Rehearsals for Eurovision 2025 are now in full swing for this year’s 37 competing nations. But over 70 participants of previous contests have come together to call for the exclusion of one of those — Israel.
In an open letter to Eurovision organisers at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the signatories from 12 different countries accuse Israeli broadcaster Kan of being “complicit in Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza”. The artists note that “by continuing to platform the representation of the Israeli state, the EBU is normalising and whitewashing its crimes”.
The list of singers, songwriters, lyricists and other creatives that have signed the letter includes previous Eurovision winners Salvador Sobral (Portugal 2017) and Charlie McGettigan (Ireland 1994).

Participants from Iceland — including Daði Freyr, Sylvia Night, Pollapönk, Systur, Svala, Paul Oscar and Hatari — comprise the largest proportion of signatories.
It comes after Iceland’s RÚV became the most recent competing broadcaster to share its opposition to Israel’s participation with the EBU. Slovenia’s RTVSLO and Spain’s RTVE have previously called for an open debate on Kan’s appearance at the contest.
This open letter is the latest of repeated calls from musicians, fans, unions, human rights activists, and other notable figures for Israel’s removal from Eurovision since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023. The conflict has seen more than 52,000 people killed in Gaza, with multiple organisations accusing Israel of committing war crimes and acts of genocide.
The war began when Hamas carried out an attack in southern Israel on 7 October 2023, during which 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
The EBU has consistently shut down all previous calls for Israel’s exclusion. They state that the event is a competition between public broadcasters rather than governments, noting the contest must remain apolitical.
Most recently, EBU Director General, Noel Curran, responded to a letter by 26 Members of the European Parliament that similarly called for Israel to be removed from the contest. Curran stated:
“Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is extended to all EBU member broadcasters. The Israeli broadcaster, Kan, is a full and active member of the EBU and is therefore eligible to take part. […] The EBU is also aligned with other international organizations, including sports unions and federations, that have similarly maintained their inclusive stance towards Israeli participants in major competitions at this time.”
Slovenian MEP, Matjaž Nemec, noted the EBU did not convince them with its arguments:
“Eurovision is supposed to celebrate music, unity and cultural diversity. When the EBU allows double standards and avoids a clear defence of fundamental human rights, it betrays the very values on which the event was built.”
Open letter in full: Eurovision participants call for Israel’s exclusion
We, the undersigned former Eurovision participants, urge all members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to demand the exclusion of KAN, the Israeli public broadcaster, from the Eurovision Song Contest. KAN is complicit in Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza and the decades-long regime of apartheid and military occupation against the entire Palestinian people.
We believe in the unifying power of music, which is why we refuse to allow music to be used as a tool to whitewash crimes against humanity. Last year, we were appalled that the EBU allowed Israel to participate while it continued its genocide in Gaza broadcast live for the world to see. The result was disastrous.
Rather than acknowledging the widespread criticism and reflecting on its own failures, the EBU responded by doubling down — granting total impunity to the Israeli delegation while repressing other artists and delegations, making the 2024 edition the most politicized, chaotic and unpleasant in the competition’s history.
Silence is not an option. When authoritarian movements and the far-right are on the rise around the globe, our duty to speak out has only become more pressing. We therefore join together to state that the EBU’s complicity with Israel’s genocide must stop.
By continuing to platform the representation of the Israeli state, the EBU is normalising and whitewashing its crimes. The EBU has already demonstrated that it is capable of taking measures, as in 2022, when it expelled Russia from the competition. We don’t accept this double standard regarding Israel.
We stand in solidarity with this year’s contestants and condemn the EBU’s repeated refusal to take responsibility.
As singers, songwriters, musicians and others who have had the privilege of participating in Eurovision, we urge the EBU and all its member broadcasters to act now and prevent further discredit and disruption to the festival: Israel must be excluded from Eurovision.

Always the same list of countries, yawn….
70 out of far more than 1000 is not spectacular. No artist from Germany, no artist from Austria joining the small bunch of folks bullying Israel.
