At Eurovision 2016 he survived thunder and lighting as he climbed a digital projection screen to reach his beloved.

And this holiday season the magic continues for Russia’s Sergey Lazarev as he stars in a televised adaptation of Cinderella.

On Tuesday the “Take It Off” hitmaker shared a teaser of the end-of-year musical, which airs on New Year’s Eve.

Playing the prince, we see him staring into the distance as he searches for his queen: “Oh, it’s her! I think I’m sleeping.”

Dressed in all white, with knee-high boots and silver spangle epaulettes, the trailer ends with Sergey on one knee and kissing the hand of his lady. We know all of you are now drawing a link to his Eurovision 2016 song — his love is definitely rising and the story is still unwinding!

Sergey for Eurovision 2019?

The television advert comes as speculation heats up over Sergey’s potential return to the Eurovision Song Contest. Not a day goes by that we don’t read a tweet or see a comment in a Facebook group with fans showing their thirst for the “You Are The Only One” star.

And Sergey added more fuel to the fire with this teaser, which sees him reprising the song in the musical! The song, which discusses his quest for the one, fits well with the plot of Cinderella.

After Cinderella flees from a magical ball to get home before midnight, she leaves her slipper on the palace grounds. With only a shoe to find the woman he fell in love with during the evening, the prince travels throughout the land trying to find the woman who can slip into the heel.

The trailer dramatises his search with the song, which won the televote in Stockholm. It’s kitsch, hilarious and a perfect fit.

Adding to the Eurovision speculation, the musical also stars Russia’s Eurovision maestro Philipp Kirkorov, who holds great sway over who and what Russia sends to ESC.

The New Year is a time of new beginnings. Could it be that Sergey will announce his run for Eurovision 2019 timed with the musical extravaganza? It would be a fairytale ending for Eurovision fans watching the show.

I’d be quite happy for him to return but he’s going to have to work seriously hard to beat “You’re the only one”

Potentially exciting news: Andrea, who represented Montenegro in 2009, might get chosen again. The queen needs to make up for that non-qualification!

Imagine Russia choosing Sergey, and Italy choosing Il Volo. Two fan favourites who won televoting but killed by the juries fighting it out for the elusive Eurovision glory. And if Sweden chooses Wiktoria, we will have an all-star cast.

Law of averages states that a completely different country would then swoop in and take it.

If he does come back he should go shirtless, black is great for hiding fat but it also hides muscle. All that gym work went to waste.

It would be cool if he came back, but only with a good modern entry. Im kinda bored with russia the last 5 years. Everything they send has this kind of cheesy “oh this is definitely a eurovision song” sound to it

I’m not very much for returning artists, especially ultra-successful ones who have a low chance at pulling a Dima Bilan. Russia has so many talents to showcase that a rehash wouldn’t be the best option.

I would so love for Sergey Lazarev to return , as he is both super handsome and has loads of great songs on his merit list, as well as comes across as a very likeable guy. I do though hope that the eventual song will be better and not as cheesy or as Eurovision by numbers as “You Are the Only One” were. Juries dont vote for songs like that, so he needs a song that mix the balance of catchy, personal and unique enough to stick out among the songs of 2019 and also past years songs (as it… Read more »
