We haven’t heard much from Cyprus this season, but now reports suggest that broadcaster CyBC is well underway with selecting their act for Rotterdam. OGAE Greece reports that CyBC has received 120 song submissions to be considered as its entry for Eurovision 2020.

The Greek chapter of the OGAE fan network reports that Cyprus will again internally select their act for Eurovision. And following the success and international interest in Cyprus’ two most recent Eurovision entries, CyBC is making the most of the fuego surrounding its 2020 selection.

OGAE Greece reports that CyBC has received around 120 song submissions. From those, the broadcaster has made a shortlist and will soon decide which song will be heard on stage at Rotterdam Ahoy arena.

And there’s also a hint of the sort of act Cyprus will select for 2020. Breaking from the recent trend of sending a female diva, OGAE Greece reports that this time, CyBC is looking to select a male artist. No one has been chosen yet, but the broadcaster will select an artist based on the eventual song choice and suggestions from the local music industry.

This method is a change from Cyprus’ system for Eurovision 2018 and 2019. In both those years. the broadcaster worked with the Greek Swedish producer Alex Papaconstantinou. He wrote a track for the broadcaster, who then selected a suitable female pop star to perform it.

This year, Alex P is off the roster, but it seems that CyBC will have no shortage of tracks from other composers to choose from.

Cyprus at Eurovision

After years of disappointing results, including non-qualifications and low grand final scores, Cyprus began its Eurovision renaissance in 2018.

The Albanian Greek popstress Eleni Foureira represented Cyprus with the dance-pop track “Fuego”. It fast became a fan favourite. Despite not being as popular amongst juries, “Fuego” placed second with the televote and went on to also place second overall, giving Cyprus its best ever Eurovision result.

Earlier this year, Cyprus again looked to Greece for pop diva, this time the Georgian Greek singer Tamta. She also performed an Alex P pop banger, “Replay”. The Tel Aviv entry was a bigger hit with juries than televoters and placed 13th overall.

What do you think? What sort of song should Cyprus send to Eurovision 2020? And who should represent Cyprus in Rotterdam? Tell us your ideas below!

Reportedly, they’re going the Greek diaspora route once again, this time with Germany: Voice of Germany competitor Sandro Nicolas is reportedly their guy.

I have a great Pop Song written by myself and a girl i know who recorded it but she lost interest in writing and recording.
Missed the deadline but winning the tournament is more important isnt it. The song goes back to the days of when the song was king instead of like the last 20 years where its all about the voice. Full of Melody is this song and its all in Greek.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Hovig is one of those submissions.
For some reason I think he will return for Cyprus again.

Nothing against another pop-banger just please not Fuego pt 3. Try something else and the results will be there.

Both Greece and Cyprus might dive into artists like Natasa Theodoridou or Peggy Zina; the latter can handle most styles of songs. Also, a new ESC-adventure for Elena Paparizou, maybe? I would LOVE to see her performing on the ESC stage again. She got more styles of music she can sing, than a girl has shoes in her closet. So, maybe that might be an option?

They made it sound like women from Cyprus could only perform with Fuego-ish songs so that they have to find some dude. It’s just funny. Have you picked Eleni because of her song/charisma/talent or because she’s a woman? If guys give you weaker songs then you can send women for 10 years straight and noone should complain

they should instead look for the best song n pair it with the most suitable singer, whether male or female. or… u kno…. not pair songs with anyone n just let a singer-songwriter do the thing ?

Traditional mixed with pop would be perfect imo. Elena Paparizou, Sertab Erener, Ruslana; they won with that sound, Eleni came in second with it.

I’m glad that they’re going back to trying different things rather than just repeating Fuego again.
