Aron Hannes Tonight
Aron Hannes Tonight

Earlier today, the Wiwi Jury – our in-house panel of music unprofessionals – got lost exploring Skaftafell Ice Cave in Vatnajökull National Park. With so much time on our hands, we decided to review “Tonight”,  Aron Hannes’ entry for Söngvakeppnin 2017. Did his song impress? Or were we looking forward to tomorrow? Read on to find out…

Aron Hannes – “Tonight”

About Aron Hannes

Aron Hannes debuts at Söngvakeppnin this year, but he’s coming with an experienced team behind him. His composer Sveinn Rúnar previously wrote Jónsi’s “Heaven” in 2004 and Eiríkur Hauksson’s “Valentine Lost” in 2007, and he’s competed several times in the past himself. Will Aron be lucky number three for the composer?

“Tonight” reviews

Robyn: “Tonight” is a well-produced modern pop song. But that’s all it is. It’s generic, it’s anonymous and it could come from anywhere. It also has the big issue of 2017 — the instrumental pop drop which leaves the singer silent and alone at several points in the song. Sending this to Eurovision would be lazy. Iceland can do better.

Score: 6/10

Jason: Aron Hannes is serving 2017 pop, and I am feeling it. Although “Tonight” doesn’t break any boundaries, it is sleek and radio ready, and would appeal to the younger viewer for sure. Perhaps it is a tad generic for Eurovision, but it is definitely a decent effort, and 100% enjoyable.

Score: 7/10

Chris: A good pop song is something we can all be thankful for. Sure, a slightly tropical beat in an Icelandic final does seem a little out of place. Aron also doesn’t quite look like he’ll fit the part either, but I’m willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt. I enjoy all three minutes and that’s good enough for me.

Score: 6/10

William: Points for that slick Nordic production, which smacks of Justs’ “Heartbeat” — and so many other songs we’ve heard in the past year. Unfortunately Aron’s “Tonight” lacks originality and drive, and it exhausts all of its ideas within a minute. The digital ghouls sound out of place and feel somewhat intrusive. He talks about setting the place on fire, but I’m afraid there isn’t a spark in sight.

Score: 4/10

Forrest: When I first heard “Tonight”, I had to double check that I was listening to a Söngvakeppnin entry and not something from Melodifestivalen. It’s not often you hear this kind of highly produced pop in Iceland’s national selection, and perhaps for good reason. The problem is that this is exceedingly generic – it’s catchy enough to grab your attention while you’re listening, but good luck trying to remember it ten minutes later.

Score: 6/10

Dayana: Way too pop for Söngvakeppnin, don’t you think? Well, to be honest, I am loving how “Tonight” diversifies the Icelandic national selection. And, I have to admit, it’s not just a pop song…it’s a pop song of a great quality! Bow down to Aron for bringing modern tunes to the Söngvakeppnin.

Score: 7.5/10

Mikhail: When I first turned “Tonight” on, I started moving my body, totally enjoying the song. But then I stopped when I heard the chorus, which was a bit of a let down, because I didn’t want to slow down. The song became a bit repetitive and by the end I didn’t care much, to be honest. However, the production is great, I’ll give you that much.

Score: 6/10

Deban: “Tonight” may contain all the right ingredients for a stellar radio-friendly number, but much of it is quick-fried. Modern pop that isn’t well seasoned or particularly well thought-out lacks drive and excitement. Aron Hannes could be anybody, and that’s part of the problem. In an industry where there is a limitless headcount, “anybody” often translates as “nobody”.

Score: 5/10

This is a summer song we could listen from a south country. Instead it comes from Iceland. I’m not impressed, but it creates a good mood. I like it.

This is such a typical Eurovision song, but one done right. It’s sleak, memorable and brings good energy. It reminds me of 2012. Maltese entry and if Aron can channel Kurt’s energy in live, this could do wonders. Surprisingly it gets an 8/10 for me.

It’s enjoyable but doesn’t really impress me. There are better options for Iceland.

Each NF has to have a song with uninspired tonight/light/night etc lyrics, it seems. It’s very uninteresting, almost annoying. The sound doesn’t match his face also.