No disrespect but put a sock in it. Why not use your power and organize a telethon for the people of Gaza where all proceeds go to charities and not to the hands of Hamas instead of signing meaningless petitions unless the signatories are so uneducated and gullible to believe that Hamas are somehow freedom fighters caring about the plight of their own people. If they did, they wouldn’t keep holding 59 hostages in underground tunnels which is why this endless and devestating war is being prolonged. Of course they wouldn’t mention the hostages because that’s just a footnote for… Read more »
Time will tell that EBU is definitely on the wrong side of history here. The number of dead Palestinians has reached 64,000 of which 70% were women and children (The Lancet). The number of wounded people is even larger. All casualties are a direct result of the Isreali invasion that broadcaster KAN supports wholeheartedly.
Which was caused by the brutal H@mas attack on October 7th killing over 1200 lives and traumatizing survivors like Yuval Raphael. You can criticize Israel’s conduct all you want, but don’t forget that if H@mas had not been successful, none of the destruction and bloodshed in G@za would be happening now. Sure, things weren’t great beforehand and I’d like to see an end to the occupation, but it’s worse now.
Israeli bullets may have signed their death certificates, but H@mas printed them up in the first place. Both sides played into each others’ hands.
The Israel government is outraged by the death of over 1200 dead Israelis, and righteously so. Killing people is never acceptable. But in what way then is murdering over 64,000 civilians as a reaction to Hamas’s atrocities – most of whom have nothing to do with Hamas – acceptable? The Israeli government should have been on the moral high ground here. Instead, they outdid the number of deaths caused by Hamas. Many times. And KAN has justified this. KAN also uses the ESC to give a very one-sided message about what has been happening in Gaza to the European viewers.… Read more »
No, because the victims of these atrocities are not on either side. They’re just normal everyday folk like you and me.
Do you speak Hebrew? Are you following KAN religiously? I don’t believe you. The numbers of innocent civilians dead and wounded in Gaza is atrocious whether the ones you mention are accurate or not. The casualties are a direct result of Hamas’ invasion of Israel and its attack on innocent Israeli civilians inside their homes while they were still asleep with the intent of butchering them in cold blood with glee including babies and children while taking 251 people, mostly civilians, including foreign nationals, as hostages. Now, Should Israel be banned after more than 19 months of war? yes, if… Read more »
Killing innocent civilians is never an acceptable answer to atrocities committed to “your side”. And if you go down the road of action-reaction, you have to be consistent and go all the way down to 1948, when Palestine was given away by the British to the Jewish people. Then 85% of the Palestinians living there were expelled or fled. And since then, a chain reaction of horrors has happened, originating from both sides. Mind you that one people’s “terrorist” is basically the other people’s “freedom fighter”. The choice of words depends very much on whose side you are on. And… Read more »
You’re factually wrong on the 85% figure to begin with and you’re simplifying matters in a very one-dimensional and slanted manner based on your own prejudices. This is not about sides. Nonetheless I’m against Israel’s participation next year if its government continues its war crimes in Gaza. I consider Netanyahu to be a war criminal.
Why all the people against Israel’s participation at ESC don’t decide to not watch the show? If you commit, you should DO something instead of just Talk.
If it’s YOUR house, and a person came in to YOUR house, YOU are not responsible to remove yourself from YOUR house.
The same way fans should not be expected to let a killer state bully them out of watching THEIR own Eurovision.
Eurovision was founded on peace, and now Israel has killed over 60.000 people in the blink of an eye. They should never be welcomed back ever again.
So no one from Ukraine, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and many other countries.
Just a bunch of Icelanders and a few others.
Iceland, you know that country not gonna be in the final this year either lol
This American would 100% support these artists. They are right to stand up against g e n o c I d e. Israel must be banned and ostracized on the world stage for their crimes, make it clear that they are not supported.
You Will cry when they finish top 5 with the televote.
It’s deplorable that Israel is in this competition – it’s time for Europe to show its hand
Let us remember ESC was created to bring together the European countries after the war. The fact that a non-european country is causing so much division in ESC says a lot. The voices are growing every day as the world wakes up to the realities of what is happening.
Too little too late. That country’s participation will be a stain in ESC history, for years to come.
