The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 37 competing songs in Eurovision 2025. Next we review Spain, who have chosen Melody with “ESA DIVA”.

Are we ready to unleash our own inner divas? Read on to find out!

Melody – “ESA DIVA” (Spain Eurovision 2025)

Review: Melody – “ESA DIVA”

Pablo: Melody is one of the top performers of the year, and “ESA DIVA” lives up to her expectations. This fresher, stripped-back angle compliments her imposing stage presence without smothering the listener nor compromising who she is as a performer. She sells decadence and schmaltz in a way everyone can enjoy guiltlessly, making grandeur and confidence inclusive to all. If they channel her talents and technicality with the right staging, this can become a showstopping package everyone simply must witness and reward.

     Score: 9

Deban: Melody’s resumé is impressive. With a career spanning 25 years, she is no stranger to topping charts at home and abroad. Through live performance, she has elevated her catalogue of crowd-pleasing hits. However, based on her recent showcase at Benidorm Fest, “ESA DIVA” appears to expose her failings. She is shouty in parts, out of breath at times, and loses much of her telegenic charm. Yes, its revamp gives a more international sound. Still, its very essence requires her to sing, dance, model and perform at professional level in every frame and at the same time. Had there been a better division of labour, Melody would’ve scored much higher.

     Score: 6.5

Scarlett: “ESA DIVA” is a solid pop song with an admirable message, even if the song is not particularly musically interesting. The strongest element of the song are its lyrics, which go beyond self-empowerment; Melody interestingly turns the diva concept on its head and invites everyone to become one (“A diva is simple, like a mere mortal”). Brava for subverting expectations.

     Score: 4

Ruxandra: I love the message of the song. I think it’s empowering, and Melody performs it really well. While it might not be the most original song in terms of sound, it’s well-structured, knows how to highlight her voice, and the transitions between parts are smooth. However, the live performance was, for me, absolutely chaotic. It felt like a bingo card of Eurovision elements: a high dress, a fall, an outfit change on stage, a throne, Slavko’s hair helicopter, dance… It was just too much, and Melody seemed to be running from one thing to another.

     Score: 8

This one is way better than last year’s. Not quite as good as Chanel’s “SloMo”, but good enough to possibly finish top-10.

ITALY – Italian entries have often been my top 10, as winning Sanremo, or even being in top 5 there, marks a level of quality and competitivness that goes a long way at Eurovision. Lucio Corsi came second at Sanremo, and brough his sentimental rocky ballad to Basel. While this song is, of course, not bad by any means, I feel like it lacks a standard impact of its predecessors. It’s a pleasant entry with a pretty, even if not necessarily immedate melody. It lacks a climax of a pop-rock hit, but it’s also a bit too standard for having… Read more »

SPAIN – Every year ESC needs at least one ”queen bop”, and this year, it’s up to Spain’s Melody to take that mantle. It really leans into the benchmarks of an ”OGAE-friendly song”, including having a strong woman on stage, self-empowerment lyrics and an elaborated dance break. It stops short from calling itself ”DaqueeNation” and literally saying she’s her to ”slay”. Melody being able to hit high notes while dancing so well is impressive. She really oozes the diva personality, and is the perfect person to deliver this message. I also love how the lyrics don’t talk about self-empowerment in… Read more »

Melody is a great performer and singer, but the song itself, the lyrics and particularly all the hype from RTVE is getting out of control to the point that many would claim that instead of “poderosa” she’s just being “una pesá”. Too much promotion, probably one of the most overhyped songs of all time.

For the record, I don’t think it’s as bad as the Eurofandom says it is. It’s certainly a better effort than last year.

At the same time, though, I think Spanish fans are WAY too optimistic about Melody’s chances. The diva-type song has been done a LOT lately, and “Esa diva” doesn’t exactly break new ground in that regard.

Overall, it’s a safe pick – but being safe is not guaranteed to be successful. I hope for the best, but I’m skeptical she can crack the top-10, let alone win.

