It’s New Year’s Eve 2024, and that means only one thing for Eurovision fans — spending the entire day listening to the Eurovision Top 250 Countdown, known as ESC250.
The yearly poll sees fans pick their favourite 250 entries from the entire Eurovision back catalogue (that’s almost 70 year’s worth of songs).
Käärijä emerged victorious last year, with voters selecting his 2023 entry “Cha Cha Cha” as the number one Eurovision song of all time. Could any of the 2024 acts challenge him? Or perhaps previous winners Chanel or Loreen could bounce back up to the top.
Voting for ESC250 2024 — organised once again by Songfestival.be — took place earlier in the month, with Eurovision fans submitting points for their top 10 favourite songs from the contest’s history.
The results of the poll are being revealed throughout New Year’s Eve, 31 December, on EFR12 Radio. You can listen live from 11:00 CET, with the #1 song expected around 23:50 CET.
Who do you think will top the ESC250 2024 results? What was your personal ranking? Share your comments below as you listen throughout the day.

the only good thing out of this is aija dropping only 2 places
There are only 3 songs in the top 25 I would have even shortlisted.
Which ones?
Fai Rumore, Fairytale & Tout l’univers – but I don’t think they would have all made my Top 10.
If you’re not satisfied with how the ESC 250 list goes, make your own list! It would be interesting to see different people have different songs on their list.
What would be your own personal number one, Woolf?
At the moment, I guess Arcade 2019–Netherlands 2019 would be my overall number one pick if I were to do a list like this, but I haven’t really given it much thought myself. I don’t really take the ESC 250 that seriously, and I just get tired of people complaining and belly aching about petty things, like how there’s too many newer songs from the last 10 to 15 years as opposed to the nearly 70 year history. I just think people need to channel their negativity or disappointment into constructing more positive stuff if they don’t like something.
Nice choice.
I am somewhat disgruntled by the underappreciation of 20th Century classics, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. Their loss!
Don’t let negative comments get you down, I don’t think anybody here takes it THAT seriously.
I’ve already commented about recency bias in the countdown, but it does seem to be getting worse. Someone posted the full 2008 countdown last night, and only three songs from that year’s contest made the top 25. The oldest song in this year’s top 10 came from 2021.
I’m not sure what can be done, and I know it’s only a bit of fun on NYE, but it now seems less “Greatest 250 ESC songs of all time” and more “Greatest 250 ESC songs since 2010”
Check again please oldest song in this years top10 is from 2012 and its a winner
Maybe divide the list by century?
That could be a way to deal with it, have three lists. Top ESC 250 of the 20th century songs, Top ESC 250 of the 21st century songs and then do a combined ESC 250 by taking the top 125 songs of each list and then merging them together. See, problem solving.
I think it would be good to ban songs from the current year. Whilst you’d still have recency bias, I think it would have a bit of an impact
Yep, one of my first thoughts would be to change the eligibility rules so that a song can’t be included on the countdown until the year AFTER it appears at the contest. That would mean the songs of 2025 couldn’t appear until at least NYE 2026.
Another idea would be to make people vote for at least one song from each decade. If you combine the 50s and 60s, that would take up seven places on each person’s top 10, and they are then allowed three “free” votes of songs from any decade.
There’s always gonna be a bias with this vote because a LOT of people including myself didn’t know where OR how to vote for this thing.
How Hurricane got 18th, where it should of been 233 places lower.
Mass voting similar to the song’s result last year.
Every other entry from that country dropped in the countdown happily. A whopping 40 place drop for their 2023 song.
Tbh I’m already happy it’s not higher.
Yea, I started getting a little concerned when it wasn’t turning up in the countdown. Huge relief when I heard it.
To clarify, the relief was that it didn’t reach any higher than 18th.
Day 1 of 2025 and day 453 of hxll for the remaining 100 hostages.
#LetThemGoNow
Are you talking about the thousands of innocent Palestinians including children imprisoned in Israeli jails under administrative detention?
It’s not a contest. Both scenarios are heinous.
In another post you would probably comment “keep politics out of this.”
The horrible things these hostages go through are not “politics”. I’m a guest here so I’m not going go into details about what the hostages would be going through, or went through – those who are no longer with us.
We need to have empathy and humanity for ALL innocent victims everywhere!
