As the dust settles on the 63rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, couples, friends and families from Channel 4’s Gogglebox watched and gave their witty opinions on Friday night’s programme.
Having previously covered the 2014 and 2016 contests, it was the first series of Gogglebox since Leon Bernicoff passed away in December last year. Like many of you, we missed his humour and insight.
On SuRie’s stage invasion:
“There was high drama on the world’s biggest singing competition on BBC One,” said narrator Craig Cash during the intro.
Linda from the Gibley family:
Oh my god we’ve been sabbatarged #Eurovision #stageinvader #Gogglebox

As the Grand Final gets underway:
“We haven’t watched it since the ’70s, have we?”, Mary said before Giles remembered Conchita Wurst in 2014.
Conchita Wurst? That’s the one that looks like Russell Brand. @ConchitaWurst @rustyrockets #Eurovision #Gogglebox

On Israel’s Netta Barzilai:
Several members of the Gogglebox cast were left bemused as Netta begins her performance, followed by the now famous chicken dance. “What the hell is this?”, asked Welshman Dave whilst Ellie from Leeds was just as confused, “Has she actually just clucked like a chicken?”
Giles from Wiltshire:
This is music to annoy your parents #ISR #Eurovision #Gogglebox

On Netta’s looper:
It’s not often you’d see a looper on stage and Andrew from the Michael family thought it was a keyboard. Stephen from Brighton compared it to a touch screen till used for ordering fast food.

On the lyrics of “Toy”:
After Israel finished their performance, Mary searched for the lyrics of “Toy” before reading out the first verse and chorus. This left Giles wondering what a Pikachu was. Neither Giles nor Mary knew the song was inspired by the #MeToo movement.

They’ve simply picked clips which re-inforce the general British impression of the contest. Yawn.

why would anyone watch a tv show of old boring people watching TV
Well our good old Brits, of course. Probably the most british thing – being boring and pretentious,
Gogglebox: “Looks like she’s ordering fast food.” Yep, and it’s being delivered to Salvador Sobral. 🙂
“Hot Chicken! So fresh it’s still cluckin’ for ya!”
What’s a Pikachu? Wow someone’s been living under a rock for 23 years
Well that’s explains why Israel isn’t in the UK’s televoting Top 3. I wish they would react to Eleni’s performance, though.
Israel recived a total of 17 points from the uk televote and juries combined… thats 9 more points then what cyprus got from them… and your nickname is just stupid and political…
Didn’t Cyprus get 12 points from British jury?
No, Austria did…Cyprus didn’t get anything.
Then how come Netta did better than even SuRie at the UK charts?
