It might seem unreal, but Nelly Furtado — the Grammy Award winning international superstar — might actually consider representing Portugal at Eurovision 2017.

Rose Slanic, Nelly’s manager, has told Eurovisionary that Miss Furtado is open to the possibility.

She said: “If RTP contacts us with further details and a considerable amount of time, we might consider the idea.”

“MANEATER” — NELLY FURTADO

Born in Vancouver, Canada, Nelly is the daughter of Maria Manuela and António José Furtado, who originally hail from São Miguel Island in the Azores.

She rose to fame in 2000 with the release of her debut album Whoa, Nelly!, which included her best-known single “I’m Like A Bird”.

Subsequent albums included gems like “Promiscuous”, “Maneater” and “Say it Right”, and have resulted in the sale of more than 40 million records worldwide.

“SAY IT RIGHT” — NELLY FURTADO

Nelly hasn’t released any chart-toppers recently, but she’s been busy in the studio working on a comeback album.

We’re loving the idea of having a Eurovision song on the set list, and welcoming her to the Wiwi Jam 2017 in Ukraine.

There’s just one big hurdle: If Nelly wants to represent the Iberian nation at Eurovision, she’ll need to win Festival da Canção. Given its occasionally dated winners, her radio-friendly, contemporary tracks won’t do her any favours.

We’re sure everyone is fan-girling hard right now and screaming internal selection, but a competition is a competition.

This much we know: Portugal has embraced Nelly.

In 2004 she sang “Força” — the anthem for Euro 2004 — which was held in Portugal that year.

“PROMISCUOUS” — NELLY FURTADO

Are you excited for Nelly’s comeback album and her potential Eurovision run? Do you think that RTP should consider her? Or would you prefer to see Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro fly the flag for Portugal? Let us know below!

@charles You say that we should care more about the quality of the music instead of the popularity of the singer singing it which is totally right. You always keep going lon about importancy of great songs and stuff and then you said ” since Nelly has been absent for the last 4 years or so and it’s been 10 years since her popularity peek …what can see bring of exciting to the table? A great song? Seriously people need to stop creating fuzz about the people involved and be more excited about what musically is being offered regardless of… Read more »

@Jr esc nl: And you’re acting as if you couldn’t read properly or understand a piece of written information. Nobody here is complaining about Nelly herself … read again, nobody here is complaining about Nelly herself .. do I have to repeat this a third time before you mess it up again?

How silly to copy something from Eurovisionairy. It’s the most unproffessional Eurovision site I know…… News based on assumptions and ridicule conclusions. This proofs it too.

@denis and Charles
You guys are acting as if Nelly furtado can’t sing at all and will send a bad song but guess what? She actually makes quality music and we expect her to bring that to the Eurovision stage so what are you guys complaining about?

@Charles, I agree with you completely, it should be the music that wins out over everything, but sadly Eurovision is not about the music anymore. It is a popularity contest. The same countries qualify every year, regardless of the utter crap they send, certain countries are favoured over others. Do you honestly think Portugal would even qualify without the help of a well-known star? I don’t think so and history isn’t on their side. The contest is also politics of the highest order, as we see with this years winner, Australia’s continued participation among others. Yes, I agree with you… Read more »

@Denis: Finally? I have always expressed myself on this matter this way! We have been looking at Eurovision from all angles except the ONE that matters the most: MUSIC … everything else is nothing but distraction and bs. We just need great songs. Period.

Charles, agreed with you! Finally some sense. Everyone seem so quick to turn ESC into a popularity concert and who sends the biggest stars, without focusing on what should matter: The quality of the chosen acts.
Only wanting big famous acts to compete eventually risks to devalue the whole contest.

It’s unbelievable the effort people make to turn Eurovision into a popularity show where the artist is far more important and relevant … instead of the one thing that actually is still the centrepiece of it all … the music … Portugal opting for internal selection using a star like Nelly Furtado is not at all their way of doing things and RTP will never chance that for the sake of the Eurovision “game” … and since Nelly has been absent for the last 4 years or so and it’s been 10 years since her popularity peek …what can see… Read more »

Surely if RTP can secure her they won’t make her enter and win FDC.

Even if RTP have used FDC every year up until now the BBC had also used national selection every year until they found blue and subsequently Bonnie Tyler

I see from the text and a few people commenting that she wouldn’t have a chance of winning Fesival da Cancao because of the dated song winners history, but the truth is those dated songs actually win because there’s nothing better to vote for, apart from those old-fashioned songs, so I’m sure if Nelly takes part in the competition it’ll be very easy for her to win! Besides that, she’s very popular in Portugal!

I repeat my stance: Considering the dated and old-fashioned national selection Portugal has she probably wouldn’t stand a chance of even being chosen.
But if she by some chance would be the chosen one, there is no guarantee she would win or even be top 10. As always the song come first. Saying Portugal will be top 10 means people will only go for the celebrity factor, not for the qualities of the act.
Besides, it strikes me that every-time “famous” acts goes to ESC they always flop. Like Cascada. So Portugal and Nelly would be wise to think it over..

If she actually wants to do it for Portugal, and manages to come up with an awesome song, i think Portugal needs to ditch festival de cancao right away and select Nelly in an internal selection.

Portugal needs an artist of this calibre! Definitely gets my approval. I have thrown some (bad) shapes on the dance floor to some of her songs, especially ‘Maneater’ and ‘Promiscuous’. As long as the song is of the quality of those two, Portugal could be in my Top 10 for the first time since 2009. I hope this happens. It will also open the gates to more well known faces taking part in the contest, rather than a JT interval act, or Guy Sebastian and Dami I’m representing a country that shouldn’t really be there (sorry, not sorry) 🙂 fingers… Read more »

It’d be awesome if it happened, and I’d be down with another PNW in Eurovision.

The question is, does Portugal actually have the guts to try and break out of this coccoon of self-righteous failure they’ve built for themselves?

If that’s the case, then Portugal can invite Brazilian singers soon. Especially the popular ones and those with good vocals.

That wouldn’t be a bad thing actually and I would be very optimistic about a good placement for Portugal, especially with a song in Portuguese.

It will be awesome. However, she will lose the contest, as public and some stupid juries downgrade big stars. See what happened to DJ Bobo, Las Ketchup, Kate Ryan and many others. Leave this contest for people with no capability to sing and dance. Moreover, except for Mans, Lena and Loreen I don’t know anybody else whose song has been played widely. However, these performers got lost afterwards. What’s the purpose? Does she want a quick end of her career?-if yes, let her be there.

Probably just a rumour. Would be awesome though if it turned out to be true.
But considering the old-fashioned entries Portugal usually send she probably wouldn’t stand a chance.
