Cool us down please, because Poland just put on one of the fiercest national finals of the entire year – and dropped one of the biggest surprises in the process. We went in to Krajowe Eliminacje with high expectations and an expectation that Margaret would slay the pack. But after all nine songs had been performed, it was Michal Szpak with “Color of Your Life” who won the ticket to Stockholm.

Watch: Michal Szpak — “Color of Your Life”

Check out the Color of Your Life lyrics here

Krajowe Eliminacje 2016 Result

1. Michal Szpak — “Color of Your Life” 35%
2. Margaret – “Cool Me Down” 24%
3. Edyta Gorniak – “Grateful” 18%

The final was widely expected to be a close contest between Margaret and Edyta Gorniak. The bookmakers, meanwhile, had already placed their bets on Margaret being victorious with “Cool Me Down”. In the end though, both ended up runners up to Michal!

Poland are currently sitting high at the top of the odds tables, having climbed ahead of Russia in late February. Obviously, with Michal now as winner, it will be interesting to see what happens to the odds in the coming days.

The decision ultimately came down to a 100% public vote. Before the contest, it was confirmed that whilst the public could vote as many times as they wanted, only the first vote would ultimately count towards crowning the winner. All other votes would then go to awarding a secondary prize. This was used to avoid the chance of any act rigging the televote by mass voting — a smart move perhaps by TVP.

6. Ola Gintrowska — “Missing”

I would like to understand why Europe rejects Polish choice. From what I read, there was a great expectation on Margareth, which, in fact, meets the taste of the common euro-fan. Now, an expectation becomes a reality is something totally different. I could hear both versions; the album version and the “live” one (before YouTube blocked NF show’s audio… why no one asks about such blocking, huh ???): the difference is abysmal. She does not have good live performance. And to be honest, not good singer she is. I’m sorry to say this. I must recall that Polish final was… Read more »

I’m so angry that Margaret hasn’t won. I think Poles have forgotten what Eurovision SONG Contest means. They thought it’s something like The Voice so they have to choose the best one. Of course, Michal’s live performance was better than Margaret’s, but his song doesn’t have a chance to reach the top 10 in the final. It will be a miracle if Poland qualifies to the final at all…

We love Michal Szpak’s song and his voice. It is much better then this plastic and atrificial product like Margaret is. Even if we don’t win… we are proud of him. Listen to the words his song.

Most people still do not have their favorites. A large number of comments under articles with Michal Szpak on wiwibloggs and eurovision.tv can help him.

Maybe the Czech Republic should scrap what they’re doing and internally select Margaret… At least they’ll see their first final!

HEY!! What’d I miss? Was it really that bad for Poland to drop like an anvil from the top of the bookies’ board (BetFair)? When I read that Margaret had a lousy live performance a week or two before this contest, I knew there was trouble ahead, and that Edyta would have to win this thing to keep Poland from falling out of the top 10.

Has anyone else mentioned Kasia Mos? I thought she was stunning as well, and could be a future winner of ESC with the right song! Well done, Kasia; you have at least one fan here. 🙂

Even if you have millions of signed petitions…Margaret will not go to eurovision. Michal will and will show you all he will qualify and get a decent result for Poland.

Davve: You need to get off your high horse because I don’t think you understand my point here at all. If you were pointing at my first comment, then let me say that I wasn’t forcing others to adjust from Margaret’s defeat, hence why I said “I hope” on the sentence. Also, are you disregarding my right to have the same amount of freedom of speech then? From what you are saying here, I did not know that freedom of speech in Europe could entitle Europeans to make comments like demanding someone (like ESC and their rules) to focus on… Read more »

Ok, still in shock from yesterdays announcement! No Micha? Szpak is not the best representative in any measure to send to Eurovision in comparison to Margaret! I don’t buy any comment saying she was out of tune in any way, I saw it myself and Margaret sang it well! Yes, Michal sang very well, but his act as a whole is not the better for Eurovision. And all comments about everyone voting for Margaret just for her looks are so silly, yes she looks good, but it’s the song that really stands out and she would’ve brought it big time… Read more »

Why didnt TVP just internally select either Margaret och Edyta.. that would have been a much better solution.

Margaret was favorite yesterday, but today she is lost for many people and much more doubtful. Even if Michal Szpak will be cancelled, Margaret will not have the same hype as she could have if she won yesterday. Defeat is defeat.

Why Eurovision is dead? Because now it is too complicated! “Experts” ruined it, because they are not in fact experts of Eurovision Song Contest, but they are experts of bad complications.

I think the polish public definitely went for the best singer of the night. Personally I thought Margaret had the best overall package (even with a lot of help from her backing vocalists), but it’s clear she doesn’t have the personality to pull this off and she is no ESC winning material. Not at all impressed with Edyta’s performance last night either. At least, we had Estonia choosing a real class act yesterday. I can’t believe a guy as young as him is such a mature singer and performer. Well done Estonia for a second year in a row! My… Read more »

I’m sorry but this isn’t going to win. Szpak’s song is like listening ballads in early 90. Outdated, tired, and very bad English. Nothing can cool me down.

urgh why does everyone send their second/third best to eurovision?! UK, denmark, finland and now poland! *smh*

his voice is great… sounds a little like marc anthony. the song, however, is so boring. crossing my finger that they will come to their senses in the coming days and let him change his song. 🙁

Actually I’m a bit dissapointed, because I wanted to see Margaret preform in Stockholm, just to see her finishing between 10-20, or not even making the grand final. Now polish trolls will say forever that they produced a ESC winner, but they were just too dumb to select her to represent Poland, and it was rigged, etc etc

People! Cut it out, he was the best in the terms of singing yesterday. It wasn’t a day of edyta or margaret but micha?’s. Margaret would never succed live with that song in Stockholm big stage. I think she’s inmature for eurovision, in the question of artistry. And i want to answer some utter thoughts, yes poland is quite conservative, but it was a miracle that Szpak won because he always portrays himself as a queer. And i’m very fine with that. And Margaret too scandalous? She hates colored people so she would be great for our “conservative” society.

Terrible- I think Poland panicked when they become the favourites to win ESC 2016; they do not want the expense of hosting ESC 2017, so rigged the results for this utter tripe to win!!!
