As the days are drawing ever nearer to Eurovision season, we are slowly finding out more about what we can expect from this year’s competition. Germany’s internal selection may be going up in black smoke, but Montenegro is burning strong with its choice of Petar, Marko and Luka – otherwise known as Highway.
We already know that the band finished in an impressive fourth place in the last series of X Factor Adria, but now we are finally able to hear the band’s own style in their first music release.
The song, “Sam” – translating to “Myself” – was written by band member Luka, produced by Croatian Srdan Sekulovic and mastered by American Stuart Martin. If this team is anything to go by, Montenegro could very well be preparing to pull a Russia on us and send a song written by half of Europe.
The song is undeniably Balkan rock. It’s reminiscent of Montenegro’s earlier entries in 2007 and 2008, both of which, I might mention, failed to qualify. That said, Petar’s deep Who-See-esque vocals fit perfectly with the rugged production, and Google Translate tells me that the lyrics are beautiful.
In the video, we follow a woman lost in southern Montenegro’s Lipa Cave, bumping into sinister circus performers and eventually putting on a soaking wet wedding dresses. Babes, even Krista had more class than that! Meanwhile, the band are obliviously playing their song, swapping between their Andrius Pojavis top-hats and Bob the Builder hard-hats. No jury corruption accusations are gonna knock Montenegro on the head this year!
Lyrics: Highway – “Sam”
Preda mnom je svijet,
A ja ne vidim ništa,
Gdje god da krenem,
Tu me cekaju oblaci i kiša
Sivilo je svuda a ja tražim srecu da pokrene mene
Na svakom uglu cekam te
Tudem pogledu ne dam te
Loš znak navede me
Njen glas zavede me
Dal je mrak ili dan ja ne znam više ni sam
Zavoli me onako kako znaš
Uzmi me pod svoje
U crno zavij me
Šetam lutam bez cilja tu sam
Pa nisam, ne znam ni s kim sam
Al jedno znam da s tobom sam SAM!
So what do y’all think of Montenegro’s sound for 2016? More synths? More accordions? More pink sequin hot-pants? Let us know in the comments below!
They sound like a really bad Echo & the Bunnymen cover band… what a horrible singer.
Be last plase for 10-15 points. ITS VERY BAD
They have a great style and I like their overall sound. Not the most impressive vocals so I’m not sure how they’ll do in Stockholm, we’ll have to wait for their actual song…
I like their style a lot…. it’s different.
It’s the vocals that are the let down. They need a very specific kind of song to make it all work but tbh I’m not getting my hopes up.
They are favorites to not qualify to final.
