Charlotte Perrelli Melodifestivalen Sweden

Charlotte Perrelli is best known for her frothy schlager numbers. But every now and then, even the greatest divas need to kick off their heels and slow down. Which is exactly what the Eurovision 1999 winner has done for her latest release “Start A Fire”.

Her collaboration with Popstars alum Brolle sees the “Hero” hitmaker take a rockier route. It’s a big anthemic number, perfectly manufactured to get any arena to its feet. The track is neither edgy nor cool, in fact it’s ridiculously corny. Yet therein lies its charm. The woahs are infectious, while Charlotte and Brolle’s harmonies are simply delicious. Lyrically the song is about a relationship that’s already dead — “don’t start a fire when there’s nothing left to burn”. The fallout is so dramatic that it’s a wonder either singer survived to tell the tale — “the ground is shaking, the universe falls apart”. But Perrelli’s delivery is completely at odds with the song’s message. She sings of destruction with such joy and vigour that the context melts away. This is pure senseless cheese and we’re gobbling it right up.

“Start A Fire” Live – Brolle & Charlotte Perrelli

Of course the sparkles and glitter haven’t been locked up for good. As we saw during Melodifestivalen 2016, Charlotte can unleash her inner schlager diva when required. Not only did her performance of “Här står jag” steal the show during semi-final two, it also gave her her biggest hit for years. The tongue-in-cheek lyrics gently poked fun at the modern Melfest and the fortunes of Perrelli and her ilk. She almost bettered Helene Fischer’s original “Atemlos Durch Die Nacht”, and proved why she’s the queen of a genre that’s most definitely not dead.

Brolle & Charlotte Perrelli – Start A Fire Lyrics

When your heart’s on the loose again
When all your dreams seem to pale and fade away
When your mind and your soul is divided in two
When all the colours of love turn into blue

Your mind is aching, your bones are breaking
The ground is shaking, the universe falls apart
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing left to burn
And you give and you live and you learn
Like my mother said, what you give you won’t get back in return
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn

When you’re down on your knees again
When you’re down for the count when you rise again

Your mind is aching, your bones are breaking
The ground is shaking, the universe falls apart
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing left to burn
And you give and you live and you learn
Like my mother said, what you give you won’t get back in return
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn

Don’t let this fire, don’t let this fire burn
Don’t let this fire, don’t let this fire burn out
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing left to burn

And you give and you live and you learn
Like my mother said, what you give you won’t get back in return
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
Just like a shot right through your heart
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn
And you give and you live and you learn
Like my mother said, what you give you won’t get back in return
Don’t start a fire when there’s nothing to burn

It is the same song titles as the great Azeri entry of 2014. “”Start A Fire”” by Dilara. I really liked the trapeze artist. Much better than the last two songs from them for me… Anyway this is great song in itself even if a little repetitive but that makes it very very catchy. Charlotte will always be one of the ESC legend. 🙂
