Portugal was the last country to announce its representatives through a national selection. Festival da Canção 2025 closed the national selection season, and from Portugal, we have the indie band NAPA, competing in Basel at Eurovision 2025 with their authentic song about their homeland, “Deslocado.”

This year, predicting the Festival da Canção winner on the final night was nearly impossible. Portugal featured 12 songs in the final, and the results were incredibly tight. NAPA won by accumulating 7 points from the juries, placing 4th in their ranking, and 10 points from the public, who had them as their second favorite. Their victory was sealed, especially after Henka, the public’s top choice, received 0 points from the jury.

Portugal has won Eurovision only once, back in 2017, when Salvador Sobral took the trophy in record-breaking style. Could NAPA bring a second victory home?

Portugal at Eurovision 2025: 10 Facts about NAPA

1. They are from the island of Madeira

NAPA actually hail from the beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira, which is the largest island in the Madeira Archipelago. Known for its stunning landscapes and rich culture, Madeira serves as the perfect backdrop for the indie band’s unique sound.

2. They had a different band name

NAPA originally debuted under the name Men On The Couch in 2013. After ten years of making music, they underwent a rebranding, changing their name to NAPA in 2023.

3. Three out of five members have the same name

It must indeed be a bit confusing with three members named João! Luckily, each João has a second name to help differentiate them: João Guilherme Gomes, João Lourenço Gomes, João Rodrigues. The other two members of the band are Francisco Sousa and Diogo Góis.

4.  The band was born in basement

Who would have ever thought that a group of friends jamming in a basement would end up becoming so successful and competing in Eurovision? NAPA started as just a casual music project, with the members coming together to create music for fun. However, as they began sharing their sound with others, people quickly fell in love with their music, and their journey evolved into something much bigger than they could have imagined.

5. They have a concert movie

Following their national tour in Portugal in 2024, NAPA released a concert film titled O Mundo Continua a Girar (The World Keeps Spinning). The film was recorded over two sold-out nights at the iconic Maria Matos Theatre, capturing the energy and magic of their live performances.

6. They have stage experience

The band has a wealth of experience under their belt. Even though they haven’t appeared on televised shows much, NAPA has performed in numerous clubs, theaters, and concert halls across Portugal, as well as at various festivals.

7. Their first album was crowdfunding

In 2019, NAPA recorded their first album, Senso Comum (Common Sense). The album was made possible through a crowdfunding project, which successfully raised around €3,500 to support its production.

8. They are fans of some iconic bands

When asked about their musical inspirations, NAPA points to some very strong examples: Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beatles, and Arctic Monkeys.

9. Deeply inspired by some huge Brazilian singer-songwriters

Speaking of their musical sensibility, NAPA is deeply inspired by the styles of two legendary Brazilian singer-songwriters: Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim. Jobim, in particular, is renowned for composing the original version of the iconic song “The Girl from Ipanema” (Garota de Ipanema), a classic that has shaped the world of bossa nova and jazz.

10. Their Eurovision song, “Deslocado,” is deeply connected to their roots

The song speaks deeply about Madeira Island, capturing the feelings of living “displaced” on the mainland of Portugal. It also touches on the longing of Madeiran students who leave the island to study abroad, as well as the broader experience of Portuguese emigrants who had to leave the country in search of a better life. The cover art for the song features one of the earliest known photographic records of Madeira Island, taken between 1863 and 1885. This historic image is currently housed at the Madeira Photography Museum. The band shared that, in today’s world, they have the opportunity to see the world beyond the island. However, this broader perspective has only deepened their understanding of where home truly is.

Come back for more exciting stories and facts about NAPA as we head towards pre-parties and Basel 2025 itself.
