The bookies are keeping us on our well-pedicured toes. Since our last update on May 5, and following the First Semi-Final on Tuesday, the odds to win Eurovision 2017 are shifting, suggesting a proper two-horse race between Italy’s Francesco Gabbani and Portugal’s Salvador Sobral.

The “Amar pelos dois” singer has moved into a solid second position with odds as low as 2/1, with the majority of bookies slashing Salvador’s odds to as low as 6/4.

He’s now nipping at the heels of Italy‘s Francesco Gabbani, whose odds have widened slightly since the airing of his snippet during the semi final one broadcast. His odds have now risen to 11/10 — the first time they have been above 1 in a very long time.

This suggests that Portugal performed very well in its semi-final, giving the bookies’ added confidence he could slow Italy’s momentum.

Another big mover after the first semi final is Belgium.

Ahead of today’s semi the Eurovision community worried that Blanche‘s underwhelming rehearsals might upend her chances of advancing.

But she delivered a strong performance during the semi-final and woke up to find herself in the iTunes charts in 19 different countries. She’s now moved from tenth in the betting odds five days ago to fourth today. At this rate she’s going to peak just in time for the grand final.

Further down the list we see big movements from the United Kingdom.

Lucie Jones — a West End star and X Factor veteran — is a story of progression. The original version of her song left us saying meh. But she brought it to life live at the UK selection, gave it a proper revamp to pull it into 2017 and arrived in Kyiv with epic staging that has seen her rocket up the odds table.

She’s moved from twenty-second in the odds to fifth in just five days.

Final note before I shut up:
I think people have forgotten how dominating Italy has been this season, just because it wasn’t in semifinal. It won OGAE with most points ever, polls predict he would win easily and the hype surrounding him is bigger than Rybak & Loreen put together. It really is Italy’s year.
Anything but an Italian win would be quite weird actually..

UK does well with ballads 2nd in 1988 by just one Point, 3rd 2009, 5th 2009 I haven’t heard all songs but it clear five UK, ITALY , PORTUGAL BULGARIA ARE MAIN CONTENDERS. IF UK Does not win I like to see Portugal win nice song and have never won. Ok, let’s try to explain it in english: What I think is that Italy, being one of the first countries releasing their song, right now it can not help them. We already know the lyrics and choreography and yes, we do love it, but there’s nothing more to show that can surprise us (not even the ape). On the other side, Portugal can still surprise people (I’m portuguese so I’ve listen it a million times and saw all the rehearsals but tuesday’s performance still got me like “wooow!!” ) I don’t know if I’m being reasonable here or is just… Read more »

This music of Salvador Sobral is the best!
EUROVISION is not for movie producers….
Salvador only use a Microphone to sing and not need a show stage whith massive virtual effects…!
EUROVISION is for sing and not for Music vídeo…!
The only one that is real is Salvador, voice + piano + string NO MORE VIRTUAL EFFECTS!!!!

I’m Italian and appreciate both songs, but we have to acknowledge that Italian and Portuguese people are lacking objectivety (which I totally understand, it’s normal to root for your own country, after all). You can’t speak on behalf of everyone though. Most people will hear the songs for the first or second time on Saturday night, they might get surprised by the energic and entertaining performance by Francesco or get moved by Salvador’s touching voice. There is no such thing as “nothing can surprise us”. There are way too many people watching and voting to get an idea of who… Read more »

Italy has constantly been at top since the song won, and it hasn’t moved away from the top spot. Besides it won the OGAE with record number of points getting 12 from almost every country. Everyone predicts it will be a landslide win for Italy, bigger than Rybak or Loreen. Don’t think Portugal or any country will be able to reach Italy. Besides Italy is almost loved by everyone. Portugal is far more divisive, it really is a 50/50 song. Some love it, some hate it. And finally the hit factor has to be inlcluded as well, since that is… Read more »

Although I do not think Italy will win by a landslide, it could easily take the top spot. If Francesco improves his vocals, he could have the juries support too. It was a big hit before and I don’t think anyone else could win the televoting, to be fair honest. However, I do not underestimate Portugal. The song is divisive and might not stand out on Saturday night when we will hear at least other 15 ballads after him, but he has huge support and is beloved. The commentators could also point out he has a heart disease and that… Read more »

My prediction:

Italy, Portugal, Armenia & UK are the top 10 safe bets. Of them, I see Only Italy or Portugal winning. Belgium will be 8th-12th, Moldova OR Bulgaria will go top 5, but not both, and Sweden will be the flop of the final.

