up the following tracks: *The Nightcrawlers – Push The Feeling On. *Wiles – So close *Waze & Odyssey –… Read more »
my personal choice is Mentissa –“Désolée”, plain song but there’s so many possibility of beautiful artistic staging on that kind of song, she does not need to dance or move too much just add glamour and surprises on stage and I already imagine it beautiful.
I still have traumas from Eurosong 2023 when Chérine and that wacky staging ruined her chances of going to Eurovision.. but then we got Gustaph who nailed every part and won against all odds, so staging can change EVERYTHING. If Red Sebastian has epic staging he will undoubtly go to Basel!
I recall not liking Gustaph at first but he shut everyone up and got an epic top 10 placement in Liverpool
And now that I had the chance to listen to all 8 songs, here is my ranking
1. Strobe Lights
2. Désolée
3. Fille à papa
4. Monster
5. Pull up
6. Perfectly Imperfect
7. Air Balloon
8. Gloria
Jelle Van Del should win.
red Sebastian is a great singer and his song is a jewel on the crown of Belgium, the land that brings you tomorrow land,…… it’s about a night out in the club,
having fun, it’s about the energy. No matter what, it is a great song and he’s a great artist. I have it on repeat all day long, it makes me smile, feel good and happy. If a song can achieve that then it is a good song,…to me anyway….?? and remember he’s a student of Gustaph,……..??
Finally a song about having fun in a club
His voice is not very pleasant, and the music not original.
At first listen I would have said Red Sebastian too, though the chorus is a bit of a let down, but have you really stopped to listen to Stefanie Callebaut’s performance of Gloria? Stefanie has that late 80s, early 90s edgy, femenine and rocky voice and the song is very elegant and different from the other, like it could be part of musical in Broadway or in the West End. I’d say she will eat the jury vote, I don’t know how the audience will react. I’m sure Stefanie live performance would be different from anything in May (even though… Read more »
Strobe Lights is excellent. So much energy and a fantastic vocal performance.
Now where did I put those glow sticks?
Strobe lights is going to be one of those songs hyped the Eurovision fandom but and top of the odds etc and ends up not qualifying cuz no one will vote for it. If people did not vote for “we will rave” they wont vote for it. The vocals are good but piercing and i cant find a hook. Its a song that some people really love and some really hate. I also dont see Eurovision juries going for this despite the voice cuz there r gonna be a lot of good singers in basel eventually.
Also I honestly think belgium has the best chance with Mentissa. I loved the song when i heard the snippet even though that was the first time i had heard of her. If they stage it like they did in 2016 this will definitely become a favourite. Remember 2016 everyone hated “whats the pressure” and then came belgium with that stageshow
Locals in most countries have an idea of what a Eurovision song should sound like, and tend to vote for that (in this case, Red Sebastian, who will undoubtedly win the televote). Once actual Eurovision shows up people in most countries vote for songs that they actually like and then the less obviously Eurovisiony songs do better.
We will rave is a better song, a better hook and people remember the chorus, besides this Kayleen had stage presence . Red Sebastian looks like he’s not really there, a bit distant
We Will Rave was too plastic. I’m pretty sure Red Sebastian will do better at Eurovision, he has more authenticity to him. It’s also more of a proper techno song rather than a pop song disguised as rave.
Nice bunch of songs. I’m shocked with the very weak voices from most contestants!
I expected way more of Mentissa, honestly her song is a bit of a letdown… it’s catchy but not strong enough, a shame cause I’m a big fan and she’s a fantastic artist. Her cover of ‘Rise like a phoenix’ was ten times better. For me Red Sebastian has the best chance of doing good at Eurovision, that rave part is EPIC, though I thought Jelle Van Dael nailed it too, very radio friendly and strong song that could work with clever staging.
I like the songs from LEEZ and Stefanie Callebaut most.
I honestly believe that Strobe Lights would bring another non qualification for Belgium. If it wins, i think it will probably stay on top with the bookies throughout the season, but I honestly don’t see it qualifying. In my opinion, Mentissa or even Le Manou have better chances of getting Belgium into the final.
Strobe light actually is a good song if it’s sing by another singer because the high notes with this singer (Sebastian) makes your ears bleed ,it sounds too sharp and irritating. Don’t get me wrong, he can sing but this song is not for him.
Red Sebastian is a good vocalist but the song is nothing particular, the composition and lyrics are very weak. It’s still a song contest and I think Mentissa’s song is just better, more catchy, it has a hook and interesting lyrics.
I personally love Gloria! Is the song about Gloria Hole, the drag queen? Hahaha
It’s about her daughter lol
(whose name is Gloria)
Ah. I see. Thank you!
it was definitely about her joystick
I can’t see any of these songs even qualify for the final
The lyrics are uninspiring and cringy
The vocals and stage presence of all performers are quite weak.
Of course they will elevate, but I don’t see a winning song.
A good selection of songs, but I don’t have a clear favourite, maybe Mentissa. My least favorite is strobe lights. The song misses a good hook, something to sing or dance along with, like Europapa or We will rave last year. He hits the notes, but I had a hard time remembering it once I heard it.
Grace or Mentissa for me.
Willem Vanderstichele is giving Jimmy Joker a run for his money … 5 out of the 8 songs are literary written/co-written by him! no wonder they sounded the same…
If you listen to the studio version of strobe lights it’s actually excellent and I think this is why they are currently top of the betting odds . There is no winner in this selection of songs though . He can sing for sure but strobe lights could end up like Belgium last year , something is missing , too much noise , perhaps it’s the techno beat and its lack of melody . This could be a non qualifier if chosen not because of the artist but the song itself .
I’m with you, it misses a soul, it’s techno beats combined with some spot on high notes but Sebastian himself is missing, it doesn’t make him shine.
Haven’t Belgium been on top of the odds for a long time now? I think they will not stay there.
Even Moldova had better songs than Belgium.
Mentissa and Le Manou have sweet songs, comfortable to listen to. I don’t like Strobe Lights a lot. The song doesn’t grab me and confuses me. Something is missing, maybe it’s too noisy for me.
I like Grace and Le Manou. The latter has the beat that is familiar to many ears across Europe. Following Luxembourg selection le Manou will add to this years style of retro feel songs.
Strobe Lights is chaos not a song
I’m getting quite tired of these annual sour reactions.
I guess the reactions are based on the ridiculous odds for Belgium, which have raised expectations a little too high. If you look at it objectively Belgium has a reasonable chance of a top-10 with Red Sebastian.
i’m sorry but this selection is weak
Nothing special there. Belgium selection is a big let down, considering how high it is placed among the bookers right now.
Honestly, I had a hard time sitting through these performances. The live voices are disturbing and the songs are all weak as it stands now. But knowing VRT, they will do a good job at revamping the winnimg entry. So, there is still hope, there might be a rough diamond waiting to be polished.
Why is Belgium on top of the odds? Really.
And why is Israel second in the odds as well and Sweden third? Have not even heard the songs !
Any info about Mans’ song? He’s sitting so confortable on top of the melfest odds, I wonder if the song is that good
I doubt his song is actually good but hype and track record are some of the parameters bookers use, allegedly
deflection is not an answer tho!
Wasn’t this ’cause there was a rumour going around that Joost Klein would go for Belgium?
“Strobe Lights” is a hot mess that makes my ears bleed. I am so over these pretentious entries!