While I feel it is too late for Israel to be banned from the contest this year, the EBU seriously need to consider it going forward. I feel the EBU haven’t properly thought through what will actually happen if Israel actually went on to win the contest and by allowing them to participate, they always run that risk. I know if they won, it would cause a lot of hurt to many of the dedicated core fan base who are opposed to Israel being in the contest. Also if they did win, the EBU have will have no legs to… Read more »
It’s never too late if EBU decided to banned Israel. EBU disqualified The Netherlands ( Joost Klein ) last year in the last minute before the final,so the bottom line and decision is up to EBU.
So I guess when Martin Green sees if Israel potentially wants to promote ads to gain televotes, this could end up with disqualification from the competition prior to the live events. The Code of Conduct and the Swiss broadcaster say that the voting must be “FairPlay”.
USA supports Israel. Official EU and therefore EBU follow USA policy and also support Israel. Anyone can complain and write as much as you like letters and petitions but nothing will change until US and EU policy is to support Israel. That’s the way the World looks like.
70 singers to not listen anymore.
Those irrelevant has beens need to xakm down . This is getting beyond pathetic now !
I respect the artists taking a stand. But I also hope future discussions include victims of violence worldwide — in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. If we’re calling for justice, let’s ensure it’s consistent. Otherwise, it risks looking selective, which weakens the message.
Sudan, India, Pakistan etc are not members of EBU.
The only reason why Russia was expelled was the fact 10 or more countries threated EBU with withdrawing in case Russia stayed. With Israel no country has done similar. And also, one of the key EBU sponsors is you know who. So, there is no really morality or rules behind, including “KAN is a member so they can participate”. It’s simply the game of power. If 5,6,7… countries decide to leave because Israel is here, then we will have different cards on the table. So far Israel has managed to pinkwash itself and played antisemmitism card really well so nobody… Read more »
I respect the artists who have chosen to speak out about their concerns. At the same time, I hope we can also extend our compassion and concern to all victims of violence around the world—whether in the Middle East, Africa, or elsewhere. If we truly stand for peace and justice, it’s important that our voices reflect a consistent care for humanity, wherever suffering occurs.
im getting sick of the argument being “KAN and israel should be in bc israel is the victim of this war” vs “KAN is supporting the genocide”. is it not blatantly obvious that irrespective of what is going on in Gaza KAN should be disqualified for their atrocious attitude towards other countries’entrants last year? they literally broadcast their team insulting participants–how can the ebu see past that?
Hypocrisy shines here. They would welcome Turkey with open arms anytime it chooses to return and had no problem with Turkey participating for 40 years in ESC despite illegally occupying half of Cyprus since 1974 and only Greece boycotted Esc once for Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus but if it is not Ukraine or Palestine there is no agenda to show solidarity. Also a Turkey exparticipant (hadise) complaining about Israel infringing human rights of Palestinians when her country has been depriving Cypriot people from their legitimate homes for 51 years now in the north so called state recognized by no country… Read more »
Well said. The hypocrisy is blatant.
Have you asked the their opinion on Turkey?
Thought not.
I don’t think you know what you are talking about and you compare two situations similar in some respects, but very different in others. Yes, Turkey occupies northern Cyprus but not in the way Israel occupies Palestine, in terms of the reasons behind the origins and continuation of occupation, the extent of it, or the attitudes of local Cypriots (Greek Cypriots *and* Turkish Cypriots) as opposed to how these play out in Palestine.
You don’t know history…at all
Read history first and what Turkey did to Cypriots back then…and what Azerbaijan does to Armenia
1. Only because Hadise is Turkish doesn’t mean she supports what’s going on in Cyprus.
2. It isn’t stated anywhere that any of these people would support the return of Türkiye to the contest.
3. Each passing year sees the fight for human rights increasingly widespread. Only because the broadcasters or people participating at Eurovision in any form didn’t di something X years ago, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do it now.
If your media and their political parties informed you each day with other things that have been happening in the world and not just brainwashing you with their agenda for which they get paid for, you would understand.
Ah, right. Sorry for trying to discuss anything with you, my enlightened lord. You keep being the only thinking being in the world, have fun.
Turkey or Turkish Cypriots are not trying to wipe out an entire population.
Tell it to the Kurdish peoplw
What a list! ?it’s really the who’s and who’s of who was available
EBU will keep their heads in the send. Israel is going to win eurovision 2025 with their ironic caged bird staging and then finally the EBU has the problem on their board that they want so badly.
