On Thursday Dutch songstress S10 revealed her Eurovision 2022 song “De Diepte” inside the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. The glorious setting, which is steeped in cinematic history, was an appropriate choice. Her song, which translates as “The Depth”, has a thoroughly artistic sensibility. Gripping from start to finish, it rides on a wave of emotion — just like the most noteworthy of films.

“It’s a tribute to the sadness and memories that you carry with you”, she tells Eurovision.tv. “Everyone experiences difficult times in their lives. That’s something we all have in common and I hope you will feel less alone when you listen to the song”.

S10 “De Diepte” — The Netherlands at Eurovision 2022

Broadcaster AVROTROS selected S10  that’s Stien den Hollander  as the country’s contestant. This followed an open call for songs after Rotterdam hosted Eurovision in May 2021. Representing a new generation of Dutch pop music, the North Holland native will be the first performer to sing in Dutch since 2010 when Sieneke crashed out of the semis.

For this special release, the country departed from its usual prime-time television release. Instead, AVROTROS travelled to the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. Voted as the most-beautiful cinema in the world by Time Out in 2021, this venue celebrated its 100th anniversary in October.

Eurovision stars Duncan Laurence, Stefania, Cezar Sampson and Gjon’s Tears had a pre-listen to the song. Their first reaction revealed that the entry has strong vocals and deep, meaningful lyrics.

S10’s Eurovision song

S10 presented her Eurovision 2022 bid live on NPO Radio 2 as well as on different platforms. Similar to last year, the delegation’s social media accounts premiered the music video, alongside the official Eurovision YouTube channel.

On Tuesday, the broadcaster uploaded a small teaser from the song’s music video. This teaser saw S10 dramatically destroying a fridge to then sneak into the empty kitchen device.

Earlier, AVROTROS announced that S10’s creative team will consist of director Marnix Kaart, creative supervisor Wouter van Ransbeek and light designer Henk Jan van Beek

De diepte made more than 200k on Spotify in the Netherlands within 12 hours. Ofc it just debut at 1.
Also 1 on Apple or Itunes
That’s what you get when braodcasters and labels promote ans care about local talent

It’s quite a big debut, I think bigger than Arcade. If the Dutch don’t like the song they simply won’t listen to it, no matter how much you promote it. So there’s definitely something there in terms of commercial potential.

Yes. Song is great and Dutch people like it a lot otherwise they wouldn’t play it. It’s very hard to make a big debut. Having a team behind and people believing in your talent and song also helps. Many factors came together I guess.

Im still not that used to this song, but it’s definitely a very beautiful and emotional song (anyway I’ll end up completely loving it in a few more days) With an intimate staging, maybe with some contemporary dancers, this could be something huge (it already is) I hope this comes atleast top 5.

This is really nice and I’ll probably be voting for her anyway but I did also check out one of her other songs, “Dans Mij Naar Huis”, and I ended up a bit disappointed it wasn’t that one instead…

I really like this song! It probably won’t win, but it still should do pretty well. Dutch is a beautiful language and I’m glad they decided to not send a song in English this time.

This entry does have potential, and I’m really sure that this will qualify (unless, staging, of course).

Results-wise, I think this will be top 15 at best, but I’ll wait for all the songs to be released before deciding.

I just listened to “Adem je in” BTW.

Current ranking (subject to change):

  1. Italy
  2. Poland
  3. Spain
  4. Norway
  5. Ukraine
  6. Netherlands
  7. Australia
  8. Finland
  9. Albania
  10. Estonia
  11. Czech Republic
  12. Latvia
  13. Lithuania
  14. Malta
  15. Israel
  16. Ireland
  17. Croatia

This is the first time I hear Dutch since I started watching Eurovision in 2013. It sounds just awesome! I think this entry will stand out. It’s incredible that a song about sadness produces other feelings in your soul: tranquility, peace and even hope! I wouldn’t say it’s a depressing song. Besides, her voice is so beautiful!

What an angelic voice, and what a stunning song. I love that it’s in Dutch, and I am about to Google S10 to see what else she has out, music-wise. I also checked the lyrics, and the words are just wonderful. I hope this does well, to encourage more countries to release songs like this in their own language. 9 out of 10 for me.

Translated lyrics: Do you know that feeling When your dream doesn’t work out Are you ever afraid It will always stay this way? Because it’s been raining for days And I can’t see a thing You and me together, right? It was always going to be like that (Chorus) ooh, aah Here in the deep I keep hearing your name Ooh aah I’m deep and I don’t want to let you go I’m taking cover under the table And I hope you will find me I’ve been waiting all evening Oh, I’m like a child I’m gritting my teeth again… Read more »

That was the only part I wasn’t crazy for. I get the feeling but all I could think of was ‘How irresponsible”. Could have had the same effect with a closet or wardrobe – pulling out all the clothes and throwing them aside before climbing in and hiding away from the world.

It’s for people like you that they put in the description of microwaves a warning to not put your cat inside to dry. I don’t think the fridge is meant in a literal way. And if this video inspires someone to close him/herself inside a fridge than that’s totally on them. Not because she made a beautiful video.

It’s a very good song and it’s nice to hear Dutch again. With Russia out of Semi 1, there’s one spot that could go to anyone; maybe Netherlands? With a good staging anything’s possible.

I already like it a lot and it feels like a grower. It tickes a lot of boxes for me (beautiful voice, classy arrangement, sincere lyrics), though it probably misses that final one that would make it an Eurovision winner. But hey, staging can make that stripped down bridge a moment. Both “humming hooks” are quite strong, easy to memorize and sing along, which is a nice thing to have when your song is in a language few people speak. By the way, this is a good example that any language can provide beautiful songs.

I love it. I also feel like opinions don’t really count for much when the song has been out only a day. If this doesn’t qualify, it will be the fault of the televoters and juries – not S10’s.

I’ll add that it won’t be the fault of the Dutch language either. But I think this is will qualify with ease. The first semi is full of high energy songs, I’m hoping this will help highlighting at least the Dutch and the Lithuanian songs.

I hope so. Finland 2017 and Portugal 2019 showed to me that quality doesn’t always count for much, immediacy matters more. After Jeangu’s zero televote points last year, I promised myself to stop caring about results.

I always lose songs I love during the semis and the 2 you mentioned were between them.

Took another look in the 1st semi and it will be a tough one. The Greek song is supposed to be a sad ballad too (there’s a leaked demo, but I’m waiting for the official release). So, we already have Croatia, Greece, Lithuania and the Netherlands with women singing slower songs. Áurea and Maro are contenders in Portugal. Marketa and the sisters can win in Iceland… There won’t be room for all of them. 🙁

Sweet, cute, a good song. And I love Dutch. I am not sure if it will qualify for the final or how far it can go. But it’s a decent entry by the Netherlands. I feel it’s going to do better with younger audiences.

Off topic (but not too far off genre) – I just googled ‘UK Eurovision 2022’ and clicked on the ‘news’ tab – there’s a news story that’s been taken down on Talent Recap that says London Grammar is representing the UK from 20 hrs ago. That would be totally amazing it were true.

To all those complaining about the quality of the songs so far… Write the song of the century..Send it to Eurovision 2023 and see how you take the criticism.
This song is for all those who are struggling with life and love sometimes. Not your average day “let’s all be happy” entry and I applaud it for that.

Really unnecessary comment. It is a song contest, point of it to judge the songs and vote for them. If only people who can write/sing would vote that would be full on jury voting. But we as fans are also voting so we will judge the song and criticize them.

Quality is quite low this year. In a normal year this song would be a borderline qualifier, this year it might be in my top 10.
