She won Australia’s first national selection a few weeks ago and in the process beat out big fan favourites including Electric Fields and Sheppard.

And now, Kate Miller-Heidke has revealed that the staging of her song “Zero Gravity” will change completely.

On the big night, Kate performed her song about depression in a towering dress with blue projections and silver details, which put many in mind of the Statue of Liberty.

Behind her, there was an acrobat who swayed around in several directions, which sparked much discussion among Eurofans.

In a fresh interview on Australian TV show The Project, Kate did say she loved the national final staging of “Zero Gravity”, including the “Dementor” backing dancer:

I personally find it a beautiful sort of haunting weirdly vulnerable, sort of etherial and yet really human form of art. I love it.”

However, the opera singer revealed that it will be changed up and that she thinks it’s going to be better. Obviously she can’t disclose any details yet but she knows that she still has a lot work to do. She also didn’t address a question from a host about whether her acrobat will be with her in Tel Aviv. Watch this space.

She furthermore stated in the interview that she is self-conscious about participating at Eurovision as it is an amazing yet huge responsibility and Eurovision is a tough competition. Even Australia Decides was a very tough competition and she nailed it and we’re sure that she will improve even more until the semi finals in May!

Kate will perform “Zero Gravity” during the second-half of the first semi-final on May 14.

What do you think about changing Zero Gravity’s staging? Will Australia reach the top 10 again? Let us know your opinion in the comment section below!

I’m so happy they are dumping this staging. She deserves so much better and it was terribly distracting from the beautiful Heidi.
I would like to see a floating-in-space theme. I also want to see a bigger climax in the song at the end.

sorry don’t like any of the songs entered so far but have a little less like for this over anything else entered at the moment . I find all the entries so far the same as last year s entries they are the same songs only sung by different people the reason I like this a little more is that it is not the same as last years bunch .God knows what the hell it is but hopefully we may get something come through the later entries .

Hi Julian Geiser, in the interview she said: 4:22 “We are changing up the staging a bit” but you wrote in your post: ” the staging of her song “Zero Gravity” will change completely.” – Can you clarify this?

Suggestion: Comepletely change the whole Kate Miller Heidke act and have “Sheppard” with their amazing video projection on stage! Australia stuffed up AGAIN!

I actually have this idea for the performance where Everytime she does the opera part, she’s being lifted up by a belt, and when the part backing sings “nothing holding me down” a milky way exploded in her hips (similar to the opening of ‘God Is A Woman’ MV) and there are bunch of camera angles just showing that until the end, where the Galaxy gets suck back in a big bang forms behind her.

How about changing the whole act and just sending Electric Fields instead?… no?

Most of the Eurovision tops I’ve seen have Australia in or around the bottom five. Considering the effort they put into their NF, this is a disappointing response from the Eurofans. I’d like to think most of this was based on the horrible staging and that by fixing it, they could get a better televoting result. It’s not the best Australian song at Eurovision but it deserves to do better than their last two entries.

This is exactly my problem with our entry this year. Like, Kate-Miller Heidke sings quite well, and the song is weird enough to be interesting, but not weird enough to be off-putting. What sucks is that all this talent, as well as the empowering message of the song is masked over the over the top, circus like staging. She should lose the dress at least. It’s like Australia looked at Elina from Estonia last year and was like “yes, we would love an opera song, and an equally ridiculous dress’

They will probably replace the dementor with something equally silly like a glitter box or huge street lamps.

Let’s respect the votes, even if I preferred Sheppard. If the Australians have chosen this song (with this staging), they have their reasons. This the great year’s mistery: all favorites falls in national selections.
I suppose that winners all designated, it annoys people, they prefer the challengers.

We had less than 10 operatic songs since I can remember and everyone complains and makes comparisons to those other few not realizing they stand out exactly because they were so few of them… And then crave for “bangers” and “bops” because those are so fresh and needed. Smh so hard my neck is starting to hurt. I hope she only changes her dress from the waist down. The top part and the crown (Lady Liberty didn’t invent a spikey head piece) were gorgeous. I think a flowing bottom would make more sense to better depict the feeling of weightlessness.… Read more »

I am glad and relieved to read this news. The current staging is hideous and ruins what is actually a pretty good song and takes it from classy to novelty.

Australia is currently my number 3, on the condition that the staging is dropped for something more classy and less OTT.

As long as it’s possible, I would like if they keep the acrobat. It was a smart way to depict depression. Plus, it reminds me of Mad Max, so it’s very Australian by proxy. But yeah, that are many things they can improve. I don’t think she needs to be that elevated, you can put her and the acrobat in the same camera angle without restricting her moves. Also it would be a way to get rid of the dress. But even if they start from scracth, this is a song with a lot of possibilites in terms of staging.

I got the concept of the staging and loved it. But I think there are many people that don’t understand the symbolism – of the movements (synchronized..) etc… so maybe the change will help those who were overwhelmed and thought of it as weird and couldn’t figure it out. I would love she could just reduce the hight of this tissue holder kind of dress- and give her more opportunity to move with her whole body… we will see.

The clue to the choreography is in the title of the song, by the way. Most obvious opportunity for wires, ever.

Australia has become worse and worse every year. Their first entries even had some credibility in the ‘real’ world, whereas this year the entry tries so hard to fit the Eurovision formula it almost becomes a caricature.

Sorry, but that performance was a mess. To much relying on the pre recorded backing vocals and the hair reveal (wtf) while aimlesly prancing around the stage. I’m still in love with the studio version, just like Set Me Free, but live they were let just say underwhelming.

I swear I have already given this song three chances but each time I listen to it I just end up laughing. I know she says it’s about her personal struggles and everything, but musically it’s like a novelty act. This is not like Estonia 2018, Italy 2015 etc. This is more like Romania 2013 as someone already mentioned. It will definitely do well for the wtf factor and the vocals though.

Italy and Slovenia still have the best entries in my opinion.

Slovenia does not go anywhere for me. No climax. But it is still nice to listen to. I think Zero Gravity offers a more interesting and unique song with a powerful message.

I love her as a person, how charming she is!

However, I wholeheartedly hope she changes her staging into a more simple and elegant one, the song already has a lot going on and her stage was too excentric, too distractic, too tacky, it honestly felt like a gimmick rather than a beautiful and deep song (apparently is about post partum deppresion).

What are you basing this on? There are no firm arrangements. It is likely there would be a bidding process, assuming anyone at all would bite. Why would another broadcaster take on Australia’s burden? Especially if they are forced to “share” the event, being forced to have an Australian co-host or whatever.

Jack said nothing about the message of it, he was just critisizing the songs…. lack of elegance some would say.

The staging was bonkers and campy, if you are into it, good for you, but some of us do not particularly like it, and thats completely fine. 🙂