Just no. The country is at war. The 2026 edition won’t come to Israel, just because Kan cannot guarantee the safety of the staff, the contestants and the visitors, same as for Ukraine 2023. I don’t see a problem here.
EBU will keep their heads in the send. Israel is going to win eurovision 2025 with their ironic caged bird staging and then finally the EBU has the big ahh problem they want so bad.
Doing this one week before the contest starts when it’s way too late to do anything, is a bit like when I offer to help my Mom pack the shopping away when she’s about to finish. It makes them look good and virtuous without really doing anything. I imagine a lot of people calling for boycott will still watch the contest and still vote. So if people can’t go without Eurovision, when it would cost them nothing to do so, then why would the EBU do anything? If the issue with Israel was more important than you getting to see… Read more »
The thing is, those calls started before Eurovision 2024 and they’re being repeated every now and then – unfortunately to no avail so far. It’s never too late to take action.
that’s 70 less possible interval acts given that EBU would rather stick their head in the sand
Laura Tesoro also participated in a movement to speak up for Gz.
Do you still support conservatism in the US, esc_fl?
A LOT has changed in my political views. Barely recognizable.
I’m proud of you!
No joke.
Once again most of the noise is coming from the same few countries led by Iceland (RUV).
30 From Iceland!
10 Finland
6 Slovenia
But so quiet from Spain (RTVE) -0
Do the math.
Let’s get on with the show.
Most of the planet recognizes and condemns what is happening.
Are you American, Max?
No matter how you look at it, in ESC CIRCLES it’s the same countries (their collective TV broadcasters, governments and artists in unison) over and over. Namely: Iceland (by far), Finland and Slovenia.
I’m Actually Irish.
So broadcasters with a spine?
Ireland recognizes Palestine as a state, Bambie Thug was very outspoken last year… so I really don’t get your point.
It’s possible to get on with the show and also condemn the actions of the Netanyahu government. Not mutually exclusive. Every person on this petition wants to get on with the show.
P.S. My question was just that, a question. I didn’t mean to suggest all Americans are dumb. Only 65 million of them are. As fir the rest, I genuinely feel for them.
the EBU only expelled Russia from Eurovision 2022 because of pressure from other broadcasters, because they initially did not kick them out even after they first invaded Ukraine, trying to be all “everybody is welcome here on this non-political space.” The passage of three years might feel like the EBU made an immediate action towards Russia but it actually took 36 hours later to boot the country out after outcry and even threats to withdraw to avoid competing with Russia. no matter how many calls and petitions are made, I don’t think any action is gonna be taken to expel… Read more »
p.s. yes that’s right but during the first 36 hours most of the world didn’t know how to react….
That is true, but I think some organizations banned Russia faster than the EBU did. We also don’t have many the same organizations that banned Russia banning Israel right now, despite demands.
Remember in 2019, when the fake backwards robot AI points gave Israel a 12?
Please God, don’t let that happen again. My worst Eurovision nightmare is the algorithm votes deciding the winner in a close year. If they give it to Israel, that would only make it even worse and perhaps lead to the death of the contest.
Which turned out to be not real because they stupidly posted the bottom 10 results of the aggregate jury vote for Belarus instead of the top 10 because the Belarusian jurors were stupid enough to discuss the semi results before the final and were disqualified because they broke the rules
Fake is fake, top or bottom. I really HATE these robot scores and still fail to understand why they even exist.
Without them the contest may not have taken in place in Liverpool 2023
I know, right? I’ve been foretelling of the dangers of fake points for years. Nobody has listened. 🙁
I pity the spokesperson‘s who might be put in an awkward position of announcing the 12 points to Israel if their country’s jury put Israel on top. Granted, just like last year, I don’t think this is Israel’s best song they ever sent, nor do I think it’s good enough to capture any eight, 10, or 12 points from the jury. But you never know.
I also don’t want Israel to win for the reasons you’re stating. It would really cause chaos.
I wonder if a spokesperson might ealk out instead of giving 12 to Israel. Enter Martin with”technical difficulties”.
