United Kingdom at Eurovision 2023: Mae Muller with “I Wrote a Song”

Mae Muller is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from London. Her signature feel-good pop sound is inspired by the likes of Gwen Stefani, The Chicks and Lily Allen.

She first found fame in 2019 when her song “Better Days” — a collaboration with Swedish group Neiked and American rapper Polo G — charted in the UK top 40 and reached the US top 30. She went on to perform the track on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show. Elsewhere, she supported girlband Little Mix on their UK tour.

Now, she’s taking on a new challenge as the UK’s hope for the Eurovision Song Contest. Mae said: “This is such a level up from anything I’ve ever done”.

What do the “I Wrote A Song” lyrics mean?

Mae co-wrote “I Wrote A Song” alongside Brit-nominated songwriter Lewis Thompson and Karen Poole. The 25-year-old Londoner describes the song as an empowering pop anthem about taking the high road.

Featuring a tasty summertime hook, polished production and a spoken-word bridge showcasing Mae’s North London origins, “I Wrote A Song” brings contemporary Britpop to the Eurovision lineup.

On TikTok, Mae wrote: “This song is for the girlies that went through heartache, hurt or pain and came out of the other side, who persevered and came out stronger, who took the high road and chose to love themselves.”

With lyrics like “I was ready for a sentence”, Mae tells her ex how she really feels — ready to get revenge at the risk of a criminal record. But instead, she puts her emotions into words. After writing her anger down in verse, she’s ready to party with her girlfriends: “I feel much better now, me and my girls are out”.

Mae Muller — “I Wrote A Song” lyrics (UK Eurovision 2023)

When you said you were leaving
To work on your mental health
You didn’t mention the cheating, yeah
You kept that one to yourself

I got so mad was gonna
Cuss you out outside your house
For everyone to see
Wanted to trash your Benz
Tell all your friends
How cruel you were to me (to me, to me)

Instead I wrote a song
‘Bout how you did me wrong
I could’ve cried at home
And spent the night alone
Instead I wrote a song
I feel much better now
Mе and my girls are out
And we all sing along
Instead I wrotе a song

Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Instead I wrote a song
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Instead I wrote a song

Kept my cool and composure
My mother would be so proud
I was ready for a sentence, baby
Instead, I wrote it all down

Oh, I was gonna
Cuss you out outside your house
For everyone to see
Wanted to trash your Benz
Tell all your friends
How cruel you were to me (to me, to me)

Instead I wrote a song
‘Bout how you did me wrong
I could’ve cried at home
And spent the night alone
Instead I wrote a song
I feel much better now
Me and my girls are out
And we all sing along
Instead I wrote a song

Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Instead I wrote a song
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Da-da-da-da-da-da-dai
Instead I wrote a song

Look into my eyes
She’s feeling good, she feels alive
So don’t you call my phone tonight, tonight, tonight

No lie, got a kick
Telling the world just what you did
I’m better now I’ve burned the bridge
Raising the glass taking a sip

Let’s celebrate, dance it away
I thought my heart would break

Instead I wrote a song
‘Bout how you did me wrong
I could’ve cried at home
And spent the night alone
Instead I wrote a song
I feel much better now
Me and my girls are out
And we all sing along
Instead I wrote a song

The thing about this song is that it definitely is a modern top 40 UK singles chart track, but I can’t Shake the feeling that UK missed an oportunity to actually pick a song/artist that could bring them victory on a homeground. Anyway, it’s still so much better than what UK usually picks and I applaud their effort.

Good honest lyrics here. What’s funny is I honestly thought Mae was singing “da-da-DIE” when I first heard the track. I also love how our UK song is from a women who is “burning her bridges,” because it somehow manages to be honestly reflective of our country’s relationship with Europe in other ways. Yes I know, we are “united by music”, but… you know what I mean.

I’m from the UK and can’t believe the hype on this song. It’s catchy but so is the flu. It’s just so typical of the soulless tripe that dominates the UK singles chart. I don’t hate the song I just can’t believe the hypocrisy of all the comments when people wanted Birdy or other singers….. anyone apart from Mae. Now she’s been chosen it’s all good and the garden is blooming again. What two faced idiots some people are. This is not a great song and hopefully we get a strong backing track because she’s very inconsistent singing live.

I find the lyrics a bit stupid to be honest. If taken literally she goes through heartbreak but instead of doing the things she sings about, she instead just writes a song to let off steam instead. …Okay, but it’s kinda dumb how she has the attitude as *if* she still did those things anyway. It’s like, look how much of a badass I am by saying these things and I’mma trash your Benz, but I’m not actually doing it because it’s wrong so I’mma just do something countless musicians do. It’s missing the mark quite a bit for me

She’s venting her anger through music, not car-wrecking. It’s a release, it’s self-help therapy. Also a way of saying this person is not worth the trouble.

This song has SO MUCH staging potential! I can imagine at the ‘burning bridges’ part of the song we really get some pyro! There’s lots of potential to be wowed here!

I have just bought this song on Amazon and the spoken part is nowhere to be found. Just the ‘Let’s celebrate, dance it away…’ and the last chorus.

To me “Instead I wrote a song” sounds self deprecating rather than empowering. In a good way, like it’s important to be able to laugh at oneself. It’s ok to be passive-aggressive sometimes.
Not saying it has to be one or the other.

This is a good pop song in a poor year compared to entires from other nations, with a few exceptions, this year but that said the last few days with Austria Israel and UK the bar is raised for commercial pop. I hope like Gina G in 1996 this goes on to be a massive hit worldwide regardless of the outcome on 13 May.

I really like this! It’s definitely not a winner but I think it will be in the top 10 as it’s a polished entry and very current. It’s already no 1 on iTunes in the Uk today so I think this will be a big hit this year. She has a great energy too so I think regardless of the result this year we can still be proud of our entry and representative again.

Karen Poole wrote “Wow”, with Kylie Minogue. I love that song. Her father was in the business too, it was him who knocked “She Loves You” by The Beatles off the UK No.1 spot in 1963, sixty years ago. There’s a vague Liverpool connection for you.
