Today the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals — just had to celebrate. That’s because the final of Cyprus’ Eurovision Song Project takes place on Sunday, February 1. So we stripped down to our boardshorts and worshiped the sun on the Cypriot coastline. Then we got dressed to review Giannis Karagiannis‘ ballad “One Thing I Should Have Done”. Was it touching? Or just touchy? Read on to find out…
“One Thing I Should Have Done” reviews
Deban: This song has all the elements, but they need to be mixed differently. Giannis Karagiannis’s understated attitude works for me. I am fixated on his lyrics, and I am longing to hear the strain, pain and regret in his message. This is a really powerful song. I’m pleased that there is a contestant out there who is passionate about pitching a different point of view to the contest. Yes, he should have been there for me, he tells me. He should probably look straight into my eyes to tell me that. However, at this point, all is forgiven.
Score: 8.5/10
Robyn: This song has a boring familiarity. It reminds me of the kind of easy listening love songs that artists like Norah Jones released in the ’00s. It’s not a very engaging song and Giannis isn’t a particularly charismatic performer. It’s a bit blah.
Score: 4/10
William: One thing you should have done? Oh, Giannis: I can name about 20. Choose a more dynamic song that shows off your vocals. Sing something that reminds me you have a pulse. Ditch the elevator music. But keep the glasses. You look rul cute. I’m voting on your potential, not on the song itself.
Score: 6/10
Sami: I’m not really feeling this. The guitar is way too loud, at least in the live video, and his voice doesn’t really stand out. The lyrics sound nice, but everything else in the song needs revamping. There’s some potential, but I wouldn’t send it to Vienna in this shape.
Score: 4/10
Kristín: This is a sweet song, and I like this Roman Lob/ByeAlex thing that Giannis has going on. The song kinda reminds me of “More Than Words” by Extreme, just in a subtler way. All in all, I like Giannis and I like this song. For me, it has somewhat of a soothing effect and leaves me in a feelgood and tender mood.
Score: 8/10
Judit: Tom Dice with ByeAlex’s glasses and a lovely Disney song. I like it. Somehow it’s magical and I feel like he is singing to me. Stole my heart.
Score: 9/10
Patrick: This is song is beautiful, no doubt! You dream while listening to it and that’s a good sign. Giannis can sing really well, but the lyrics are cliché and the melody is a bit too slow. I miss a musical climax. It could work when they remaster it into a ‘Gravity’ a la Zlata Ognevich. All in all it’s beautiful!
Score: 6/10
Billy: Giannis Karagiannis is a very talented singer, who is capable of performing this diffictult song well. The lyrics are strong, and I think it’s important that he conveys the emotions to the audience. However, this needs a different musical direction, ecpecially in those parts without any music. It starts very promising, but ultimately lets me down.
Score: 7/10
Wiwi Jury Verdict: 6.56/10
That woman 2 mins in looked bored as hell
It’s very sincere. It might be too unconventional for Eurovision but people who don’t like those type of cheesy Euro songs would actually dig this.
I’m sorry but to me he reminds me just a little bit of Will Savage from the british soap Hollyoaks. Google him and tell me if you agree.
Also he should have used a whitening toothpaste.
One think he should have done is never try to represent Cyprous singing this song or just singing this song.