Walk out
It wasn’t an AI robot, it was a human mistake. The rule for these aggravated scores when a country is barred from voting for any reason, is that you take rankings from the previous X years, made by countries with similar voting patterns, and create a ranking based on that. Israel got 12 points back then because due to a human mistake the ranking was reversed. After a couple of days someone noticed it and the EBU rectified the official scores, therefore Israel got 0 points for finishing last with the country in question. As for why these scores even… Read more »
“KAN is complicit in.. the decades-long regime of apartheid…”
Is it really, though? KAN has only existed for eight years, since 2017. Before that, it was IBA, who Bibi shut down because it dared question him and practice actual journalism.
He’s still not a big fan of KAN either.
What a bunch of bs. Israel is a victim here. I’m disappointed in those artists.
They started out as victims. They were justified in retaliating.
Then their leaders decided to commit war crimes and acts of genocide.
Not everyone in Gaza is a terrorist. The vast majority are just regular people trying to survive despite the short-sightedness of the country’s ‘leaders’.
yes very true, but i’m gonna vote for them in the grand final, and i love Queen Yuval, so gorgeous and so talented
I just remembered Charlie McGettigan also boycotted last year. The 30th anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids, and Paul Harrington announced the Irish points alone. Respect.
I still think 2012 is the most unpleasant in the contest’s history, though. 2024 may have been indirectly supporting evil, but 2012 was DIRECTLY supporting it.
Kan are not covering the current terror fairly and comprehensively. Which amounts to propaganda, enabling an evil mass slaughter. For this reason, Israel should be OUT. Human life matters.
Bunch of ignorant people who have no clue regarding the middle east.
Good luck for us all
What a list! I see it’s the who’s who of who was available
This is beautiful to see, even if it’s long overdue. I also remember Laura Tesoro participating in a campaign in Belgium to speak up for Palestine.
If the EBU ignores this, I don’t know what it’s going to take to suspend KAN. Only thing I can think of is an absolute change of leadership in the EBU.
70 attention clowns
pls ISRAEL win
if you are a real Eurovision fan then you know Israeli victory at this moment would actually destroy Eurovision. Should I explain why?!
Oh no, performative activism! Whatever will we do now?
I don’t know, Chill.
What do YOU do to help the innocent civilians of Palestine?
Oh For god sakes, let it go…It won’t happen….! The EBU clearly stated that….!
Sylvia Night, still a queen I see.
What I will say as a side note is that the EBU must ensure fair play already prior to the contest. I’m getting targeted ads on YouTube to vote for Israel. I think there should be restrictions and oversight when it to comes to aggressive voting campaigns. Naive me still thinks the song should be voted on, not the country. These campaigns are clearly for the country, not the song.
I’ve never seen any ad campaign, not even in US politics, as aggressive as what Israel’s doing for this?
Want us to vote for you? Send a good song!!!
These campaigns seem to work, sadly. In theory, Israel (or any other country) could top the televote even though most of its voters have never even heard the song. Sad.
To be fair, people voted for Ukraine in 2022 without hearing the song, and at least in my country, we had celebrities urging people to vote for Ukraine to show solidarity.
The only standards these people have are double standards.
We’ve seen last year that over a million euros in ads was not enough to win televote over Croatia. Sweden this year is a bigger banger than Croatia (I’m croatian) so I think we are good. They can try and spend as much money as they will on propaganda but it doesn’t change the fact that they send mediocre ballads.
I’ve been thinking of an idea to have a 5 vote maximum limit that you can allocate towards one country out of the 20 votes you get, to spread around more votes and points to other countries. Maybe that could counteract some of the landslide victories we’ve been seeing lately?
Or just cut it down to 5 votes max. Not 20.
Or 10 votes total. I think they have a lot of votes per person to earn as much money as an income avenue and give people wiggle room for choices.
When I was voting last year as the rest of the world voter, I found out that I was paying $20 for all 20 votes and ended up reducing the amount of votes I contributed by the time I got to the final to not spend so much money. I think that could be easily abused without a limit.
The EBU should donate all voting money to Unicef. Or else have two different prices, like Melodifestivalen – a regular rate, and a higher rate which goes to charity. Options.
No promo for [country]! Let’s vote other countries to ensure [country] to not win at 2nd senmfinal!
Let’s vote for our favourites!
