Portugal doesn’t have the most stellar record at Junior Eurovision, but as we know, a victory can come from anywhere. Hoping to achieve that for the Iberian nation is Joana Almeida with “Vem Comigo (Come With Me)“.

Portugal in Junior Eurovision 2019: Joana Almeida “Vem Comigo (Come With Me)”
The talented ten-year-old was internally selected by RTP after winning the popular child singing contest Gala Internacional dos Pequenos Cantores da Figueira da Foz.
Joana is passionate about singing, telling JuniorEurovision.tv that, “I wish to achieve a good score for Portugal, I wish to conquer the audience, to have fun on that huge stage and to be happy doing what I love the most: to sing!”
What do the “Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” lyrics mean?
Written by João Pedro Coimbra, a successful musician and frontman of the band Mesa,”Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” is an upbeat song with a fun, child-like energy. It fits well with Joana’s voice and personality. The Portuguese rep says: “It speaks of nature and the environment and how, all together, we can help saving the planet, our home”.
The song begins in Portuguese, with a strong environmentalist message: “They say I am young and know nothing about life, but if the Earth suffers we suffer at the same time, it’s our home and of everything that exists, and I love all the things she gives me”. The verse continues with a call to action for others to join her cause “It’s so easy to understand that nature is our mother, and like us, she is free, she belongs to no one, come with me, I can’t make it alone”.
A sense of urgency builds as the song progresses: “I am young but I know what to do, time is running out to save the Earth, come make a difference, we can make it work, let’s make it happen now”. It’s a very powerful and timely theme and should resonate well with the show’s young audience.
By the end, the intensity reaches a high: “I hear that everything is normal, that global warming is a false alarm, but I am afraid, I leave in a sea of green, that can be destroyed by the fire and the drought”. Her pleas become more pressing “It’s time to wake up, we can go further, and all together defend our home, we are going to make it, forever united, I need you, I need you now”.
But “Vem Comigo” is a song of light and shade. It concludes with a hopeful note. Through cooperation and friendship, the looming climate crisis can be averted: “Let’s come together and be friends forever and let’s make it happen now.”
“Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” is just one of several entries with a strong social message in this year’s Junior Eurovision. Nonetheless, its message is extremely relevant and the themes of inclusivity and working together ensure that it never comes across as too preachy.

The production in this has been a major complain amongst jesc fans but I like it
Unfortunately, it’s a very strong year so even though I really like it, It might be my 14th/15th place as of right now
There’s only one song I can’t stand this year and it’s Belarus’s, and 3 songs which I think are kinda “Meh”, but pretty much like/love everything else.
Sounds promising 🙂 It night even lead to Portugal’s best result, but it all depends on the staging 😉 #onlytimewilltell

Guys some of these comments are so toxic. This is junior Eurovision and with such young artists competing you can’t just come out and say that this is horrible or it will come last. Anyway I feel that with the correct staging this will do well in Gliwice.
Oh, sure, cause they are “kids” (teens) it is much better tell them lies. Welcome to the real world, she is in a competition and her song is not good. So it is like if you go to a shcool test and you don’t study. Results are coming darling.
Well if you think the songs at horrible then I suggest you don’t watch junior Eurovision at all. Also, I am a child who has dreams of one day competing at Eurovision. When someone says something bad about a song I have worked hard on, I can feel quite upset because all that hard work has gone to waste. Imagine Joana Almeida (the singer of the Portuguese song) came down here and saw some of these comments. She is representing her country on the world stage. The assertiveness is admirable.
Assertiveness is irrelevant when the song is poor! Her song will end up last. Resistance is futile.
This entry is really growing on me. It is still presently outside my personal top 10 songs for this edition, but I think it might be Portugal’s best JESC entry to date, and subsequently I do hope they achieve their best placing this year. Joana is too darn precious. How cute is it when she says “Hearth” for “Earth”? Oh, and thanks for these lyrics Wiwibloggs… I was singing “and the city friends, we can make it work”, instead of “anda sê diferente, we can make it work”.
