Spain in Junior Eurovision 2019: Melani Garcia “Marte”

Between 2004 and 2006, Spain selected its candidates via the Eurojunior national selection format. However, for its long-overdue comeback, the Iberian nation opted to go internal. Melani was unveiled as the chosen act in July, although fans had to wait until 4 October to hear “Marte” in full.

Melani was born in the small town of La Eliana near Valencia in 2007. Her music career began at eight, when she participated in a local choir and her teacher taught her Mozart’s opera Due Pupille Amabili. Since then, Melani won season four of The Voice Kids in Spain, becoming a little operatic powerhouse!

She released her first single “Vivo Por Ella” in July 2018, a cover of the legendary Andrea Bocelli and Marta Sánchez duet which topped the Spanish charts in 1997. A second single “O Sole Mio” followed in January 2019.

What  do the “Marte” lyrics mean?

“Marte” is a beautiful heart-breaking ballad from the perspective of the ocean. It pulls at our heartstrings and anthropomorphises the sea, giving it feelings and emotions of pain and suffering.

The sea is defenceless and in need of help. Instead of clear blue waters, it’s full of plastic.

“Sorry, I have plastic in the waves
and secrets that I can’t tell.
I don’t have blue water anymore,
If you don’t want to see the world end like this,
you must defend the life in me.”

But it is not all doom and gloom. Melani offers light at the end of the tunnel. She reminds us that we can be the change. One united voice is so powerful that it can “reach Mars” and everything can be well again.

“Your voice today can fly, reach Mars
Take me to the path of light,
you can change it, reach Mars.
Take me to the light.
Everything can be as you want.”

However, Melani gives one final warning to us all — the sea and everything within it is offering humanity one final plea. Defend it because you don’t want the world to end.

“You don’t want to see the world end like this,
and you will defend the life in me.”

Powerful stuff!

“Marte” lyrics — Melani Garcia (Spain JESC 2019)

Written and composed by: Pablo Mora and Manu Chalud

Spanish text

Ahora
que-es cuando estamos a solas
soy aquello que llamasteis el mar
en el fondo del baúl

Perdona
tengo plástico en las olas
y secretos que no puedo contar
ya no tengo el agua azul

Si no quieres ver

Ahora
Cada resto que abandonas
Es un arma que bien puede quitar
Una vida a cara o cruz

Funciona
con las mentes que razonan
con la gente que algo quiere cambiar
con la gente como tú
que no quieres ver
que el mundo acabe así
y vas a defender
la vida que hay en mí

TU VOZ HOY PUEDE VOLAR
LLEGAR HASTA MARTE
LLEVARME A LA LUZ
LO PUEDES CAMBIAR
LLEGAR HASTA MARTE
LLEVARME A LA LUZ
TODO PUEDE SER
COMO QUIERAS TÚ

English translation

Now
That we are alone
I’m what you used to call the sea
Not taken into consideration today.

Excuse me
But there’s plastic in my waves
And secrets that I can’t confess
my waters are no longer blue

If you don’t wanna see
The world ending this way
You should stand up for every life within me

YOUR VOICE COULD FLY
MAKE IT TO MARS
TAKE ME TO THE LIGHT
YOU CAN CHANGE IT
MAKE IT TO MARS
TAKE ME TO THE LIGHT
EVERYTHING COULD BE
JUST THE WAY YOU WANT IT

Now
Each piece of waste you toss away
is a weapon that could take a life,
it’s a game of chance

It works
With the minds of those who reason
People that are willing to change
People like you
Who don’t wanna see
The world ending this way
And who will stand up for every life within me.

YOUR VOICE COULD FLY
MAKE IT TO MARS
TAKE ME TO THE LIGHT
YOU CAN CHANGE IT
MAKE IT TO MARS
TAKE ME TO THE LIGHT
EVERYTHING COULD BE
JUST THE WAY YOU WANT IT

There are seven songs that I consider to be in the same genre musically:

Spain
Italy
Poland
Portugal
Russia
Serbia
Wales

This genre is not my favorite type of music, so I may not have the best assessment of how these songs will do, but Serbia is the only one that I find to be really strong compared to this type of music generally.

Vocally, though, Spain is probably the biggest standout in this group.

It’s a daunting song to deliver but if she can get close, wow…do Spain have an excellent chance. As a studio version, it is probably my favourite song this year but I just think there’s so many parts where it could go wrong and there are safer songs if I were to (or able to) place a bet.

Yes better let kids sing about love, sadness or heart broken,so acurrate xD As far as I know she is not the only one singing about saving the planet this year, there are at least other 5,but most of them do it with dance music or with happiness. And at least for me,I prefer this way or the way of Serbia, with feelings. Not dancing and telling the world is a mess but dance and save it xD

I’m confident in her chances, but she’s got some big shoes to fill here. Spain won once and never finished below fourth place in its first JESC run.

I would be very surprised if this song finished lower than at least the top 5.

Pretty funny, that the song with the strongest and the most direct message about saving Earth is called “Mars”.
Nice lyrics, nice melody, extraordinary voice (wow!), overall Spain can take the top 10 finish for granted.
Quite exaggerated and dramatic in a few places, but I guess it’s a part of the genre’s convention.
Good luck Spain, it’s good to have you back!

What a comeback by Spain. It definitely is a contender for the win. It’s really so difficult choosing just 3-5 songs to vote for but, at present, my votes are going to Ireland, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, and Spain. But I also really love the songs from Poland, France, Armenia, Italy, Georgia, Wales, and Portugal. JESC has really come a long way over the years, in terms of the increasing number of fantastic songs. In some ways, for me, JESC is actually more enjoyable than ESC… I mean there are no drama-filled national finals, there are way less toxic online comments,… Read more »

For me JESC is more enjoyable than ESC most of all because
even though the contestants are judged from everyone they still are kids that do this because they love what they do and that always trespasses the screen. We can see it by the passion that those kids perform in every single musicvideo and live,
