Portugal’s broadcaster RTP has already confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2026. But now a majority of acts competing in Festival da Canção, the country’s national selection, say they will refuse the ticket to Vienna.

For the 2026 edition, producers behind RTP’s national selection removed the obligation for the winning artist to compete at Eurovision. Instead, they tweaked the regulations to say the winner is “eligible” to participate.

In an open letter, seventeen artists, who are spread across eleven different acts, say they were “astonished” that Israel’s broadcaster will be allowed to compete in Vienna. You can read their full statement below. There are a total of sixteen acts competing in the festival.

Portugal: 17 artists from will refuse Eurovision if they win (OPEN LETTER)

“The Festival da Canção has been, since 1964, a place for sharing Portuguese music every year. It has undergone various formats, has featured both established names and emerging artists of the national music scene, keeps critics and fans engaged, but has never lost its public service mission toward song and toward the people who listen to it, and therefore toward the country itself. This is the principle that moves us. And, therefore, we believe that participating in the 2026 Festival da Canção is not only the opportunity that so many Portuguese artists wish for, but also the continuation of a cultural legacy that we intend to honor.

It has been the norm that the winner of the Festival da Canção represents RTP, and consequently Portugal, at the Eurovision Song Contest. We did so, with Salvador Sobral and Luísa Sobral, winners of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. And it was the country that won, far beyond RTP—the victory belonged to the people. Thus, the sense of belonging to a nation when participating in an international competition like Eurovision is undeniable.

Despite Russia being banned from participating in the 2022 edition of Eurovision for political reasons (the invasion of Ukraine), we were astonished to see that the same decision was not applied to Israel, which, according to the UN, is committing acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. We were equally perplexed to observe the results of the vote at the General Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU): 738 votes out of 1122 in favor of the new voting rules—that is, a majority satisfied with the changes and no democratic inquiry into Israel’s participation in Eurovision. In that majority was also RTP, a fact that we, as citizens, in addition to our role as artists, regret.

Therefore, we publicly declare, together, in a coordinated position among current songwriters and future performers, our refusal to participate in the 2026 Festival da Canção should we be selected as representatives of the winning song at next March’s competition. We understand that the country and the world are living through moments in which silence makes us complicit in a tragedy. Through words and through songs, we act within the possibilities that we have. We do not collude with the violation of Human Rights. And we stand firm with culture—with Portuguese culture.

Long live music. That is why we are here.”

And will any of the artists condemn the 2nd biggest terrorist attack in 25 years when 1200 Israeli people died on October 7th? ?

I dunno Jonny, maybe the strikes on civilians, hospitals, schools, the forced famine, the statements from Israeli leaders, and the IDF videos of their crimes probably had something to do with it.

I think every reasonable person has condemned the attack of October 7. But Israel’s response to it has truly been completely out of proportion. The regime in Israel is even more terroristic than what it claims to be fighting.

The EBU does not care about activists. And I don’t see why that should be a problem.

If you’re not happy then why enter! Withdraw your song and write to the U.N. Also withdraw from all other international events like the World Cup in 2026. Double standards once again. Remind me again who attacked who first in October 2023

Israel cannot manipulate World Cup, but it can and it does manipulate Eurovision. There is a difference why it makes sense to withdraw from Eurovision.

Instead of boooing and being stupidly rude could the live audience either leave the arena for the 3 minutes or just all have a black eye mask with something like” no manipulation thank you” written and earplugs provided? That’s what I would like to have the option to do.

If ooonly somebody very influencial called for a biiig general “3 min WiFi silence/disconnection” during the contest… A big fist dropping message telling : “YOU’RE FREE TO COME ALLRIGHT. OF COURSE.. AND WE’RE 200% MORE FREE TO NOT ENDURE YOUR PROPAGANDA AND GO TO PEE WITH ZERO DATA DOWNSTREAM DURING THOSE 3 MIN… AND KEEP OUR SANITY THANK YOU…”

Woaww.. That’s called having morals. How come @francetelevision still hasn’t withdrawn? I’m really not proud for France UK and Germany if apparently the deadline of withdrawal without penalty was yesterday… Really. Even I will end up not getting into Eurovision mood this year. That’s a first.. I mean… A huge first.

Anyone knows when they are publishing the final list of participating countries? Is Armenia in or out? What about Kazakhstan and Canada?

ABC

So not all the participants? So that would just mean that they’d go down the list until they get to one of the participants that will go to Eurovision.
Failing that, they’d probably internally select. As Festival de canco is its own competition in its own right.

Imagine having to ask the entry that came last to do Eurovision because everyone else refused. Or an entry that stayed in the semi.

How out of touch RTP is with the contestants of FdC accurately represents how out of touch the elites are with the public regarding the issue of Israel. This is not viable. And I hope that this situation repeats itself in other NFs as well.
My full support to those humane and brave enough to make such a decision and refuse a potentially career-making participation at ESC. Individuals making such decisions are much more admirable than broadcasters and truly make our hopes rise.

If I must say, this could turn into a situation as messy as the 2019 national contest in Ukraine, where the top 2 withdrew for rules violations (correct me if I’m wrong), and in the end Ukraine decided to withdraw entirely.

The result here, with so many potential withdrawals, could be the same, and Portugal as a whole could end up dropping out.

I don’t think Portugal will end up dropping out. From the beginning RTP predicted the situation they are in right now. And they have made it perfectly clear that they would be participating no matter what. They already said they would, the participation fee has been payed for, so there is no turning back anymore. Also, fans that want Portugal to participate would also be terribly disappointed if they suddenly dropped out. In the end, they’ll choose someone willing to participate in the contest and that’s it.

You’re very wrong. Only the winner of Vidbir 2019 was disqualiied, and UA:PCB withdrew as a Ukraine competing nation. I’ve always believed that they sabotaged themselves to not win the 2019 contest, as it is prett clear that Ukraine would’ve been in contention for the win.

Now, we just need the Italian entrants to follow Portugal’s example.

I am also announcing that if I’m picked for the first 11 for my national team in next year’s world cup, I will also refuse to participate.
