Nearly two months after being announced as the representatives of Georgia at Eurovision 2016Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz finally have revealed the five songs that will face the public vote, with the winner to be revealed at the national final on February 15.

Selected from over 100 entries, the five shortlisted songs are all in English. One of the songs, “We Agree”, was written by the band’s frontman Nika Kocharov.

Broadcaster GPB had put out a call for songs with “melodic song structure of alternative and indie rock with electronic beats, synths and/or samples, and club orientation of post-disco dance music”. While we’re not hearing a lot of the electronic sounds or indeed the “post-disco dance music”, the five songs are delivering strong indie rock sounds, with a particular Britpop influence.

Despite not being a popular style for Eurovision, we’re curious to see where the selected song takes the band. The band are curious too, as they’ve told us, “You must fit the whole essence in one song”.

wiwibloggs’ Tbilisi correspondent Rezo was on the scene as the collective debuted the five songs live on the TV show Komunikatori.

The public televote open on Thursday February 4 and will close on February 15. The same day, again on Komunikatori, the votes will be combined with that of an international jury to determine the winning song.

Although the band themselves don’t have the pressure of having to win the national final, the selected song can make or break their result in Stockholm. It comes down to the Georgian people to choose the best song, one that could bring home Georgia’s first top-five result.

Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz – shortlisted songs

“Midnight Gold”

“Pain In My Heart”

“Right of Wrong”

“Sugar and Milk”

“Weagree”

I like Midnight Gold and We Agree! Yes, is that Liam Gallagher playing the bass? LOL I love this band and their music is great. I hate to say this, but in the sea of pop cheesiness, I don’t think they will qualify for the final. But fingers crossed, I hope they will make it into the final. I hope the juries who are “music professionals” will give their high marks on them.

Oh wow, 20’s alternative in ESC? I’m greatfully shocked. However, apart from Weagree, the songs are pretty much average so…Weagree please. Also some people here i just can’t understand, if you never were into the genre, then don’t comment then. Weagree > Warrior. :*

Gays dont understand good music. Perfect songs, they will bring something different in Stockholm and we need it. Well done Georgia, you will be in final this year.

Is that Liam Gallagher on bass?

Anyway, out of these 5 I kind of like Sugar and Milk. Sort of an early 90s sound.

And WTF is up with the auto tune on these supposed ‘live’ videos? If you try to present yourself as an indie band, you shouldn’t care about that crap.

i am so tired of Pop songs, miss so much something new ! i hope one day Eurovision will not be only pop song contest!
i like the band, he actually has beautiful voice and songs are really nice. i wonder how they gonna be placed at Semi and hope in Final!
My fav is Midnight Gold, Weagree .. also Pain in my heart… also all 5 are good in their own way!

This wasn’t as much of a disaster as I thought it would be but it’s average at best. The guy has no vocal range in the songs whatsoever and when he’s not singing the song is just loud noise.

I think it’s safe to say that Georgia will not be in the final.

All of them sounds mostly the same to me, but if I had to pick one, it would be “Pain in my heart”. “Weagree” is not bad at all, but I think is too empty and slow. Honestly, I don’t see a qualifier here, we’ll see…

The least horrendous is the first one.

He has probably the least interesting voice I’ve ever heard. These songs are cheaply produced, have no structure at all and go nowhere. These are as basic as rock can get, and I really like rock, but this is just… I couldn’t even stand one minute of Right or Wrong or Sugar and Milk.

The songwriting is somewhat interesting, but the instrumentation is too laid back and dated. I think Right or Wrong is the best choice, although Weagree is not a bad one either. They’ve got some work to do between the time of the national final and Eurovision…

Well at least Georgia is kind enough to let other countries qualify instead of them this year 🙂

But seriously after Warrior doing well last year GPB had no reason to pick internally.

Bring back Sopho khalvashi (2007) Please!

I feel like putting Weagree on repeat while drinking a bottle of wine after breaking up with my imaginary significant other in the rain.

I’d have to say that “Midnight Gold” really seems to be the only one that might get them out of the semi. “Weagree” is nice, but seems more appropriate for an interval act than an actual entry. Aside from those two, the other songs sound fairly the same. But I’m always fine with countries stepping out of the pop comfort zone…I just wish more would do that.

Midnight Gold is my favorite here for sure, the style feels like Muse, my fav band. The next three all feel similar and as someone pointed out, very Oasis-like lol, almost 90s grunge. And then I also dislike Weagree for being boring. If you are going to do rock at Eurovision, you might as well go all out and do rock, not disguise it as yet another ballad!

They’ve got the indie rock, but from the 80s/90s. Oasis and the like come to mind. Just more of a cover band version than the real thing…

I’d have to go for either “Sugar and Milk” or “Pain in My Heart”. “Weagree” is so boring, 1 minute in and I’m already wondering why it isn’t over yet.

But at least it’s not more Scandipop…

I appreciate that none of these are typical Eurovision songs and in their own right I don’t mind them all.
Competition wise it’s safe to say Georgia won’t win but nonetheless
I would send either “Sugar and Milk” or “Midnight Gold”

Hate weagree, it’s the most boring repetitive rubbish for me. With a gun to my head I’ll take Midnight Gold, the way it picks up halfway through makes it kind of fun.

I can only tolerate Weagree though it’s a bit too boring. I guess I don’t like the others cause is not a genre I’m used to but kudos for Georgia trying something that’s not typical Eurovision and for being bold ( Azerbaijan could take some lessons from these guys…)

I’m back… aha. And my favorite is ‘We Agree’ followed by ‘Sugar and Milk’. The best part of ‘We Agree’ is the one minute where stuff actually happens near the end, but it has a great atmosphere to it. All 5 songs are a bit weird in their own way, and I can not see Georgia doing well this year, however whichever one of these is chosen, will most certainly stand out when I spend months listening to all 43 on loop… and for that I thank Georgia. What do my fellow Wiwibloggers think of these songs?

These songs are awful.. maybe I just don’t like the genre – but it’s guranteed that Georgia will not make the final this year! Georgia really stepped up in 2015 when they sent Nina, it certainly recovered the disasterous song of 2014. I feel like this year has replicated 2014, in terms of poor songs.

I’m actually pleasantly surprised. All the songs are original in their own way. I don’t think they can reach the final in stockholm though. Eurovision doesn’t have the best audience for this kind of songs. If it goes through to the final I’ll be impressed.

I think Weagree is the best just because it’s not the most dated rock song out of the bunch, and it has the nicest vibe to it. However, it’s boring too :’)
