Norway at Eurovision 2025: Kyle Alessandro with “Lighter”
Kyle is the youngest contestant in this year’s Eurovision, at just 19 years old. The son of a Norwegian mother and a Spanish father, he was born in Levanger and raised in Steinkjer and Trondheim.
At just 10 years old, Kyle Alessandro competed in Norske Talenter, the Norwegian version of Got Talent, and has since appeared in several televised shows, including Allsang på Grensen.
This year’s participation in MGP was not his first attempt to reach Eurovision. In 2023, he competed as part of the group Umami Tsunami, who won the hearts of Eurovision fans with their song “Geronimo,” despite finishing in last place in the competition.
What do the “Lighter” lyrics mean?
Kyle’s song is about finding the strength within yourself, breaking free from others’ influence, and igniting your own fire. The lyrics make it clear that when you’ve been deceived, walking away from a toxic relationship is essential.
Fire symbolises both transformation and the inner light that no one should be allowed to dim or use to hold you back. When trapped in, or overly dependent on, a toxic relationship, that fire is indeed weakened. The partner is described as “dressed in ice” with a heart “as dark as the night,” yet for a long time, he was unable to walk away:
I really think I bought your lies, did anything to keep you mine
Yet, after losing himself, he reaches a moment of realisation—finding himself again after a long journey of self-discovery and mustering the courage to break free:
Somewhere along the way I lost my mind
I had to walk a hundred thousand miles
I’m not afraid to set it all on fire
The key message in the lyrics is that, even if you feel like you always need someone to love you, your worth does not depend on others. The song is an encouragement to embrace self-love and confidence, focusing on your own journey and doing what makes you happy. Instead of seeking validation from others, Kyle chooses self-strength and motivation:
Nothing can burn me now
I’ll be my own lighter
I feel a spark inside me
I don’t need saving
(…)
I’m tired of a million tries to fight, the signs
And when everybody tried to tell me
I should’ve known that it was time to break free
Your reigns that kept me at your mercy
I’ll burn them to the ground

Golden girl dressed in ice
A heart as dark as night
You got me to dim my light, no more
I really think I bought your lies
Did anything to keep you mine
You kept me hooked on your line, no more
Somewhere along the way I lost my mind
I had to walk a hundred thousand miles
I’m not afraid to set it all on fire
I won’t fall again
I’ll be my own lighter
Nothing can burn me now
I’ll be my own lighter
I feel a spark inside me
I don’t need saving
No way, no way
‘Cause I’m my own
I’m my own lighter
I’m tired of a million tries to fight, the signs
And when everybody tried to tell me
I should’ve known that it was time to break free
Your reigns that kept me at your mercy
I’ll burn them to the ground
No more, no more
Ignite the fire
Somewhere along the way I lost my mind
I had to walk a hundred thousand miles
I’m not afraid to set it all on fire
I won’t fall again
I’ll be my own lighter
Nothing can burn me now
I’ll be my own lighter
I feel a spark inside me
I don’t need saving
No way, no way
‘Cause I’m my own
I’m my own lighter
Silence fills the room
And I’ve taken off my jewels
I wish none of this was true
But there’s a fire growing too
Nothing can burn me now
I’ll be my own lighter
I feel a spark inside me
I don’t need saving
No way, no way
‘Cauѕe I’m my own
I’m my own lighter
Nothing cаn burn me down
I’m my own
I’m my own lighter