Are you including the 10,000 Palestinians still in Israeli prisons who are “blindfolded with their hands and feet tied and later being beaten by Israeli forces, who withheld food, water, and medical supplies” per an article from the Independent? Wait. I forgot. They’re savages, not people. Give me a break.
109 of the 117 hostages back in Israel were restored through the weeklong ceasefire. The IDF has only rescued 8 (and killed at least 3). The deaths of 45,000 Palestinians do not equal the lives of 8 hostages. The numbers show a ceasefire is more conducive to restoring the hostages. If Israel really cared about the hostages, they’d work on a ceasefire. But instead, they just approved a $150M program to “improve public opinion.” Eden’s in the IDF now, she’ll realize one day that her government doesn’t really care about the hostages she sang about.
Why does the USA keep supplying weapons to Netanyahu?
Day 453 of israels g3n0cide in palestine. Up to 100.000 palestinians have lost their lives its estimated
If Barbara Dex award got changed into something positive, this remains as a silly top list to devide people year to year. Not a fan.
At least there was only one countdown this year – in 2023, there were two rival 250 countdowns, when the last thing the fandom needed was more division and “real winner” discourse.
A lot of Swedish entries going up up up, because Swedes decided to massvote their own entries, looks like last two years really got to them. This is as true as Israel’s ESC result in 2024.
Last year all Finland’s entries also did a big jump in the list. So did Spain’s entries in 2022 when Spaniards mass voted Chanel on top. So every nation favours their own countries’ entries when voting.
There’s jumps, then there’s JUMPS. Finnish entries in ESC250 2023: 28. (45) Blind Channel – “Dark Side” (Finland, 2021) 37. (51) Lordi – “Hard Rock Hallelujah” (Finland, 2006) 138. (144) Softengine – “Something Better” (Finland, 2014) 201. (242) Norma John – “Blackbird” (Finland, 2017) 213. (205) The Rasmus – “Jezebel” (Finland, 2022) 242. (243) Saara Aalto – “Monsters” (Finland, 2018) Swedish entries in ESC250 2024: 1. Sweden 2012 – “Euphoria” – Loreen (+2) 2. Sweden 2023 – “Tattoo” – Loreen (=) 8. Sweden 2022 – “Hold Me Closer” – Cornelia Jakobs (-3) 22. Sweden 2014 – “Undo” – Sanna Nielsen… Read more »
It still doesn’t mean that some nations vote for their entries more. You must take their population into consideration too. Sweden has 2x more citizens than Finland. So it makes sense that Swedish entries made a bigger jump.
So it isn’t that Swedes vote for themselves, but the population is to be in consideration? Which one is it?
There is voting, then there’s spam voting in masses, latter making everything appear more popular than it actually is.
Neither. Hardcore OGAE types have q soft spot for Melodifestivalen, going back decades. They’re not Swedish. This year’s results maybe suggest voting levels from outside this circle were down.
Don’t blame the innocent citizens of Sverige! Trust me, that’s preposterous.
Horehronie (+100) ?
Great to see Justyna from Poland back in the chart at 141. Hopefully we will see her for her 30th ESC anniversary in the Polish final and hopefully at Eurovision this year. My favourite track from her new album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qT64ak2MqxI
GAJA would be such a great choice for Poland in 2025.
unpopular opinion but i actually prefer Tattoo to Euphoria
I think Loren said something similar too!
*Loreen LOL
it would not suprise me considering Tattoo charted higher in the UK
I also like Tattoo more
nice
The undisputed Queen of Eurovision.
It’s fascinating how Croatia 2011 – “Celebrate” – Daria keeps coming in Top 100 every year and I remember how much everyone hated it. On too of that, nobody ever talks about that song but somehow it’s always on this list! I like the song though z
that song was terrible, as a croat
I think at this point, it’s now just an in-joke from fans that “Celebrate” makes the top 250. It’s like a tradition, and on New Year’s Eve, where’s the harm in a song with that title making the countdown? It’s never going to win, so don’t worry and just enjoy the tradition.
(and I say this as someone who dislikes the song.)
APD and Nocturne so low is sad. Song quality all over the place.
The “avenge” vote of last year has died away, it seems. Loreen back on top, where she belongs.
Happy New Year, folks
Or perhaps Loreen’s “avengers” were in force this year? Happy New Year 🙂
Things going back to normal again ?. I believe that with the recency bias aside, Euphoria surely is one of the most iconic winner ever at ESC.
