They topped the televote at Eurovision 2015 in Austria, helping cement Italy’s place as a Eurovision giant that gets things done by doing it the Italian way.

And now Il Volo have rightly booked their spot as an interval act during Semi-Final 2 of Eurovision 2022.

Il Volo — that’s baritone Gianluca Ginoble, and tenors Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto — will join a star-studded semi. As we previously reported, hosts Laura Pausini and MIKA will also duet with one another during an interval in SF2

During the summer of 2016, we caught up with the guys of Il Volo in London.

Naturally we had to talk about Eurovision and the fact they won the televote, but didn’t take home the trophy, with their song “Grande Amore”.

“To win the televote is the most important thing,” Piero told me. “The televote are the people who buy the album and come to your shows.”

Should the rules be changed then?

“I think Eurovision should be 80% televote and 20% the rest,” Piero says. “I think the one who has to win is the one who people like.”

Il Volo’s appearance comes as their careers continue to blossom.

As reported on the Eurovision web site run by the European Broadcasting Union, the trio have a lot coming up in the months ahead.

“This Autumn sees the worldwide release of the collection 10 Years, which contains the best of Il Volo’s repertoire, from “O Sole Mio” to My Way and, of course, Grande Amore! Their latest album Il Volo Sings Morricone (2021) is an extraordinary journey into the art of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, with the support of Andrea Morricone and the whole family.”

“After the Contest, they’ll resume a world tour that will start in Barcelona and will see them starring in the most prestigious European locations throughout the summer and then from September they’ll be in Canada and North America.”

Il Volo may not have won Eurovision 2015, but they are winners in our hearts indeed. They revived opera.

It’s great to see Il Volo perform as the interval act of semi-final 2. They’re the younger version of I Tre Tenori (that is Pavarotti, Carreras, and Domingo), and I wouldn’t mind seeing them perform “Grande amore” or maybe even an opera classic like “Nessun dorma”, “O sole mio”, or “O fortuna”.

I hope Italian broadcaster gets creative and original and have them singing a medley of Raffaella Carra’s songs.

Italy….What have you done? Such a beautiful song! I already said that They Netherlands is my personal winner, but I wouldn’t mind if Bella Italia should win it again!

How nice of Italy to invite the real winners of 2015 and one of the highest televoting entries in history. I guess Mans will stay home this May. Phew

I understand that people are still salty with the defeat of Il Volo in 2015 but calling them the real winners won’t give them back the trophy. The real winner by the rules is still Måns and he deserved it as much as Il Volo.

Il Volo were the rightful winners in 2015. This was one of the biggest robberies in the last 10 years. And it made no sense. The public overwhelmingly voted for them. You would think they would be a typical jury winner too, but somehow weirdly that didn’t happen.

it’s because the juries were told for potential hits and radio-friendly songs… i guess they expected heroes to be bigger than it was, instead it only went gold in 2 countries outside of sweden and left the charts pretty fast.

Wikipedia provides sources it went gold in Austria, Denmark, Norway and Poland. And Platinum in Spain.
On Spotify it has 138 million streams, whereas Grande Amore has 33 million.

They should have won in 2015! Great news!

BTW, Michael from Israel will perform in the Eurovision Song Contest as planned! An official announcement has been made today!

Sorry this is unrelated but I just wanted to write that the General Security Agency have found a solution to Israel’s security problem and Michael Ben David will travel to Torino.
I.M very pleased! Even if we won’t qualify MBD deserves a proper ESC experience and he will indeed be getting one!

Hooray, I am glad a solution has been found. Regardless of where Israel places this year, at least MBD will have his chance to perform live.

With all the attention Mans gets for his contest win, it should be remembered that these chaps got a higher score in the televote 😉

these chaps have a career outside of eurovision, unlike the heroes singer who apart from a couple of shirtless magazine shoots has only made headlines for appearing at eurovision-related events to sing his eurovision song
