Italy has decided! After five nights of the Festival di Sanremo, the winner out of 29 participants is Olly with the song “Balorda nostalgia” (Bittersweet Nostalgia). The victory at the Festival di Sanremo gives them the opportunity to participate in Eurovision 2025, held in May in Basel.

The winner of Sanremo 2025 does not automatically become Italy’s Eurovision contestant, but is given first refusal of the opportunity. If the winner declines the invitation, then broadcaster Rai will offer it to the act in second place, then third place, and so on. We often get our first indication of what decisions have been made during the winner’s press conference on Sunday.

Tonight, Carlo Conti hosted the show alongside Italian TV presenter Alessandro Cattelan as well as actress and TV host Alessia Marcuzzi. The evening’s guests include Italian musician Gabry Ponte, actress Vanessa Scalera, football player Eduardo Bove, and singer-songwriter Antonello Venditti. Meanwhile, on the Suzuki Stage in Piazza Colombo, Tedua took the spotlight.

The stage of Teatro Ariston, as always, hosted well-known artists, former Eurovision participants, and newcomers, all performing with an orchestra.

All performances from the grand final are available to watch on RaiPlay.

Festival di Sanremo 2025: Night 5

Winner

According to the format of the show, Olly performed on four out of five nights. Speaking about the rankings, he was in the top five on the third night. Tonight, the vote was split between 33% radio jury, 33% press jury, and 34% televote. After successfully entering the Superfinal, Olly came first and won with Balorda Nostalgia out of the five contestants in the Superfinal.

The winning song speaks about the longing one feels for the past, contrasted with the realization that they must move forward. Olly performs it with all his soul, making it deeply relatable to the audience. It explores the emotions of reminiscing about old memories, relationships, and moments that have shaped him.

Here in Italy everyone is saying how awful Sanremo was this year. Barely any song stood out, definitely not this one. The only song that really was a hit was Tutta l’italia, which was actually the jingle. Very disappointing this year. Again, this is literally what everyone is talking about on the street here in Italy.

He’s worried he’ll get vilified by the press from his own country and turned into a laughing stock on Youtube. Experts must have told him his song is very likely to flop, which would be such a shocker for a country like Italy. He would be remembered for that forever. It would be such a stain on his career. Remember Italians were not very kind to Emma for many years after her performance at Eurovision. He’s already facing a lot of criticism for not deserving the victory at Sanremo.

Any Sanremo winner taking this long to say yes to Eurovision is likely NOT going. Is this 2016 all over again where the song that came 2nd goes to ESC?

According to reports in the Italian press, Olly may choose not to participate in Eurovision by not cancelling his sold-out tour in May. Lucio Corsi is also said to be preparing for Eurovision.

Now let’s not exaggerate. Georgia had as usual great vocals and she gave an impeccable delivery. I loved her. The lyrics of her song were deep but the musical composition itself was quite well meh. Lucio Corsi who came second had the deepest lyrics, that is why he received the Critics award. But again the musical composition was nothing out of the average or ordinary. There were around 5 songs which I really liked and I would have been happy if anyone of them won. Olly was also one of them. And imo he deserved to win, as the others… Read more »

By the way, he has made numerous misogynistic and homophobic comments through his music in the past.

Saw the entire festival and made some ranks in my mind, I feel that the manager modification affected a little bit the song selection (at least one singer stated that he presented his song 4 years ago to another manager and it got rejected). I am very surprised by the results. Olly was one of the favorites before the contest started but after song had been revealed, and later results were indicating Giorgia to win. I am not a fan of neither songs, but Giorgia was surely better, very high quality song and performance. But she does not need to prove that, it’s fact. Really feeling sad for Elodie, she deserved much higher position than 12th. In general, all female performers were extremely underrated. Some additional insides. Elodie was angry on the stage because Tony Effe has unvoluntarily damaged her dress in the minutes before her performance. They had an angry conversation. Tony Effe subsequently decided to leave Sanremo anticipately and fly to Rome. He will not attend Domenica In this afternoon. Additionally it seems these was an angry confrontation between Lucio Corsi and Carlo Conti. News appeared on some italian serious newspapers. Additionally, the Prime Time director of RAI, Ciannamea, said RAI is 100% open to Amadeus if he wants to return and host Sanremo once.

While I really appreciate and enjoy the alternative and modern approach to most Eurovision entries chosen so far, when you listen to them one after another I find this song from Italy quite refreshing (if it’s chosen for Eurovision) Yes its formulaic and may be viewed by some as a little old fashioned, but his pleasant tone and easy melody gives a little light relief from the sometimes craziness sometimes overly modern style from other entries.
