Yesterday the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — travelled to Albania and visited the southern shore of the picturesque Lake Ohrid. While sitting at a lakeside cafe, we discussed Eneda Tarifa and her song “Fairytale”. Did we live happily ever after? Read on to find out!
Eneda Tarifa with “Fairytale”
“Fairytale” reviews
Bogdan: Most viewers will be unaware that “Fairytale” had an Albanian past as “Përrallë”. Judging the entry purely for what it is now, the drama of the lyrics is compromised by the playful beats. What was and should have remained a sweeping power ballad is a mid-tempo song that is struggling to find its identity. The only thing that could rescue it is Eneda’s spectacular voice, and that thankfully hasn’t changed since FiK54.
Score: 6/10
Edd: Albania once again tried to polish a turd and once again ended up with poo on their hands. They’ve managed to transform a shouty, messy, unintelligible ballad to a creepy, sleazy, (still) unintelligible ballad – even after translating it into English. I feel really sorry for Eneda, because she has massive potential. The only hope Albania has is to call up an emergency producer and completely transform it – dance, ethno, reggae… ANYTHING but this! Because this is just a waste of participation.
Score: 0.5/10
Angus: We know Eneda can bring her A-game in a live performance, but the English version lacks all of that fire. “Fairytale” as a result is more of a meandering nightmare, with moments of brilliance squandered because of a lack of vocal commitment. Let’s hope on stage Albania can pull it back.
Score: 1/10
Cristian: Dear Albania, what have you done? Where is the epicness of “Përrallë”? I can’t believe someone really thought this was an improvement of the song she presented at FiK. The song lost its identity and now there is not even a real and distinctive chorus. I’m disappointed.
Score: 5/10
Deban: Eneda Tarifa’s “Fairytale” presents a cultural divide: I just don’t get it! It was rich in sound at Festival I Kenges, but its current version is languid despite sitting on a chilled dance vibe. The supporting imagery featuring Tarifa in a myriad of playful roles doesn’t translate tastefully. It may take a lifetime to understand much of what this entry means.
Score: 2.5/10
Rezo: This song brings nothing in my heart now. It misses naturalness. I prefer the original song. That song would stand out in the contest.
Score: 1/10
Luis: “Fairytale” is a case of a country going kamikaze against their own song. This revamp has been purposely done to murder “Përralle” and leave us with its tormented phantom. The amount of anticlimax moments in this song is alarming, as if many pages had been torn from the “tale of love” which Eneda sings about. Albania has clearly lost its way in the revamping process of their songs, and their drift is becoming worrisome.
Score: 2/10
William: Eneda is a beautiful woman with an equally stunning voice and her FiK entry had great potential. Sadly this train wreck of a revamp has turned the Fairytale into a nightmare. The lyrics are very ESL and the song beyond repetitive. Even so, the hook — and that’s why I love you oh oh — gets stuck in your head like the most stubborn of earworms. The video does little to save this. It opens with Eneda playing the part of a sexed-up Little Red Riding Hood — and one wearing a rug on her head — before she goes all Dumbledore in an observatory, which appears to be made of cardboard cut-outs spray painted gold. Girl, you can sing. I just wish you weren’t singing this.
Score: 1/10
Marek: I am so disappointed, like really upset and pissed off. Eneda showed up with song which was 8/10 but her voice was really good so it was 8.5. When she announced an English version, no one ever thought it would end up so bad that it’s now 1/10. But scores aren’t the only thing I want to say about this song. The title is “Fairytale” – well, kinda. The only thing that comes to my mind when I listen to this song is Batman. The lyrics are terrible. In the music video she looks like a hooker. At the end when she closes her dress, it looks like a vagina. I am so sorry, Eneda, but you ruined everything.
Score: 3.5/10
Robyn: The difference between “Përrallë” and “Fairytale” is the difference between a wicked queen and a fairytale princess. Eneda ain’t no sweet princess so the attempt to shoehorn her into that role feels jarringly wrong. As the musical Wicked showed us, fairytale villainesses can be sympathetic, complex characters — it would have been so much more compelling seeing Eneda fully embrace that side. The dark fire and drama that took Eneda to victory at FiK54 wasn’t perfect, but it worked so much better than the neutered “Fairytale”.
Score: 4/10
Mikhail: This new arrangement is horrible. At some point it just cuts the line, which has to go on. The song has simply lost all its magic. Especially the chorus — it lost everything. Some electronic beats do not open the soul of the music and leave it laying unfinished on the table. Now let me go and cry over the dramatic and magical “Përralle”, which would have been in my top 10.
