One month ago Stefania was confirmed as Greece’s act for Eurovision 2020 with the song “SUPERG!RL”. Now her song for Rotterdam has been released.
The song was premiered on the ERT television show Eurovision Countdown this afternoon. The “SUPERG!RL” video was given a first play on the channel, giving fans a first look at what Stefania will be bringing with her Eurovision entry.
The song has a powerful message. The broadcaster says it’s about encouraging “teenagers to believe in themselves and go after their dreams. It narrates Stefania’s own story since, as a young woman she has had to find the power to combine her obligations as a student with her dream of singing.”
Stefania -“SUPERG!RL” (Greece Eurovision 2020)
Song composer Dimitris Kontopoulos talked about the challenge of finding the right song for Stefania. He said, “To be honest it was difficult to find the right song for her, since we wanted the track to fit both her age and personality.”
Kontoupolos also gave a shout-out to his musical collaborators, saying, “It is the first time I collaborate for Eurovision with Arcade, a very talented young group of songwriters and producers from Greece, while it’s always an honour working with Sharon Vaughn, a great lyricist and woman.”
The concept behind the “SUPERG!RL” music video
The “SUPERG!RL” music video was helmed by Greek director Kostas Karydas. It was shot in four different locations around Athens.
Karydas explained the ideas behind the video. He said, “We came up with a story with surrealistic elements. We followed a young woman who finds the strength to embrace her special abilities in a society that perceives her as an outcast. It is a journey to explore her inner strength.”
He also praised Stefania for her professionalism and ability to draw on her acting skills to bring the video concept to life.
What do you think of “SUPERG!RL”? What sort of staging concept should Stefania bring to Eurovision 2020? Tell us your thoughts below!
Will sail into the final and with good staging it can even reach top 10. Especially in this weak, full of ballads year
I will be stanning!
Bad song..
The dutch accent is strong in this one
Not bad, but I feel like 2004 me (15) would have liked more than 2020 me (31). Entries from artist on the youngest artist 16-18 can be problematic, because if they are given a song written with a more adult singer in mind, it ends up being tacky and cringy (like Isaiah or Bishara in past year’s Mello) while if they go for something whimsy and fluffy, it can end up looking more like a JESC entry than an adult one. But I think that with Stefania, they actually reached quite a good balance.
Boring song. It’s a generic pop song with some traditional folk sounds to try to make it sound ethnic. There is nothing fresh about it and the word “supergirl” pops up way too many times.
On the plus side, the song is bearable as the 3 minutes pass by quickly.
Arcade was a boring ballad
I need her to levitate over the audience in the arena, splashing them with water. 😀
As a Greek fan I am quite underwhelmed by this song. It sounds very manufactured. A great song isn’t a recipe or a formula, getting a supposedly great songwriter and a pop star matching them together, it sounds like it’s trying too hard. Greece needs to take more risks. Alcohol is Free was the last risk Greece took and their last decent song.
+Better Love
Alohol is free, Oopa and Rise Up
After hearing all the songs released so far, this Greek song is actually rather good by comparison (despite some cringeworthy lyrics).
Again, if she can pull-off a good live performance, it may actually break into the top 10. However, this studio version is so over-produced, I’m skeptical about her live vocals. We shall see ….
Superg!rl is like hybrid of Oniro mou (Greece 2018) and superhero (Poland JESC 2019).
I don’t really know what to say. It’s not my cup of tea, repetitive music which gets annoying after few seconds and I see her maximum in the league of Michela Pace.
Love it very different and the ethnic riff is very good, Should do well. Love the video too.
Oh wow, i really love this! Modern meets traditional. And Stefania looks so fresh. I can see this doing a top 10 in the final already! Good luck!!
Spain will love this like all the greek entries loveeee to youuuu
Everyone will be dancing to this in May
I dont think its only for teens, I am not a teen and I really enjoy it
So now my favourites are: Greece, Lithuania, Iceland, Norway, Romania, Germany and Australia. The rest are all very weak
Not a winner by any means and their two more recent entries were certainly more sophisticated but this is miles better than what Demy got and Stefania sounds like she can sell this live.
It’s looking like we will have some uptempo songs now but they they’ll all be in the second semi, while hype first will be ballad heavy.
It’s what you expected from the announcement: A teen girl song aimed at teen girls! On that premise it’s actually not bad. A nice pleasant up-tempo song. But I don’t think Greece will return to top 10 with this.
if Fokas managed to take Moldova 2018 into the top 10, he can certainly take this
People said the same for fuego and then we saw what happened.
OK another joke entry for 12 years old girls, one less threat for Russia. Thank you Greece.
This is the most chauvinisic comment i’ve seen in a long time.
Your little big sucks a lot. Their music is super trash for kids under 8 years old
The first half of the second semi is weaker than anything ive ever seen. Iceland and Serbia will sail through to the final
LOL Serbia is awful, the cheapest song of the year. Juries will destroy it.
Even if that happens, I think Serbia could be top 5 in the televote in the semifinal so they would make it through anyway
It could be like Eleni X 3
Exactly the kind of song I was expecting – a cute and charming banger meant for a teen girl to sing. It’s uplifting and has a really nice video attached to it as well. It does indeed sound a bit JESC-ish, but then again, Stefania is barely out of that life phase herself, so it feels natural.
Most logical comment on here
Thanks. 🙂
I am loving this!
Adorable and so catchy
Fokas Evaggelinos will make something great for her I am sure, the song has great staging potential
And she’s so cuteee ah
Dance breaks will be fire on stage ( if they stage it right )
I m having this on repeaat this is a bop
Best uptempo weve had so far, I love Germany too but I think that guy isnt charismatic enough.
