It’s history lesson time! Ireland is reaching for the stars at Eurovision 2025 with a song that’s, quite literally, out of this world. EMMY, the Norwegian turned Irish pop sensation, brings canine courage to the stage in Basel with her pop banger “Laika Party.”

Ireland at Eurovision 2025: EMMY with “Laika Party”

Hailing from Norway, EMMY — full name Emmy Kristine Guttulsrud Kristiansen — has been embraced by Ireland as their Eurovision heroine. Her Eurosong win on The Late Late Show marked a bold choice for RTÉ: a modern space-pop fable wrapped with hints of 90’s dance nostalgia, and genuine heart.

A synth-driven, dance-pop anthem, “Laika Party” isn’t just your standard bop — it’s a tearjerker with a beat, and a space-age fairy-tale told through the eyes of one of history’s most famous animals: Laika, the Soviet space dog who became the first living being to orbit Earth in 1957.

Yes, that Laika. But EMMY’s version isn’t a tragedy — it’s a cosmic celebration.

What do the “Laika Party” lyrics mean?

Who was Laika?

In 1957, Laika became the first creature launched into orbit — a stray dog from the streets of Moscow turned space pioneer. But her journey ended in tragedy: she never returned. EMMY takes that sombre origin and spins it into a dreamier possibility: what if Laika’s spirit still soars above us, tail wagging, throwing a never-ending party in the sky?

The lyrics paint that hopeful picture:

“I hope Laika never died and that she spins around us still and that she has a party in the air and always will”

It’s part eulogy, part pop anthem, and part children’s bedtime story.

Make no mistake: this isn’t novelty for novelty’s sake. The pulsing beat, the spaceship synths, and the almost whimsical imagery all orbit something deeper — a message about sacrifice, about exploration, and about unsung heroes.

With lines like: “Through the comets and the stones she is howling for her bones singing along to the stars and sun,” EMMY reimagines Laika not as a lost animal, but a cosmic pioneer leading the way for humanity. The song honours her with the reverence of a national hero.

But of course, there is a deeper side to the song. As we all know, Laika didn’t have a choice to soar into space. We all feel like Laika sometimes; alone, not knowing what’s next. But we keep going, we keep flying – even when it feels like we have no other choice.

And fly she will — straight into Eurovision 2025 semi-final 2, where she’s set to perform third in the running order.

(Ready for take-off)

You have probably heard
About this brave little girl
All we know is that she saved the world
She got sent away
But she wasn’t afraid
Though she was alone in the dark, big space

Left the cheering crowd
Went above the clouds
Rocket going high
Then they said goodbye
She still wonders why
But she loves to fly

I hope Laika never died and that she spins around us still
And that she has a party in the air and always will
I hope that she is dancing every night among the stars
I hope Laika is alive
Laika party in the sky
Laika party in the sky

Through the comets and the stones
She is howling for her bones
Singing along to the stars and sun
And if she didn’t fly
Nor would you and I
A forever hero for human kind

Left the cheering crowd
Went above the clouds
Rocket going high
Then they said goodbye
She still wonders why
But she loves to fly

I hope Laika never died and that she spins around us still
And that she has a party in the air and always will
I hope that she is dancing every night among the stars
I hope Laika is alive
Laika party in the sky
Laika party in the sky

If I drown out the incredibly stupid lyrics, I enjoy this song and gave it as a qualifier. Those lyrics though… urgh.

How about animal rights defenders? It’s like a dancing on a grave of a poor creature.
Also the vocals were terrible.

As an animal rights defender (I’m a vegan) I just love the meaning of the song. It’s a dream where Laïka is fine. By the way Emmy is an animal lover as well and she made this song because the true story of Laïka made her sad. The song isn’t just a bop: it’s also a tribute and a way to denounce animal cruelty. To me it deserves the TOP 10 or even the victory 🙂

I’m really supportive of everyone but God… This song is a disgrace. I would feel really ashamed to defend this entry. The whole lyrics are absolutely atrocious. And they aren’t naive but plainly dumb. We are flying thanks to all those crazy guys who risked their lives to create planes, not the soviets sending a poor dog to space decades later. I even find this lyrics quite permissive to animal cruelty. Ireland has disappointed me after the great work of Bambie Thug.

That is a very misguided take.

This song is appalling on every level. The sentiment is purile and the lyrics sound like they were written for a 12 year old’s English comp homework. Also, unless I am mistaken, nobody involved with this song has anything at all to do with Ireland, Emmy’s first visit to our shores was when she appeared on the late, late show Eurosong contest which she won by being the least of evils. Bambi did us proud last year and this song is the worst possible follow up there could be.

Erm no. The “Irish” writer is a Ru*sian lady who married an Irish chap and lives in Ireland now. Cop yourself on!

Well… is she an Irish citizen? That makes her Irish.

Well not really, the only one of the writers with an Irish connection was born in Russia and now lives in Ireland. All the others are foreign. TBH I think many Irish people are struggling to get behind this year’s entry but it’s got nothing to do with the quality of the song.

I remember the furore on the day after Wild Youth did not qualify. I expect similar venom if this is repeated, probably even worse this time. The “Irish people” seem to forget that these got their 12 points on selection night (which may been an (inebriated) “protest” against another contestant). Representing Ireland is a big responsibility so batten down the hatches if it goes wrong.

100%. RTE clearly saw something that NRK did not (song was also submitted in Norway). No shade on Emmy/EMMY but she is on a hiding to nothing.

It’s not a bad song but I very much doubt we will be anywhere near the dizzying heights of last year.

She’d sweet though, song is catchy.
Borderline qualifier.

Staging needs to be oomph to send this true and right now, from what I hear it doesn’t sound too exciting.

Kids watching at home might live it though and get their parents to vote for it I dunno.

She got sent away, But she wasn’t afraid’ are you kidding me? That poor dog must have been inconceivably terrified. And how she is supposed to have ‘saved the world’ is beyond me.

If you watch the music video, you will see that this song is a child’s dream, where everything is fine and where Laïka never died. The song is uptempo but it has a very deep and sad meaning, it shows that we have no choice but to dream to sweeten and embellish things, since the reality can be harsh.

“And if she didn’t fly, nor would you and I”. 😮 Who the hell is she addressing? Katy Perrys of the world?
I’m sorry…but my God, this id surely THE dumbest thing ever on ESC.

But aren’t most of the entries? With the sort of gushing going on here you’d think they were discussing the magnificence of one of Bach’s cello suites, or even some 70’s disco classic that we’re still dancing to 50 years later.

The song is both an adorable tribute to Laïka and a way to condemn animal cruelty. It manages to be happy and sad at the same time. It has a deep meaning: animal abuse is so widespread in this world that the only place where animals are at peace is in our dreams.
My Top 1, followed by Luxemburg, Austria and Albania!

To be honest, I think this would have been better if they HAD leaned into it being a rather depressing and hollow song at its core instead of saying its supposed to be inspirational. I think the vibe of childlike wonder the song carries would be better contrasted with cynicism and not naivety.
