Mikhail Smirnov has won Russia’s national selection for Junior Eurovision 2015 with his song “Mechta” (Dream). Next stop? Sofia!

Russia’s national final was pre-recorded this afternoon and is being broadcast this evening. If you watched the show in Moscow today, you would have seen young Mikhail ooze class with his song, which is all about nature, the beauty of the world and — just maybe — sharing it with someone you love. As he says, “…where the wind breathes and changes its colour on the horizon, into the hands of the sun, you and me, into the hands of the sun forever!” You can read the (very rough Google) translation of the lyrics below.

Mikhail had to battle a series of strong female vocalists, many of whom rode the EDM trend with upbeat, danceable songs. That he stood out is a testament to his strong voice and charisma. We’re already up to four male singers at this year’s Junior Eurovision — that’s four times as many as last year!

Are you feeling the song? How does it compare to this year’s other contestants? Let us know what you think in the comments box below.

Mechta – Mikhail Smirnov (English lyrics)

This sky stele and I,
I climb up where the dream takes me,
and among the star fields,
I see the city lights,
she believes just the eyes,
and to the right heart to the shores,
So that I dreamed of, so that love,
this way I’ll find!

You take me higher,
where we will perform our duet,
Hurry to where the wind is breathing and the horizon changes color
on your hands to the sun, you and I,
on hand to light forever!

Take me to the clouds,
the White City with a touch of rain,
you show me the Dawn and draw my thoughts portrait,
Behind the wings of light,
dissects time on the water,
I’m going back next to it,
and freeze it at the window ..

You take me higher,
where we will perform our duet,
Hurry to where the wind is breathing and the horizon changes color ,
On hand to the sun, you and I,
at the hands of the sun forever!

You take me higher,
where we will perform our duet,
Hurry to where the wind is breathing and the horizon changes color
on your hands to the sun, you and I,
on the hand to the sun for all!

Thanks for the translation. Is this the actual English version of the song?
Whether it is or not, it almost sounds like a spiritual / religious epiphany…
I hope Russia sticks with Russian because it seems like many songs will capitalize on ‘dreams’, ‘wings’ and ‘Endless Sky’ this year…

“DREAM” To the height of skies the eye can’t see I am climbing up to reach my dream. And in the beauty and glory of fields I am making my way to my dream. It will take my heart where it belongs Even if the way is hard and long. And I have seen this dream in my sleep, And there’s someone who’s set my dream free. CHORUS: And so please take me to the blue skies And we will sing about the place, Where the wind plays with the sunlight, Touching my hair and my face. Into the arms… Read more »

@Graph – I gave it another go after reading your impression of it and I agree that there is more to this song that meets the eye at first. I also got that choir feeling effect with those staccato claps during the second chorus and the one following the bridge. The boy playing the double bass during the bridge is an asset to the song. While I still don’t like it when the lyrics aren’t reflecting what kids relate to at their early youth, both the composition and the simplicity of the clip make the song accessible and this could… Read more »

I don’t know. It won’t come last because it is Russia. His live performance reminds me of Russia 2008…

This is a great song. I was too impatient last night. I didn’t listen to all 18 songs in their entirety and this was one where I quit too early. But it’s now my favorite JESC song of the four announced so far. The verses seem to meander around for too long, but the chorus is amazing. Just when I thought it was turning into Bulgaria’s song last year, the melody went a totally different direction. It has a very unique sound – like a Christmas choir mixed with a pop ballad. It sounds mysterious and inspiring at the same… Read more »

The problem with the song is that it conjures up mental images that make you feel at a certain unease because young teens don’t express themselves like that and are usually not engaged in this kind of introspection, so I doubt this will have an across the board appeal. Russia being Russia will do relatively well no matter what.
