Italy has decided! After five nights of the Festival di Sanremo, the winner out of 29 participants is Olly with the song “Balorda nostalgia” (Bittersweet Nostalgia). The victory at the Festival di Sanremo gives them the opportunity to participate in Eurovision 2025, held in May in Basel.
The winner of Sanremo 2025 does not automatically become Italy’s Eurovision contestant, but is given first refusal of the opportunity. If the winner declines the invitation, then broadcaster Rai will offer it to the act in second place, then third place, and so on. We often get our first indication of what decisions have been made during the winner’s press conference on Sunday.
Tonight, Carlo Conti hosted the show alongside Italian TV presenter Alessandro Cattelan as well as actress and TV host Alessia Marcuzzi. The evening’s guests include Italian musician Gabry Ponte, actress Vanessa Scalera, football player Eduardo Bove, and singer-songwriter Antonello Venditti. Meanwhile, on the Suzuki Stage in Piazza Colombo, Tedua took the spotlight.
The stage of Teatro Ariston, as always, hosted well-known artists, former Eurovision participants, and newcomers, all performing with an orchestra.
All performances from the grand final are available to watch on RaiPlay.
Festival di Sanremo 2025: Night 5
Winner
According to the format of the show, Olly performed on four out of five nights. Speaking about the rankings, he was in the top five on the third night. Tonight, the vote was split between 33% radio jury, 33% press jury, and 34% televote. After successfully entering the Superfinal, Olly came first and won with Balorda Nostalgia out of the five contestants in the Superfinal.
The winning song speaks about the longing one feels for the past, contrasted with the realization that they must move forward. Olly performs it with all his soul, making it deeply relatable to the audience. It explores the emotions of reminiscing about old memories, relationships, and moments that have shaped him.

What do you think about the winner? Was Olly in your top? Who was your favorite tonight? Let us know in the comments below.
I’d love to see Italy bring something more innovative to Eurovision for a change. I think it’s time.

Here in Italy everyone is saying how awful Sanremo was this year. Barely any song stood out, definitely not this one. The only song that really was a hit was Tutta l’italia, which was actually the jingle. Very disappointing this year. Again, this is literally what everyone is talking about on the street here in Italy.

I think Lucio Corsi’s song is even worse than Olly’s! Both tracks are extremely boring.
He’s worried he’ll get vilified by the press from his own country and turned into a laughing stock on Youtube. Experts must have told him his song is very likely to flop, which would be such a shocker for a country like Italy. He would be remembered for that forever. It would be such a stain on his career. Remember Italians were not very kind to Emma for many years after her performance at Eurovision. He’s already facing a lot of criticism for not deserving the victory at Sanremo.

Any Sanremo winner taking this long to say yes to Eurovision is likely NOT going. Is this 2016 all over again where the song that came 2nd goes to ESC?
According to reports in the Italian press, Olly may choose not to participate in Eurovision by not cancelling his sold-out tour in May. Lucio Corsi is also said to be preparing for Eurovision.
Just saw this on a Eurovision-related Twitter account and Italian press website.

So I don’t think Rai can choose anyone from the top of 5, as it would look misogynistic. They need to opt for a lady. Or Coma Cose to appear more impartial.
Now let’s not exaggerate. Georgia had as usual great vocals and she gave an impeccable delivery. I loved her. The lyrics of her song were deep but the musical composition itself was quite well meh. Lucio Corsi who came second had the deepest lyrics, that is why he received the Critics award. But again the musical composition was nothing out of the average or ordinary. There were around 5 songs which I really liked and I would have been happy if anyone of them won. Olly was also one of them. And imo he deserved to win, as the others… Read more »

This just in: Balorda Nostalgia debuts at number 61 on the global Spotify chart with 2.19 million streams.
I hope he declines the ESC offer. He’s clearly not fit to take on the Eurovision challenge and his entry isn’t going to do well.
By the way, he has made numerous misogynistic and homophobic comments through his music in the past.
I don’t know if the rest of the acts in the top 5 have what it takes, ;last year was such a strong year but this year felt flat.
…so disappointed!
Supported Giorgia or at least Elodie (but with a different song in ESC) but surely not a fan of Olly. His song in Sanremo 2023 was definitely better.

Saw the entire festival and made some ranks in my mind, I feel that the manager modification affected a little bit the song selection (at least one singer stated that he presented his song 4 years ago to another manager and it got rejected). My top five would’ve been: 1- Fedez (for me is the only song of the top 10 that could have done something in ESC) 2- Olly 3- Simone Cristicchi 4- Coma_Cose (guilty pleasure since I’m a fan) 5- Giorgia or Achille Lauro I personally couldn’t see what made Giorgia’s song so amazing, she has a great… Read more »
Nina Zilli was selected internally, the same with Emma. I thougth Nina won in 2012 but she finished ~10th in sanremo. Emma didn’t even compete in sanremo 2014 (she was the winner in 2012).

