As part of the Common Linnets, she helped deliver the Netherlands its best result in almost 40 years. But based on comments made in a recent interview, Ilse DeLange is unlikely to be returning to the Eurovision stage anytime soon.
Ahead of the release of her new solo album, the country chanteuse caught up with RTL reporter Aran Bade. When asked about a possible comeback to the contest, she remained rather coy.
The “Calm After The Storm” hitmaker suggested that it’s better to send fresh faces, while at the same time refusing to rule anything out.
“Never say never but not soon (in the upcoming few years). Because it’s better to send people who don’t have the experience yet and do it for the first time.”
The second part of the answer could be interpreted as a dig at her ex-collaboration partner Waylon. The pair famously fell out following their Eurovision 2014 stint in Copenhagen. And of course, Waylon returned to the contest this year. However, he failed to replicate the Common Linnets’ second place success — finishing 18th in the grand final.
Bade then asks, “But you watched last time, right? Only you don’t want to say anything about it?”. DeLange agrees with him, adding nothing further.
You can watch the interview (in Dutch) HERE.
The interviewer’s comment refers to a chat show appearance Ilse made shortly after Lisbon wrapped up.
While a guest on Dutch TV Show Pauw, the show’s hosts pressed her for her opinion of “Outlaw in ‘Em” and Waylon’s performance. In trying to avoid the question she made her thoughts very clear….
“I did watch it,” she said. “But I’m not going to say what I think of it. I get that question a lot: what do you think of the act, what do you think of the placing.”
“If I say something about that now, then I will read my words everywhere tomorrow and I’m not up for that. So, I thought about it a lot, but I’ll keep that to my friends and family. But I do have an opinion about it.”
Ilse DeLange is currently deep in a promotional tour for the release of her first solo material since forming The Common Linnets in 2014. The single “OK” dropped in the spring, while a full album is due later in the summer.
Ilse DeLange is a shady lady, because she could say “whatever you think about Waylon…racist he is not”.
Waylon’s face just before announcing The Netherlands as the last qualifiers. That “oh boy” expression…
On the other hand, Ukraine withdrew from Junior Eurovision for the first time. 🙁 I didn’t expect Ukraine to do so.
Interesting article. At first glance the subject seems to be Ilse. But look a bit further and you see it is, again, about Wiwi’s crusade against Waylon.
True. What Waylon did to you, wiwi? Do you see racism everywhere, or is it that he doesn’t like Netta? You don’t like Netta either, so it can’t be that. Did Waylon said something bad about the Queen of Covers, Eleni Foureira, or is just that you think he’s racist?
Take a breath, stand up, stretch, go for a walk.
You’re crazy.

also you support racist crunking.
Translation: I can’t think of even one good thing to say about “Outlaw in ’Em”.
Miaow
Classy woman. Hopefully she will participate in Eurovision soon. Perhaps not as a singer, but as a songwriter.
She’s smart and ellegant.
Outlaw In Em was my bathroom break this year
at least she has the decency to be polite unlike some other big headed esc acts 😛
Oh very coy and very much playing along with the media game. Don’t confirm or deny anything, be very positive, smile etc. She is a smart one and not getting caught out. Personally I would love her to come back to Eurovision as she has a gorgeous voice, would bring something a bit different and is absolutely beautiful. Her lovely voice was my favourite thing about ‘Calm After The Storm’.
She is smart…
