Tonight the Netherlands chose their representive through Junior Songfestival, their annual Junior Eurovision preselection. After all candidates sang, the juries and the televoters chose  Shalisa with her song “Million Lights” — and in a landslide! She secured the maximum amount of points — 36 — after bagging douze points from the kids’ jury (K), adult jury (A) and the televoters (T), just like last year’s winner Julia. Even before the voting was closed one judge remarked: “It would be weird if Shalisa doesn’t win tonight.” He wasn’t wrong.

Junior Songfestival Results

1. Shalisa – 36 points (12 (K), 12 (A), 12 (T))
2. 4LIFE – 28 points(10 (K), 8 (A), 10 (T))
3. Nohr – 27 points (9 (K), 10 (A), 8 (T))
4. Guusje 24 points (8 (K), 7 (A), 9 (T))
5. Myrthe 23 points (7 (K), 9 (A), 7 (T))

Performances

Nohr – “Ik Ben Mezelf”

Myrthe – “Kinderen Van De Zon”

Guusje – “Talk About Love”

Shalisa – “Million Lights” (WINNER)

4LIFE – “You Will Know My Name”

Shalisa did very well and was very solid, only the songs from Nohr and 4Life I find much more original and catchy. Nevertheless, good luck Shalisa!

Not feeling it.

Seems like every country’s (bad) song choice makes Albania rank higher.

She has a good voice and the song Is decent I just find it very samey. It’s not original or special. A talented girl but needs a better song, I feel. This is the MakeMakes of JESC, and look how that ended… I hope she does well, I’m just not sure if children over Europe would vote for it. Then again, she scored 12 from the kids jury. Good luck, Shalisa!

This years JESC seems to be (Like Eurovision this year) full of ballads…I love the song from the Netherlands last year so much because it was catchy, good performance and a very good voice 🙂 My Top is at the moment: 1.Albania (The audio is very bad but it sounds catchy and I really like her voice) 2.Belarus (The new version is much better I think, his voice is amazing and it’s a good ballad) 3.The Netherlands (Very good voice but the song is a typical JESC ballad) 4.Ukraine (Same as number 3) 5.Russia (Don’t like the voice or the… Read more »

This years JESC is set to be really boring – I don’t really like this one, it’s OK and I really can’t see this (or any of the current acts for that matter) winning in Sofia. My top 5: 1: Ukraine – Anna is a good vocalist and her song has the most promise for me. 2: Belarus – His song is just another ballad but he works the screen really well and knows how to perform 3: Netherlands – This may grow on me but I can’t put it any higher 4: Albania – Same as Above – Maybe… Read more »

I’m Dutch, hoped for Guusje to win 🙁
I find Shalina’s act to average and typical.

@Mario – totally agree with you about Guusje. She is radiant, has strong vocals and projects confidence. The song is catchy enough with a hippie-country feeling about it. I like it a lot though I’m not sure it could do better than Shalisa.
I’m disappointed that everyone voted unanimously for the winning act. I think the results could have been much more nuanced. ‘Million Lights’ could still get a revamp…

I listened all the 5 live performances of the dutch NF and..
Shalisa won because she had the big advantage of her big screen & the couple boy-girl that was dancing…It good but NOT the #1 best among all..
Guusje had the #1 best live performance among all & she truly deserved to win over Shalisa & be the one that would represent Holland in Bulgaria’s Junior Vision instead…I’m just sad that this did not happen..

My top5 rank after watching the live performances is this one..
1) Guusje
2) Myrthe
3) Shalisa
4) 4Life
5) Nohr

There’s nothing that stands out about this song. Not to mention the painful back up dancers like this has been used and abused for years.

I am Dutch, i voted for this. Shalisa was amazing. Only if Lina wins in Slovenia this could be beaten. I’m so happy. Here is my top:

1. The Netherlands 9/10
2. Ukraine 8/10
3. Albania 7.5/10
4. Russia 7.5/10
5. Belarus 7/10

That was really expected to happen…I’m not surprised at all..
Shalisa was hyped as the favorite to win yesterday in the dutch NF & represent Netherland in Bulgaria’s Vision…Except Shalisa i was expecting either 4Life or Nohr to might win as well..
If she manages to wins in the JESC of Sofia i will not be surprised though..

My own personal favorite 4 last night was Guusje but i knew that she was not going to win though…But thankfully she did not finish 5th last…She managed to qualify to the final beating the odds & that was enough success..

Shalisa’s posturing throughout this song reminded me of Norway’s 1988 ESC entry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2t3brulMhc In terms of composition structure, both go one octave higher on the final chorus which provides an impetus and a reaffirmation to the strength of the melody. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen with Shalisa’s song: it never reaches any genuine melodic climax and puts all the pressure on Shalisa’s vocals to impress and make up for a weak tonality. It achieves exactly the opposite… I hope the Dutch team manages to redo some of the damage here because Shalisa certainly has star-quality and it’s just not tight to… Read more »

“A Million Lights” was presented in an artistic, classy, and charming manner. However, I have trouble finding original or noteworthy features (either positive or negative) in the musical composition itself.

My current ranking would be:

1. Russia – 9/10
2. Belarus – 8/10
3. Albania – 6/10
4. Ukraine – 5/10
5. Netherlands – 4/10

I’m sorry to say this, but it’s unlikely this song is even going to make 36 points in Bulgaria (not including the traditional 12 points every act gets in the first place) because it’s such an outdated and kitschy ballad that could never stand the test of time. Shalisa is a charming kid with a nice fashion sense, but her high-pitch sounds are screechy and overbearing. Sitting throughout the song behind the piano doesn’t fully allow her personality to shine out and instead is being distracted by artificial smoke and a somewhat lackluster dancing duo. The Netherlands should have learned… Read more »

Great voice but boring song and sometimes screamy. I think 4LIFE, Nohr or Myrthe would have been a better choice. About the show: everything was in such a hurry! Jan didn’t even go to the Green Room and while giving the points he did it asap like this years ESC 1st semifinal xD And Leona was great, she was honest and professional, I would really like to see her back next year 🙂 But first, let’s see what Shalisa’s gonna do in Bulgaria

Pretty much all of last year’s JESC songs were good.. so this year’s entries aren’t going to be that good.

Her song has grown on me a lot and surprisingly it’s now my favourite of the selected songs so far. I think she’ll do pretty well in the contest, could even win due to the lack of any clear cut winning songs yet.

I don’t know about you…but, I’m not really feeling many of these songs for JESC. At this point last year, I had several favorites, but this time there’s little to favor and what’s up with the promotion? I think Malta had better hype.

I am so happy, my favorite won… I think 4Life had a more suitable song, but Shalisa’s vocals are so on point, it was amazing. I wish her the best of luck and with Sweden not competing The Netherlands don’t have a lot of friends left, so it will be tough.

Very bad choice. At this moment Belarus aims to victory with very weak entry, because someone has to win this turtle race.

I think there is a chance we could win with Shalisa. And I am okay with her as a winner, she is talented and had a nice performance. I hope the don’t change too much of the performance though.

Personally, I wanted Guusje to win but Shalisa is such a sweet girl + her voice is amazing. I wish her all the best!