Here’s what I think. 1.) United Kingdom and Portugal are two most deserving winners of ESC 2017, Portugal’s staging and song is just incredible and with the UK the overall package from start to end with staging is exquisite. 2.) Italy’s entry maybe catchy and I like THE AUDIO not the music video. The staging however I’m not impressed with its just too “Look at me, Look at me, Look at me,” is just too much it a bit like Georgia last year in Stockholm its just too much. 3.) The songs are hard to compare… But it is a song contest, not a singing or staging contest… In that department, Belgium, Portugal and Italy are serving inspired, quality songs and I think that that will be the jury’s top 3. I like the staging of the UK and she has the best voice in the contest, but the song just is not up to the level of those 3. The best overall package is probably Portugal, but in the televote, anything can happen. I expect a tight race on Saturday! And don’t rule out Azerbeijan, Armenia or France (probably… Read more »

I think that betters were being cautious on Portugal before the semi-final, in case it was too slow tempo to qualify.

But now that it’s in the final, I can understand the odds shortening. I think it’s the next mostly likely to win should Italy come short.

It’s just disappointing to see one sided bias shown to Portugal by a number of members from Wiwibloggs. Yes song is lovely. It be nice to see other songs and artists given the same fawning over that Portugal has received. If you go by the iTunes Charts at the moment Belgium would win the Tele votes. 1. You know, I don’t thin Portugal or any other act will overtake Italy. Italy has been the constant favourite since he was announced, and hasn’t moved away from the top spot. The one thing that can stop them is if the performance turns out to be below expectations. If last night’s performance was anything to go by we are headed for a disappointment..Hope I am wrong!
Portugal is to divisive to win, you either love it or hate it.

Mattias Sollerman

Divisive is good.
It is better for instance if 10% of the audience has a song as their favorite and the rest has it in last place, than for everyone to have the song as their number 10, or number 2-5 even, as people only vote for their favorites.
Jury members rank 1-42 so that is a bit different ofc.

Denis
Denis

Yes, but if the purpose is to win which many countries seem to aim for then divisive isn’t good. You must appeal to all, not just 10%. That won’t give you enough votes to win.
Portugal doesn’t have a mass appeal. Some love it, some hate it. It’s a true 50/50 song, not universally loved and praised.
Italy on the other hand is more appealing and more people love it than hate it. So therefore it has the edge.

If you look at youtube atm you can see that Portugal is by far the most viewed video of last night. It doesn’t predict the winner but it generally shows you that it had enough of an impact to warrant a second viewing. I honestly think it won the televote, the ones that do well on youtube are the ones people voted for most.

Mattias Sollerman

No, you don’t have to appeal to all. You only need a big enough percentage to vote for you. 20% should be plenty enough to win televote. Jamala last year certainly didn’t appeal to all, in fact many hated it, but it got 2nd in televote nonetheless. In 2015, the opera song from Italy managed to win televote by a fairly large margin. Thing is, you can’t down vote a song, so it doesn’t matter how many people hate it. The only thing that matters is how many have it as their favorite. Besides, Amar pelos Dois is charting all… Read more »

Odds basically describe probability. If a song has odds 3/2 to win, that means “out of 5 times, the song will win 2 times and lose 3 times” which is the same as a probability of 40%. If you bet on a song at 3/2 odds and it wins, you will get your money back plus 3/2 (150%) of your bet. So a €100 bet at 3/2 odds can win €250. Only the British isles use fractional odds (3/2). The rest of Europe uses decimal odds (2.5) which basically just shows the multiplier for how much money you get back.… Read more »

There is too much at stake here for the organizers to risk real information leaking out. Of course, there are always people who are gullible enough to think that they are tipped on confidential information. You seriously know nothing about how telecommunication companies work do you? The information passes through hundreds of people and all it takes is 1 person to profit by disclosing information to bookmakers. There is no way that all booking agencies started shortening Armenia’s odds right after the contest to 11 (essentially putting it ahead of Sweden and Bulgaria) and then dropping it to 40-50 3 hours later. Same goes for Sweden and Azerbaijan.

No inside information needs to be leaked.
If a bookmaker suddenly gets huge bets on Portugal and Belgium from a small group of people in Kiev, that means something is going on. The bookmaker will shorten the odds and other bookmakers will notice that, starting a chain reaction.
This is just one possible explanation though.

What gives me hope of a top half finish for the UK is that Molly flopped because of her nervousness about the whole Eurovision experience and underwhelming staging (Joe and Jake suffered from poor staging), Lucie doesn’t have that. And she has had so far the best support for a UK entry since I started watching Eurovision in 2006. Will she be a shock winner? No but as long as her odds stay the same up until after the final running order is announced, she will get top 13 at worst.