With all the information we had before this song was released, I think this is the exact song we expected.
It’s fine. Probably a safe qualifier but not much beyond that.
I actually rather like this alot!!! Good luck to her and Greece at Rotterdam.
I mostly hate the use of ! instead of the letter i
Other than that? I love this song 🙂
I really thought it was gonna be some cheesy teen pop song
When will we finally hear some fast food musics we’re waiting for??
There’s a quote from Terry Wogan from one of his last contests where he laughs and says “I don’t thing Country X cares anymore”. That’s the way I feel about Greece.
It’s true actually. I believe last time greeks were excited about Eurovision was 2008 maybe 2009 (I am from Greece)
This was long expected Tibor, after Greece experimenting with their entries for many years and failing every single time. Yet, this is not such a safe choice because the composition takes a step forward from the typical ethnopop Greek songs of 2000s and early 2010s, such as ‘Secret Combination’ or ‘Aphrodisiac’, which I personally dislike strongly.
PS. As a Greek I’m only proud of Katerine Duska, since there were many things that went wrong in 2018, but that’s another discussion.
The issue with Greek entries in Eurovision is that the national broadcaster (ERT) is always tightly controlled by the government, so when people in charge of the process of selecting the songs change this has a significant impact on the actual selection. The previous leftist government in Greece has been unsuccessfully experimenting with Eurovision since 2016, continuously changing the selection process and criteria – Argo in 2016 was a personal selection of the then ERT chairman, and so on. The government changed last year, so the people changed again, and they expectedly opted for more conventional entries for Greece, following… Read more »
Well, let’s not turn this into a political conversation -although politics had always an impact on Greek selections for Eurovision- but don’t expect that the current conservative government would easily opt for anything but mainstream, conventional pop/ethno. Just look at the Greek entries from 2005-2009 and 2012-2015. 😉
This grows on you. It’s nowhere near as bad as some of the comments here say.
It will need a very strong stage performance. It’s not “City Lights” (which could do well with a dull stage performance), but Stefania with a team of dancers could pull it off provided the vocals are strong.
Also, I hope it’s not all women up there on the stage. Greece tried that last year, and it came across as TOO “girl power.” She should go with half-naked men like Demy, or maybe a combo of men & women dancers.
OK, although I’m not personally a fan of that type of music, this is actually much better than I expected. The ethno-flavoured hook in the chorus is very memorable, while the whole composition sounds quite fresh and relevant. Stefania also seems very nice and relatable, which is always important when it comes to televoting. This also doesn’t sound very similar to previous songs by Kontopoulos -which is a good thing- and this is obviously due to the involvement of the Arcade group which has been very succesful in the last few years in Greece. Overall I’m quite pleased with Greece’s… Read more »
Greece 5/10 – too much “Supergirl”
I figured out who she reminds me of…Rory Gilmore!
True! 🙂
whoa I didn’t even see that until u said it
I like it. The traditional Greek vibe makes it unique. Compared to others it will stand out.
Giiiirlll!!!
When Justin Timberlake meets Kalomira.
It’s giving me the same vibe as Kalomira. A song sung by a flapper (teenage girl) for a flapper audience. Basically, nothing’s wrong with that. But I do question if 12 years after Kalomira this can still do the trick.
Also, the ethnic notes throughout the song sound vaguely like What Comes Around… Goes Around from Justin Timberlake. Not too much, but a little bit similar.
Greece can qualify for the final.
I don’t like it,
thank you, next
Eek… cringeworthy lyrics and fairly mediocre childish and generic music with a rather unpleasant drop. The chorus is infectiously catchy though, and by the end I didn’t hate it quite as much as I probably should. This could’ve been a solid, credible JESC entry but for ESC it just doesn’t seem quite right. That said, in such a weak year, I do expect it to qualify given they are able to provide a successful stage show.
Perhaps I didn’t like this quite as much as I wanted to, what with it being Greece and all, and the videos fun, and she’s very pretty, but apart from the chorus and Greek flavoured backing, it’s a bit forgettable. However, there is huge potential for a big show, with Stefania flying across the stage, so fingers crossed.
Greece can win with this great song!
For some folks who might not know, Greece and Turkey are in war at the moment in their northern borders, thats why this bot is writing so many hate comments. Ignore the politics, we are here for the music.
Junior ESC? I think they are a little early lol
Um…So repetitive and kind of dated. And I do feel like this year can compete 2017 for my weakest Eurovision year for the last 10 years.
Its a banger and I love it. its only downfall is the music video its too childish for me and most of people…
We can’t expect anything groundbreaking coming from Kontopoulos, but my problem here is more about the lyrics. They have that “older men writing for young girls” vibe, not in a creepy way, but in a way it doesn’t sound sincere. The video makes clear the audience they’re targeting and this can work (my 14 year old self would love it). The track itself is enjoyable, I can notice the effort to suit Stefania’s voice and age. I also like the ethnic touch, but it could have more variation. Too JESC for ESC? We’ll see in May.
I totally agree with your words.
I couldn’t agree more with you. A banger among teenagers (sometimes I think ESC wants to focus too much on people under 18, but they forget people of all ages enjoy this contest). Anyway, I prefer more authentic entries. I believe more in Australia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Iceland.
More authenticity, less Kantoupoulos/G:Son!!!
Big surprise – I like the etnic influence. Well done. Greece !
I am Greek and I don’t like the song at all…. And this year is very weak unfortunately. Stefania is beautiful and has a good voice though so I guess the song is to blame!
No. Only 4 or 5 entries are saving the day so far.
