SamAberdeen wants to be Eurovision 2023 host city and so does Liverpool. Leaders in Belfast have expressed interest — and so too have officials in nearby Londonderry. But what are the key requirements to host and does the government help decide?
Well the BBC, which is no doubt receiving a lot of messages from officials around the country, have now published a Frequently Asked Questions document that briefly summarises the process. We’re pasting it below.
Eurovision 2023 host city FAQ
How do you apply to be a Host City?
Any local authority interested in becoming a Host City can email [email protected]
Does it cost to enter a bid?
There is no charge to enter a bid. It is up to Cities whether they incur costs to support their bid.
Who decides who will be the Host City?
The selection of the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be determined by the BBC and the EBU.
How does the process work?
It is a two-stage process and to be considered, any potential candidates must meet a set of minimum standards that demonstrate they have the capacity, capability and experience to host an event of this scale and complexity.
What are the key requirements?
The final decision on selecting the Host City will be based on a city or region’s capacity and capability in meeting the BBC’s and the EBU’s requirements, as well as availability of resources and general experience in hosting a large and complex event such as the Eurovision Song Contest.
For example, last year the EBU’s Host City criteria was based on providing a venue able to accommodate at least 10,000 spectators (as well as a press centre), that should be within easy reach of an international airport and with ample hotel accommodation.
Will there be different rounds?
There will be two rounds. Once we have received applications, we will shortlist cities based on their ability to meet the requirements and their responses around capability and experience.
Will the government have a say on who hosts it?
We may consult with the UK government but the decision on who will be the Host City will be determined by the BBC and the EBU.
When will you announce the Host City?
We expect the process to be complete in Autumn and we will announce the successful Host City then.
Tbh, everything from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland I want to host
Glasgow or Manchester are both good options. I’d be very disappointed and let down if a different city is picked.
GLASGOW!!!
MANCHESTER.
Liverpool please??? anyone who’s been there knows the vibes are perfect for any sort of event. their arena is also super cool and really imposing, it would make a great opening shot
What about holding it at Glastonbury?
Must be between London, Glasgow or Manchester!
I don’t think it will be Birmingham this time, because they hosted it last time UK was the host..
I root for Liverpool, but I think it will be Manchester.
Glasgow 2023!!! ???????????????????????????
It annoyed me how long it took Italy to decide on a host city last year. Hearing that their intent is to select it within the upcoming autumn is a slight relief. Hope it won’t take overly long for other crucial info on ESC 2023 to be revealed in the future
Italy also made a host city decision in autumn 😀
October 8th. Also autumn but still late
obviously we all crave any Eurovision news in the lead up, however I wouldn’t want to add pressure on the bbc to pick in a rush either for the fans benefit. Although at this point, we know it’s a toss up between Manchester and Glasgow and I’d be happy with either.
The selection of the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be determined by the BBC and the EBU.
No say from Ukraine.
because it’s not in the Ukrainian territory. Ukraine will be involved when the creative discussion starts.
The hosting country are better equipped to have the final word on the host city as they have the local knowledge. Tbh I’m sure the Ukraine broadcaster will probably be invited to participate in the selection. I very much doubt they’re being left to sit on the sidelines in all of this. The British are very respectful in that regards and will be conscious of Ukraine in all their decision making.
I really hope Nottingham puts a bid in