Maybe a load of people saw the Portuguese song, loved it and put loads of money on it, maybe some were waiting to see it pass the semi-final stage, maybe information being passed on about it winning with a large margin were fabrications, maybe we shouldn’t use the odds as an almighty spirit light to tell us the result.

The question here is: after he sang on the semifinal, the odds drifted a little. It didn’t have the expect effect. Only a little before the results were posted, we saw massive amounts of money on it. The price came from 8 to 4 in a few minutes. It was surely some insider. I’m pretty sure that Portugal won the semifinal by a large margin. You don’t see odds moving like this for no reason.

I just don’t know how so many take for granted that Portugal will win the juries’ votes when Il Volo was placed sixth by them two years ago. Salvador and Il Volo have a lot in common: emotional ballad, excellent performance and very poor staging. I don’t get it.

Very different concepts. Il Volo is a predictable kind of act. I don’t mean it’s bad, but when you see 3 or 4 Italian guys dressing like that, you already know what you are going to hear. Even if it has quality, people are already a little tired of this kind of music.

Since when do juries vote based on “predictability”? They were unquestionably the best vocalists back in 2015 and it was not enough for the juries (I assume the lack of a good staging might have played a part in that). And same can be said about Salvador.

I’m talking about the song, not about the technical abilities. I never thought il Volo was going to win, not even to be on top 3. Salvador is going to be there for sure.

Ok, but I am trying to be objective here. Personal feelings regarding the two songs do not matter. Whether you liked their song or not, it does not matter, and Grande Amore was praised by many and won the televoting. It’s just seem crazy to me how so many think Salvador can win the jury so easily when they paid dust to Il Volo.

I hope the jury see the quality in Portugals song, but you might have a point. They are maby give higher points to music that feels morden than good classic songs! But I really hope you are wrong!
I really likede Il volo, but I feel so much more when I listen på Portugals song!

Fingers crossed that Italy win and not Portugal, because I really don’t like Portugal’s song, too old fashioned for me. Can’t see UK winning, it will come top 10 with juries but it will do bad with televoters as they normally do. I thought Armenia’s odds would be better after last night, they were my winners of the first semi

I think that the battle for the first place will be between Portugal and Bulgaria. Italy is too overrated this year in my opinion. But you also have to keep in mind that there’s also the Russian diaspora and they all vote for another country because Russia don’t participate. I suppose they will vote for Bulgaria because Kristian lives in Russia and participated in the Russian version of the Voice kids.
(Or they don’t vote at all.)

I would easily replace Belgium for Finland,
Finland sounded much better and had better staging.
I know everyone says Blanche is shy etc, she knew what she was getting herself into, or else she wouldn’t take part in ESC. I liked her song when i first heard it on youtube…but live…i don’t wanna talk about it…
But now that she is going to the finals i have to say
“come on girl! if you want to win you need to show it”

Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania,UK overrated by fans and many eurovision sites, bloggs, bookmakers.Salvador didn won 2 times televote in his own country. Gabbani only in final, in his 3 presentation of song in San Remo. Romania kitch staging. Bulgaria also overrated ,not so good song

I don’t think these songs are overrated. In fact this is the first time in many years that I see songs with some quality on the first spots of the ranking. Portugal, Italy, UK, Bulgaria are all good songs. Romania is indeed a very cheap and annoying song, and I’m surprised that it’s not the favourite, because usually that’s what happens with this kind of song.

Semifinal 2 is the strongest and you will see how everything will change.
Estonia, Ireland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria.
Next day we will see Verona very high.

Blanche delivered a “strong” performance? It was terrible.

The thing – average ESC viewer is not minding how performance was delivered. Look at what happened with Finland.

in fact the contest is named “Eurovision SONG contest” for some reason. We all know that it’s important to have a good singer, a good stage and sometimes good marketing. This song was already “famous” before the contest, I think that’s the only reason why it qualified for the final. It is a good song, but technically it was a horrible performance by the singer. But then, take a look at Greece! She would not qualify to any cheap talent show in the world. But again, she qualified for other reasons, not for her talent!

Whether you like it or not, “City Lights” has been a fan-favorite since its release two months ago. I don’t know why so many were surprised when she qualified. Sure, she didn’t deliver yesterday night (though she did two days ago when she performed for the judges) and it was tragic that Finland didn’t get in, but regardless of all of this – people like Blanche’s song.
