In March, RTP, the national broadcaster for Portugal, hosted the Grand Final of Festival da Canção — its rebooted national selection for Eurovision. Salvador Sobral rose to the top and grabbed the ticket to represent the Iberian nation in Eurovision 2017 with his song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
After taking a one year break to revitalize the Festival da Canção brand, Portugal is back in the game — stronger than ever and climbing the bookies’ odds table. Salvador Sobral oozes charisma and a singular personality in this jazz/pop ballad, channeling Ella Fitzegerald realness as he conquers viewers with his simplicity and quirky delivery .
The “Amar Pelos Dois” lyrics tells the story of a lost love and Salvador’s continuous search to find her. He viscerally and repeatedly asks for his beloved to return, making it clear he was nothing before her.
As he says: “If one day someone asks about me, Tell them I lived to love you, Before you, I only existed, Tired and with nothing to give.”
The classical instrumentation and Salvador’s sublime interpretation help create unforgettable atmosphere. You can read the touching lyrics — in Portuguese and in the English translation — below.
SALVADOR SOBRAL – “AMAR PELOS DOIS”
“AMAR PELOS DOIS” — PORTUGUESE LYRICS
Se um dia alguém perguntar por mim
Diz que vivi p’ra te amar
Antes de ti, só existi
Cansado e sem nada p’ra dar
Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho
Talves devagarinho possas voltar a aprender
Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho
Talves devagarinho possas voltar a aprender
Se o teu coração não quiser ceder
Não sentir paixão, não quiser sofrer
Sem fazer planos do que virá depois
O meu coração pode amar pelos dois
“AMAR PELOS DOIS” ENGLISH LYRICS / TRANSLATION
If one day someone asks about me
Tell them I lived to love you
Before you, I only existed
Tired and with nothing to give
My dear, listen to my prayers
I beg you to return, to want me again
I know that one can’t love alone
Maybe slowly you might learn again
My dear, listen to my prayers
I beg you to return, to want me again
I know that one can’t love alone
Maybe slowly you might learn again
If your heart doesn’t wish to give in
Not to feel passion, not to suffer
Without making plans of what will come after
My heart can love for the both of us
Hi there,I log on to your new stuff named “”Amar Pelos Dois” lyrics — Salvador Sobral (Portugal, Eurovision 2017) | wiwibloggs” like every week.Your writing style is awesome, keep it up! And you can look our website about ????? ???.
I’m pretty pleased to uncover this great site. I wanted to thank you for ones time for
this particularly wonderful read!! I definitely savored every
bit of it and I have you book marked to check out new information in your website.
After the voting, what was the percentage of Portugal’s song in this year’s contest, does anybody know? Thank you.
(The percentage should silence those who hate, do not agree/find the song average, etc…where is your sense of tolerance/solidarity/humanism??)
uma canção encantadora, e um interprete muito humilde o que na minha opinião o distinguiu dos outros que pisaram aquele palco, Parabéns Salvador e quero ouvir mais..
I start my day with this song. Each morning 🙂
Luísa Sobral (his sister) wrote the song and he just sang it , so the credit should go to her and she is a much better singer than he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfLXD5spY4U
His comments after the Eurovision Final were nothing short of “short man syndrome self-absorbed-ness”
I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you make this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz reply as I’m looking to construct my own blog and would like to know where u got this from. cheers
Read more »
This is the most miserable song I’ve ever heard. My personal favourite was Gabbani and his Occhidentali’s Karma. But, apparently, the jury didn’t read Marx or Heraclitus and don’t give a damn about the state of humanity these days. Instead, they reward another whimp singing your regular song about… Refugees? No one would have guessed if they hadn’t mentioned it. Ugh! I have lost faith in Eurovision when they awarded Lordi and Wurst. The contest has _nothing_ to do with music, but politics and idiocracy. The only good thing about it is that we get to find pearls like Gabbani’s… Read more »
are you semi-illiterate
It would have less dreary sung by that gorilla.
Is song is like Easy Living by Billie Holiday
A ultima letra da palavra talvez e um Z e nao um S.
Viva Portugal !!
Here’s the lyrics in 17 languages http://amarpelos2.com/
What a self absorbed, arrogant statement.
Very nice song and top interpretation ! He is my winner for EU song 2017….and Croatia, too , My friend!
Lovely presentation and it’s my winner for tonight’s Eurovision Song Contest.
I was crying when I listen the song. And I am start finding the meaning of the lyrics. It’s beautiful. thank you for sharing Bernardo.
From Indonesia
This has me tearing up… what a beautiful song and wonderful interpretation.
Thanks so much for the translation – the lyric and the articulation really brings out the extraordinary beauty of the Portuguese language, with a real economy and depth that reminds me of the great Cesaria Evora.
Salvador No 1 !
Wonderful song! Incredible performance-bravo Salvador!
FORÇA SALVADOR! VIVA PORTUGAL!

Intriguing performance, although incomprehensible at some points. I literally could not hear the words. I can understand if people like this, but it’s an average song, nothing exceptional. The lyrics are average as well.
He has a heart problem and it’s a nice change to hear something new and fresh not every singer have to hava load and extraordinary vocal
I don’t like when they’re screaming, either, and agree that this was new and fresh to the public tired of loud and “visual” songs. I ended up voting for Portugal as this entry grew on me. If today had been May 10, I would not have written what I wrote in the first comment.
than you know nothing of real music :)…
I somewhat changed my opinion on Amar pelo dois. It’s enjoyable, and overall it’s an above-average song, but not exceptional. I still find the lyrics to be average.
Winner!
Absolutamente marvillosa. Si no gana Portugal es que la gente no sabe nada de musica y sensibilidad.
‘Amar Pelos Dois’ is not my cup of tee, but I appreciate it. Lyrics are one of the best this year. Very touching.
I hate this????
You’re not the only one who hates this, i hate this song and lyrics too
@Jeffo
Oops, don’t know what i did there! lol

Thank you Wiwibloggs! 😀
After the win at the national competition, he performed the song with his sister who wrote the song. This came-off WAY better IMHB, making much sense.
I wish he would team up with her or another female.
Go Portugal! (from NYC)
The lyrics are do emotional, true and deep! Especially the last verse! When I learnt about the lyrics, tears started to roll down my face.
The fact that adorable Salvador sings in Portuguese adds this entry that unique “saudade”. It’s pure magic!
@lacrymea, the youtube link you posted makes no sense…
“The “Amar Pelos Dois” lyrics tells the story of a lost love and Pedro’s continuous search to find her. He viscerally and repeatedly asks for his beloved to return, making it clear he was nothing before her.” – Bernardo, who is Pedro?
@James: Of course there is! 🙂