Spain is my number 5. This is absolutely brilliant. I really love “Esa Diva”, thank you so much to Melody and Alberto Fuentes Lorite for writing it. E-flat minor is a key of complex emotions, as it is sombre, dark and of-the-funeral, but it’s also nostalgic because of its association with film scores, epic classical works and jazz. When set to Spanish guitar runs and a nostalgic dance beat, this key really frames the song perfectly. The song “Esa Diva” is coming from a lifetime of experience at being a performer, and I completely identify with it. A true diva… Read more »

Why is that some Eurovision fans always compare anything Latin to JLO?? Maybe it is time for you to expand your musical boundaries and get to know any other latin(ish) singer so that your comparisons are a Little bit more diverse.

Yes, but. In this case the similarities go obviously beyond inspiration. And that’s exactly the problem.

In any case “similarities” to Thalía or Gloria Trevi NOT JLO but since your musical knowledge is limited you need to compare anything that might sound remotely Latin to you to the only Latin (ish) singer you know.

Uuh, wow, such a sassy one. Calm down, babe. It doesn’t make the song itself any better. Thanks for the enlightenment.

This getting a 7.17/10 is pure insanity. This is a 4/10 that has been inflated cuz everyone is scared of the spanish fans that adore Melody and cant hear that this songs melody is lackluster. Bottom 10 no doubt about that.

33rd place: Spain: Esa Diva is an old-fashioned, mainstream Latin dance bop with also some mainstream pop elements. Such a combination seems to be destined for a low result in May. And also stands fully out of my personal preferences as I don’t remember having listened to this song more than 1 or 2 times. After the ethnic epicness of Blanca and the sheer fun of Nebulossa, I am disappointed in Spain this year

The worst and least interesting song of this ESC season. It screams “cheap” in every way possible. She tries so hard to express anything and eventually serving… nothing. This is something that women repeats every Eurovision – silver fit, dance break, old-school vibe when they have no charisma or talent.

I don’t even dislike it but I cannot see this escaping the bottom 5. Eurovision points are mostly done with that kind of entry.

What a voice! But also, what a dated song and a melody that we’ve heard a million times before. A more modern production during first 2/3 of the song would’ve elevated it.

Curious as to what score this would have gotten before the revamp because I really think they knocked it out of the park with that. I’m not sure it’ll stand out enough to get high up the scoreboard but I think it’s more likely to come 20th than 25th now, which counts, I guess.

Suffers from the Reiley effect, as do many of this year’s entries. Meaning I love the studio version, but wonder if it can be matched on stage with live vocals.

These high scores are really not in line with the jury-comments. I feel like people are rating her high because of a positive message and her nice personality. While ignoring the fact that this is probably the most dated song from Spain in many years. Not to mention the chaos on stage. This literally screams bottom 5.

26. Spain – Melody – Esa Diva – 6/10 – there is a classy EDM production trying to reveal itself here, but it is overpowered by some unnecessary musical flourishes and the vocal performance has a little too much aggression for my taste. The breakdown doesn’t work for me. Sadly, this entry had the potential to be so much more. It is still ok and I will enjoy its flag waving quality.

I am Spanish and I don’t love Esa diva, but come on, Scarlett, The strongest element of the song are its lyrics? I actually think that the weakest is the lyrics, “she is free singing, like a fish in the sea”. The best, for me, is Melody, her voice and charisma. I also trust in the changes that are going to be done in the staging, so far, the changes in the song have been positive (I like the revamp much more than the original). I wish her very good luck, she deserves a good position, even if the song… Read more »

Spain – Over the past couple of years I’ve given Spain a lot of love, but this year it’s my least favourite ‘Big 5’ entry, and it’s not even close. I know some people didn’t like the original, but I find the revamp to be a bit… sterile? Melody’s a really great performer, but unfortunately that’s about it for me. 4.5/10