Score: 5.5/10
Padraig: The transition from Albanian to English has hit “Fairytale” hard. The original may have been far from perfect, but at least it could never be called boring. Stripped of the lush orchestral backing, the track loses its cinematic feel and sense of drama. The new arrangement just plods and would be better suited for preschool TV. Even Eneda sounds weary. At FiK54 she absolutely belted it out, now she’s much more restrained. Hopefully the spark returns in Stockholm. Because at the moment this fairytale is more like a drawn out nightmare.
Score: 3.5/10

Pollaski…..For song to get 9 here it must have good hair, chiselled abs, strong jawline, tight pants, big package, electro beats, shouty vocals
I feel like I’m the only person who sees the improvement with this version. The original was one of these ballads that doesn’t really stick out, like Serbia’s this year. I much prefer this version, with the sleek jazzy tinge that ZAA left behind with the rest of their discography. So the lyrics aren’t the best, but that isn’t stopping Russia or Croatia.
I might say that her vocals are rather good, but the whole impression is poor – it’s generally artificially and falsely. Can anybody really believe she’s singing about love? What I see is she’s just masterly voicing many perfect notes. Can you believe that her circus vocals are about feelings in principle? All this is too unnatural, so not many people will vote for her.
I liked this song but in English version song is very weak. Eneda has a good vocal but she can`t show it.:(
2/10
This is one of those many instances where the remake is a complete failure to the original. The original version of this song was good, not great. But now that we have this, the original was a MASTERPIECE! What happened?! The power in the instrumental background is gone! I don’t really care that the language was changed, but why change that?!
This song has been destroyed with the lyric translation. It was a good one.
Just a thought: Maybe in 2017. Albania should try… not translating their song. See how it works. Anyway, last truly great Albanian entry was in 2008, which was in Albanian. Last year’s song was also okay, but TBH, they didn’t translate it, they came-up with a completely different song. Not a fan of the approach, but beats this.
I think that all the Team of Wiwibloggs are underating this entry…. This is a really good song, with a good singer… Just forget about “përrallë” and try to qualify it as a new song. as Bogdan did.
It would have been better if Albania had sent ‘Mermë që sot’ instead of ‘Përrale’, that song was very original and catchy though it had a lot of changes along the song. ‘Fairytale’ loses all the power the Albanian version had.
It just sounds sluggish and carelessly lazy in English. The reason most people come down on it like a ton of bricks is because it’s such a reckless revamp that it’s hard to understand how it was even given a pass. The dubious lyrics lacking much substance, Eneda’s accent, her distant and almost frozen look plus the video’s silly imagery settings, props and faux pas fashion sense are all adding to make this the laughing stock of this year’s entries alongside Serhat’s disco balls and crotch.
4.5/10
32nd/43
Have not heard the original version in Albanian but I think it is unfair to be harsh just because it was worse. I will judge the song as it is and I think it is a fair song. The lyrics make no sense for sure but that is just a relatively small part of the song.
I understand the lowest score so far. Unfortunately, Perralle’s translated version is the most lazy, generic, uninspired pile of nothing we have this year. Eneda seams like a good singer and I would love her to return with something better. This is possibly the blandest entry this year.
0.5/10, 42’nd out of my top 43.
Albania always come to the contest with some amazing vocalists and some beautiful song, and at the start of national selection season they always seem in it to win it, but then they go and ditch their beautiful language for an uninspiring English version and it just loses its soul completely. Eneda has a great voice and looks stunning and she deserves much better than this. No final for Albania this year I’m afraid. 2/10 for me 🙁 please stop with the English translations.
Sadly, they made the same mistake Hersi and her team did in 2014: (1) They went English; (2) they replaced the much more energetic music of “Përrallë” for something that was, for lack of a better term, more “pop-friendly”. What might have been a borderline qualifier is quite likely an all-but-certain non-qualifier. She sits at #41 on my first review.
Is it only me, or is Marek a little bit dirty-minded?
@Skandar….thanks!!
@Pollaski….yeah I agree with you in this….this year its not good…..every song (mostly) of the 2015 top 10….would be able to win this year…..
@esc2016
Yar. We cool, bro.
On a seperate note, it takes a LOT to make me hate a song that’s sung by a redhead. Eurovision 2016 has given me two (Albania, Moldova)
This is a terrible year.
@esc 2016 +1
@Pollaski
i describe this like this….
1.UNBELIVABLE SONG
2.BREATHTAKING VOICE
3.MORE THAN EXCELLENT LIVE VOCALS
also i dint mantion the disantadanges of the song which are…
1.the revamp is worse
2.the lyrics are not the best
3.the language dont fit with the song very much
….understand now?
