We might not know what the future holds for Armenian supergroup Genealogy, but one thing is for sure: the solo members are keeping busy. Stephanie Topalian and Vahe Tilbian have both released solo versions of “Face the Shadow”, the band’s Eurovision 2015 entry.
Stephanie Topalian — “Face the Shadow”
Stephanie’s cover features guitars and drums, with a mash-up halfway through as the guitar riffs some chords from “Sweet Home Alabama“. It’s unexpected but really works, toning down the drama we saw on stage in Vienna.
Best of all: Stephanie can sing, y’all! Based on this version, her vocals did not feature as much as they should have in the original version of the song. This is all about our favourite Japanese-Armenian star making sure she gets heard and we are all for it.
Vahe Tilbian — “Face the Shadow”
Vahe’s cover is more stripped back, but has its own interesting quirks. He throws in an Armenian-language chorus, something the full band never did. We’d love to hear the entire song performed in Armenian: that would show the enduring bond of the group’s members, no matter which part of the world they live in now. Despite keeping it simple, Vahe maintains the drama. J’adore!
Given the strength of these two versions, and of Tamar Kaprelian’s acoustic streetside cover, we just have to ask: who performed “Face the Shadow” best? After all, what’s a little healthy competition between bandmates? (We’re sure their friendship will last…they send each other share cat photos.)

Stephanie was my favorite member of Genealogy. She seemed to be the most charismatic one out of the rest of them. Her facial expressions during Face The Shadow performance at Eurovision were fab. Hope she releases some new material soon in Japan(J-pop fan here) soon!
I remember Essai has once sang his own version while playing the piano. Tamar’s version released in previous weeks, very comfortable indeed.
Stephanie’s version is just what I think she can do while being the only vocal, and I love Vahe’s version 🙂 I find out myself being really enjoyed while he’s singing!
Dont forget about Mary-Jean, she wrote a Welsh language version and performed it with her husband on the Welsh TV show Heno, it was really good! Not sure if it’s on YouTube though, Heno are terrible for uploading stuff from the show unfortunately, but there was a video floating around Twitter a few weeks back! I hope she releases it like Vahe, Stephanie and Tamar did, it would be a first to have a Welsh version of an ESC song 🙂
Stephanie is so underrated. Being an Asian as her, I really kinda like her from the start, though as equivalent as Tamar. Dibs to her as my waifu.
I loved Tamar’s version. Tamar can take any song and make it her own.
I love this song and their performance in Vienna. Should have made the top 10 or even top 5. Vahe is not only doing Armenians proud, but us Africans as well. Whoop whoop!!
Armenia unfortunately holds the #1 negative record on Vienna’s Vision of finishing last by the most number of countries…12 countries from the 39 ranked the armenian song last one..
I adored both these songs personally..
I even had both Armenia’s & Hungary’s songs in my top10 overall.. <3
Stefanie is such sweet & lovely girl…She is very pretty <3
Vahe is adorable & cool…Handsome hottie babe <3
All of the Geneaology were lovely & likable.. <3
Both of these covers were descent ones…Good job..
Stephanie all the way
Igna should do a version, and Mary Jane. They made the original version. A soulful bluesy one and an operatic version would be class.
Tamar is still the only one who can sing and make this horrible song remotely tolerable.
When they all sing it sounds the best.
stephanie’s version kinda dilute the message of the song and vahe’s enunciation needs improvement.
waiting for essai’s version.
Tamar’s is definitely still the best.