Well Loreen getting both top 2 so at least this year I can listen to my own playlist for the final minutes left in 2024, have a good year and hopefully to a better 2025 year y’all!
And there we have it – a Loreen 1-2.
I did get the impression that the fan fever over Käärijä had faded somewhat during 2024.
Number three is still very high.
It’s more so Joost and BL mania right now and that split the vote!
And then there were three! The top three will have two entries from Loreen and one from Käärijä. But in which order?
Joost finishing this high really speaks volumes of the injustice of this year’s contest. Thankfully the community is much more than the EBU.
Rim Tim Tagi Dim in at number six. Many thought this a likely winner, so six is an underperformance.
Europapa at five, another favourite not making the top.
So…Cha Cha Cha holds on or Loreen returns to the top. Spanish fans don’t seem to have turned out for the votes this year.
Well I think some people thought it wouldnt even come top ten, so i’m relieved. It will probably go up over time.
So as I predicted Joost is going to be above Nemo and Baby Lasagna <3 So glad Marina Satti is in the top 10 as well, she was my 12 points in this year + Spotify Wrapped <3
Relieved that a certain song did not make the top spot.
The Foreign Ministry of that country just approved the 20-fold (!) budget amount for propaganda on social media etc. next year.
Thankfully I was sure it wasn’t going to. They couldn’t even win the ESC televote despite all the coordinated effort.
Yes, I think it was unlikely, all other entries from that country have dropped. Their 2023 song dropped 40 places, so it seemed there was no organised vote to push their 2024 entry to no 1.
Waterloo at 46! Scandalous!
Ah, Marco. This is such a slow- burning gem for me, still getting better and better.
Really feel that Wiwi have missed a trick here by now live-blogging the countdown. I don’t use social media so I’ve nowhere to give my opinions or discuss chart positions with others.
They usually do, but times have been hard lately!
Estonia 2024 playing now, not sure what number we are at currently. Still too high.
I’m dipping in and out, but we’re inside the top 50. It’ll be more predictable from here, except for where will the class of 2024 appear.
Flowed by Lordi, and now Marco Mengoni 2023… I still don’t know what number we’re at. Don’t they tell us?
It’s a question of resources. I was live tweeting while on a ship for most of the evening, but it’s hard to update the website on a phone 🙂
Wow, surprised to see Verka have a sizeable drop, down 20 places.
Verka should perform in Basel, at the 69th contest…
A producer with a dirty mind could get good comedy from that….
Omg, it’s the 69th contest, I can hear the hosts’ double entendres already…
Die together gives me still goosebumps
wow, dafür gibt es ne -1 danke
I’ve heard the United Kingdom are going with Bollywood . Gone on the uk
Heard from where?
I have not heard, but would not be surprised by that tactic
You know how I sometimes hear Eurovision songs play over the intercom at a supermarket in America? Well today, I just heard a song from Melfest 2021, in the middle by the mamas.
One Mama is American!
I’m actually still amazed about Käärijä’s success? Has to be a lot of because his charisma? The music isn’t my style, except new Autiomaa, more melodic radio-pop.
What will the highest charting 20th century song be this time?
Wild Dances deserved the top 100. 20 years later and I still get goosebumps. Such a great ethnopop song.
Can someone wtitr how the countdown is going on?…
I mean write*
“Loop” finishing 25 places above “Eres tu.”
Never let anyone tell you recency bias isn’t a thing.
It’s normal we’re humans, the “bias” you mention is just subjectivity, something closer in terms of timeline to us is obviously going to be more remembered than something away. No one can be objective, more people related more this year when voting for Loop than Eres tu that’s all, there’s nothing bad or good about it, we should just enjoy all those songs. I’m enjoying the mix of old classics, recent entries and just all around good songs.
Or just plain ignorance.
Which is okay, I guess, we all have to start somewhere!
No one has to learn by heart every single song that appears on Eurovision. Truly people are voting for whatever reasons, a particular song that might not mean a lot to others, that did low in Eurovision, could be someone’s sweet 16th birthday song, etc. An artist that is now their favorite artist, or even just a sweet memory from this summer for instance for those most recent songs.
Viva la diva and vivan the lionesses!