If a song’s going to be called “Fairytale” shouldn’t it have … y’know, some mystic or whimsical quality to it? We get neither here, just a standard pseudo R&B dirge that is quite boring and rather repetitive. I don’t know what the original Albanian version sounds like, but holy cow it can’t be any worse than this. The only redeeming factor is Eneda’s dress in the preview video- ITS GOT HER FACE ON IT. So does the skirt! That’s like 1980s WWF material right there, and if Jimmy Hart runs onstage during the competition screaming into a megaphone, give this… Read more »
@Pollaski I think he/she missed bad lyrics, bad language. These factors are deteriorationg the result IMO.
Ahh the repetitive sarcastic comments with random names once again. This is what I like about here 🙂
@esc 2016
PERFECT SONG
GREAT VOICE
BEST LIVE VOCALS
6.5/10
……..just out of curiosity… how do you describe a song that gets a 9?
come on now wiwiblogs…..albania has a great song with a perfect voice and enede has the best live vocals!….and you gave her only 3.58???
6.5/10
Why is the highest for Albania a 7?! I literally would have given it a 10 it’s absolutely amazing!!
well this wee wee frog is a bunch of loosers, so is their opinions.
“Albania once again tried to polish a turd and once again ended up with poo on their hands.”
WOW WOW WOW. I feel like you guys are being way too harsh.
You made your dislike of the song very apparent in your first review, and Enada took note of it and sassed you up in an interview. Where is the professionalism, guys? Okay, the song is not amazing, but insulting a song in such a vulgar manner, presumably because of the singer’s (justified) attitude in an interview is just plain sad on your behalf.
Haha I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought at one point she had a fiery, inflamed vagina on her head in ther video.
This is a nothing song for me. I loved Elhaida so this one is a step down…
Better luck next year. Would love to see Dafina Zeqiri or Tuna!
@Racal
well don’t mind the wiwi juries, that’s my opinion
but i don’t like this version, the albanian version was better 🙁
2/10
Peralle was an amazing song looking back because at the time I thought it was just OK. This is now my least favourite, but that will probably change when I make my final top after the rehearsals due to her voice – not the song.
Ok, this is not a good song… But how is this lower than Romania?!
A simple FYI to Albania on their Eurovision strategy… You are lucky because you have a great deal of neighbor voting and diaspora voting! Take advantage of it and sing in your native language! And if you so chose to sing in English, DO NOT try to re-purpose a song written and compose in Albanian, which bears little to no resemblance to English.The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting new results! IT didn’t work in 2011, 2013, 2014 and barely worked in 2015. Sure as hell not gonna work in 2016…maybe fix… Read more »
EDD you read her to FILTH OMFGGGGGGGGG
Yes, Perralle was better than this but I still like the revamp, even if I’m one of the only ones.
well she should’ve kept it in her own language, instead of this revamp
i really don’t like this new version
Albanian version would’ve got a 7/10
this revamped version gets a 4/10
That throw of shade was glorious btw, she’s one fierce bitch lol
Now I understand why people say (rumour), that Edena doesn’t like Wiwibloggs. After reading these comments, if I were her, I wouldn’t like these guys either.
Well, my guess is that either Albania or Montenegro will be the least favourite entry of Wiwibloggs this year! I am still confused with the revamp. The original version was much better, now it has lost all the drama, the power and the interest it had! On the other hand, I don’t get the hate surrounding it! I still like it and I think that Eneda has an amazing voice! If I was a wiwiblogger, then my score would actually be dropped!
7/10
her voice is amazing, but the revamp destroyed this powerful song 🙁 It was constantly in my top 10 before the revamp 🙁 People give love to Eneda no discrimination towards the singers !
@john: what do you mean “complete destruction”? what’s the t? tell me everything.
So they are (mostly) giving low scores to this entry just because was changed in english?!
Anyway only her voice can save her cuz she have a powerful one 🙂
This is my favourite song of eurovision 2016! YES it was better in Albanian but this song is still a brilliant entry. 9.5/10 from UK:)
Even with a very disappointing revamp, it is still better than a lot of songs for me. Nonetheless, it is definitely far from epic as it once was.
Maybe the low score is a result of Eneda’s complete destruction of Wiwibloggs in one of her interviews.
Really doesn’t deserve last place so far, it’s not as great as Perralle, but it’s also not worse than the likes of Belarus and Ireland. It’ll surprise in Stockholm considering Eneda’s stunning vocals.
Except for one or two, everybody’s been so harsh and vicious here…not my favourite song either but come on guys! My respects to Eneda, great singer;-)
it deserves the score
I am hoping that in the live performance that she brings some of the intensity that came with Përrallë as the English song Fairytale is very tentative and seems restrained. The English lyrics are clumsy and are so simple that it is hard to take the song seriously. This song goes as far as Eneda’s voice wants to take it. It COULD qualify but if it sounds like the studio version, it will not.
4/10
I’m getting used to this, but it’s still very bad. The revamp was TRAGIC and destroyed a quite nice song that has great vocals, but I think it won’t be enough to save this song from bottom 3