I am very surprised by the results. Olly was one of the favorites before the contest started but after song had been revealed, and later results were indicating Giorgia to win. I am not a fan of neither songs, but Giorgia was surely better, very high quality song and performance. But she does not need to prove that, it’s fact. Really feeling sad for Elodie, she deserved much higher position than 12th. In general, all female performers were extremely underrated. Only Giorgia being in top-10 as a solo female perfomer, and in the end not finishing in top-5. Results are… Read more »

Congrats Olly, I remember clicking a lot to “Polvere” in Festival di Sanremo 2023. It’s a great achievement two years later. “Baldora nostalgia” also is a nice song I hope he’ll bring to Eurovision once processed the victory. Good luck from France. I saw our delegation and 2025′ representative Louane were in the crowd of Ariston last night, may the evening inspire them to transport this magical spirit of a music festival to French audience soon!
My guess is because Sanremo is not a national final and the reveal of all the songs in a span of 5 nights are not enough time for them to make any meaningful analytical videos about.
Måneskin goes international while Angelina has mental problem and needs to take a break. Not everyone goes international or they might lose their Italian market.

The “Italian song” from Estonia was much better, is that why it suddenly got deleted from the ESC channel? All these fishy moves from EBU are really annoying especially at such an early stage.
Boring song. *yawn*

From the top 5, Battito would be a better choice, though this is a weird year and it’s not clear at all how a classic Italian song will do. Olly is very charismatic, and with the right staging, it might do well.
We don’t know anything; that’s what always makes this part of Italy’s ESC selection really exciting. 🙂
Olly would be okay at ESC, though Rai has many different choices that it can run with this year. Good for them.
For those who have been complaining about Italy’s options this year: Look at what happened in Moldova. At least it’s not that bad, right?
Anyway, Rai could just select Gabry Ponte and have some fun.
That’s not true. If all acts already agree, why does he need one week to take a decision?

The songs is longer than ESC rules so needs to be adjusted. I would suggest totally rearranging it into a stripped back guitars/sax acoustic ballad. Olly has the Charisma to sell it and would definitely stand out in Basel!
If he can sing produce a vocal like that in Basel, then top six

Some additional insides. Elodie was angry on the stage because Tony Effe has unvoluntarily damaged her dress in the minutes before her performance. They had an angry conversation. Tony Effe subsequently decided to leave Sanremo anticipately and fly to Rome. He will not attend Domenica In this afternoon. Additionally it seems these was an angry confrontation between Lucio Corsi and Carlo Conti. News appeared on some italian serious newspapers. Additionally, the Prime Time director of RAI, Ciannamea, said RAI is 100% open to Amadeus if he wants to return and host Sanremo once.
No, that’s not the truth. Tony Effe performed in 7th place. Elodie as 20th. Probably Tony Effe damaged Elodie’s dress a few minutes before her performance. When she entered she was still very angry and everybody could notice that live.
Don’t worry. I know there are some weirdos here who like to give downvotes in a total random way. Even though I am just reporting a fact written in all newspapers.
Something about a joke misunderstood, presenting flowers to the wrong artist and angry words said backstage? As usual, the show must go on (and it did).
Guys, this thing about Elodie’s dress Is a fake news. She said that’s not true but a story invented by the journalists.

While I really appreciate and enjoy the alternative and modern approach to most Eurovision entries chosen so far, when you listen to them one after another I find this song from Italy quite refreshing (if it’s chosen for Eurovision) Yes its formulaic and may be viewed by some as a little old fashioned, but his pleasant tone and easy melody gives a little light relief from the sometimes craziness sometimes overly modern style from other entries. Well the rules clearly dictate the change will be given to the runner-up should Olly refuse, then the third, and so on, so…

I wasn’t aware of this rule you mention. I thought once the winner declines, RAI is completely free to choose whoever they want.

That’s low for a Sanremo win, if you look at recent years.
Olly has a scheduled tour that starts the 4th of May. He has concerts on 13th, 14th and 16th too.
Always the same comments after every Sanremo.
Olly can’t even sing. Sings out of tune the whole time. Plus, the odd looks and the lack of any charisma. Really, Italy? REALLY?
He has a fantastic voice, powerful song.
Hahaha he oozes charisma! Voice is good, warm and masculine, besides that ON key!
useless redneck

Agree; after Olly won; Italy fell in the odds 🙁
I think RAI should have preferred internal selection for this year.
Olly will get a week to decide on whether or not to go to ESC, apparently. (Link was blocked.)
I hope Olly would reject going to Eurovision or would choose another song rather than this song
He WILL go. What artist would say no to a global scene exposure!

Never have I thought that someone ever could, or would, use Moldova as a comparison to Italy, ever – in no way at all. LoL!!!
The organizer had already said that all acts had already agreed on representing Italy at ESC
Interesting, do you have a link to that statement?
Read that earlier but it seems not to be the case as I didn’t find anything related to it later
Easy to agree on something that seems highly unlikely anyways. Then suddenly you are in that situation and things might actually feel very different….
That’s not true. If all acts already agree, why does he need one week to take a decision?

As every other Italian entry before. Was not a problem for Marco or Mahmood
But Soldi is a very special song. And Brividi.
For me, this is quite generic. But also was Marco’s song and people loved it.
I ranked the winning song third LAST of all 28 entries after the first evening… it is soooo dull!