Good to see Dansevise, the best winner in the first 10 years of the contest, climb 25 places. Always good to see some love for entries from the black-and-white era.
My prognostic for no 1 will be Europapa with Joost followed by Cha cha cha and Kaarija (which would be so nice due to them being friends). If he had been allowed to participate in the final, I believe he would have been the no 1 from televotes point. Now I just fear the same kind of interference for a certain song that actually finished 2nd in the final televote but we shall see.
Both entries that have appeared in the countdown from that country you mention have dropped from last year (not massively, admittedly), so I don’t think there’s been an organised push for songs from that country to chart high, unless they’ve organised it that they all get behind their 2024 entry to push it to the top.
I don’t know why you think that song and staging would have won the televote. Even some of the biggest fans for Europapa had stated their disappointment with the semi-final performance, which promised much but delivered little,.The disqualification made most people forget that sentiment, but I didn’t.
I am thinking this because of the audience during the semi-final itself, the amount of people who knew Dutch reminded me of the same love Kaarija received last year. It’s a question we would never know, unfortunately. (Also speaking from my POV I don’t care much about the staging, if it’s good it’s a nice addition but a good song will do well no matter the staging I believe. At least I would have voted for it no matter the staging.)
Fair enough but I was in the audience when Kaarija performed last year. I heard his shows at the Euro-village. I watched his national final performance 93 times on YouTube. Europapa was no Cha Cha Cha.
Europapa would not have won the televote, absolutely not. But it would have taken votes away from Croatia, enough to ensure that you-know-who would have won the televote.
So I just found out subwoolfer give the wolf a banana was 200 and they never played it disappointed if your to do a countdown of the 250 play all of them honestly
I hate that song, but your point is accurate – no point doing it if they don’t play them all.
Have I missed something or have they jumped from no 201 “What Colo(u)r is Your Life?” to no 199 “L’oiseau et l’enfant”?
Seems like yeah. #200 is Subwoolfer.
My no 1 is ISRAEL 2019 “HOME”.
Chag sameach and “hug sameach” to the most wonderful mosaic of people that keep hope and light alive!
i voted for Home back in 2019
Do you like Israel’s 2009 song? A classic.
I must admit, this early part of the countdown is my favourite. Once you get to the top 30, you can probably predict what’s going to be there, but in the early stages, you can never be sure what’s going to be there.
Wow, people are still voting for “A Million Voice”, a song that was in pretty poor taste at the time, but now is even worse, considering the singer is one of P*tin’s biggest fans.
Some people really are trash.
And followed immediately by “Shady lady”, a P*utin’s lovers double-header.
Both songs are nice though. Let’s be fair.
My top 10 pronostic in random order:
Loreen, Tattoo and Euphoria,
Kaarija Cha Cha Cha,
Baby Lasagna Rim Tim DmTagi Dim
Joost Europapa
Chanel Slomo
Barbara Pravi Voilà
Maneskin Zitti i buoni
Diodato Fai Rumore
Go-A Shum.
My pronostic on the winner, 3 possible winners:
Kaarija, Loreen, Joost.
Answer tonight.
Maybe I should have included the last winner in the top 10 in fact…let’s put Nemo instead of Diodato in the top 10, like that 9 countries are present in the top 10.
Ok let’s check:
8 out of 10, not bad.
Sad for Barbara, she deserved that top 10 again…
Almost 70 years of history and 2012 is the oldest song in the top 10? I think this poll may be a little bit biased towards the latest editions. ?
It must be that music in ESC is getting better and better 🙂 🙂 🙂
Recency bias is an issue with a lot of fans, many of whom don’t release the contest existed before 2012 and has an incredible back catalogue of songs.
But then this is what the EBU wants, younger fans. People like me who can hum Slovakia 1998 and Ireland 1977 don’t matter so much.
Being able to hum Slovakia 1998 is a sign of class! But yes, the EBU just wants Gen Z fans, and they’re assuming that millennials (the category I fall into), Gen X and Boomers who’ve been watching for years will just keep watching regardless, which is not the case at all. As I said above, there’s no point keeping the top 250 going if it’s really just the “top 250 of the 21st century.” Someone put on social media that the number of voters this year dropped significantly, perhaps that’s due to the move of the countdown away from ESC… Read more »
Am I right to think a Kaarija vs Baby Lasagna battle for numero uno?
