Eurovision 2021 26 March

Every weekday, between now and the contest in May, the team from wiwibloggs will round up the latest titbits from the world of Eurovision 2021. We trawl through Instagram, Twitter and elsewhere so that y’all don’t have to. In today’s Daily Digest Montaigne becomes a drag queen, Epic Sax Guy does “Sugar” and Lithuania’s Culture Minsitry proposes that The Roop get vaccine priority. But first…

Cyprus teases Elena Tsagrinou live-on-tape performance

The “El Diablo” singer recently filmed her Eurovision 2021 live-on-tape performance in Sofia, Bulgaria. And now, courtesy of the official CYBC Eurovision Instagram account, we’ve been gifted a sneak peek. Elena is seen in a sea of red and orange lights standing centre stage with two dancers in a diagonal formation behind her. Elena wears what seems to be a white or golden body suit, while her devilish dancers are all in red. It’s definitely looking hotter than
sriracha! (William)

Tusse spends another week at number one

Tusse topped last week’s Swedish charts in the wake of the Melodifestivalen 2021 final. And almost two weeks on from the show, “Voices” isn’t budging from the number one spot. The latest Sverigetopplistan chart is filled with other Melfest acts, including three more in the top ten — Clara Klingenström at #4, Eric Saade at #7 and Dotter at #9.

Manizha takes part in campaign to improve self esteem amongst teenagers

Manizha’s Eurovision 2021 song “Russian Woman” is all about breaking down stereotypes. But the singer isn’t content to keep her message for the stage. Even her commercial partnerships seek to push the boundaries. She’s part of Dove’s campaign to protect children’s self-esteem. She elaborates on Instagram: “Pull in your stomach”, “Don’t slouch”, “Who is this sweet bun we have?”, “I was much thinner at your time”, “Listen, well, I want the best.” Every third parent would like to change something in their daughter’s appearance. These are data from VTsIOM and Dove. So does bullying start at home? This is a new video project of the Dove brand, in which I was lucky enough to participate. This is not our first time working with Dove. I respect them and thank them for the fact that for more than 6 years they have been conducting free lessons in Russian schools to improve the self-esteem of adolescents in cooperation with the Research Institute of Child and Adolescent Health”.

Montaigne becomes a drag queen

Montaigne has never been afraid to play around with her aesthetic. In the past year, she’s gone from blue curls to a pink buzz cut. However, we’ve never seen her in drag — until now. Appearing on the online talk show Drag It Out, Montaigne placed her face in the hands of Hannah Conda and Alright, Hey! While Hannah did her makeup, Alright, Hey! asked her about all things Eurovision. Montaigne reveals that Dami Im’s glitter glove is one of her all-time favourite Eurovision costumes, before adopting Monta-genie as her drag name.

Lithuania’s Culture Ministry suggests The Roop should be prioritised for the COVID-19 vaccine

Different countries are taking different approaches to their COVID-19 vaccine rollout. However, Lithuania has become the first country to recommend that their Eurovision act gets priority. Lithuania’s Culture Ministry made the proposal earlier this week. This would place The Roop in the same category as school staff and medical students. The Minister of Health will make the final decision. Meanwhile, The Roop’s frontman Vaidotas Valiukevičius says that all three members of the group will take the vaccine if offered. “If we go unvaccinated to the competition, we will have to be tested constantly, which does not provide any protection, so we would spend a lot of time isolating with protection. The vaccine would allow to communicate more freely with the media and continue to spread its message”, he says.

Epic Sax Guy does “Sugar”

Moldova’s Eurovision 2017 act Sunstroke Project sent some love the way of Natalia Gordienko and “Sugar”. Sergey “Epic Sax Guy” Stepanov played his sax to the sound of the track’s instrumental break, while vocalist Sergei Ialovitski rocked out beside him. They caption the clip “12 POINTS GOES TO MOLDOVA!!!”.

Additional contributions from William.

If only other artists also made an effort to be interesting or fun in some way then they would have gotten reviews as well. What are even James Newman or Lesley Roy doing at all to promote themselves? Jedward are still promoting themselves more than all other Irish eurovision entrants have done combined the last 10 years.
