Exactly two months ago, Georgia announced that Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz would represent the country at Eurovision 2016. Today we finally know the song — “Midnight Gold”.

Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz “Midnight Gold”

The entry was first presented to the Georgian public along with four other songs on 3 February. Voting began the following day and remained open until earlier today. These televotes were than combined with the scores of an international jury to give us the final result.

Combined results

Georgia Jury points

The indie band consists of Nika Kocharov (vocals, guitar), Gia Iashvili (vocals, bass), Nick Davitashvili (guitar, keyboards) and Dima Oganesian (drums). They’ll now go on to sing “Midnight Gold” in Stockholm next May. The track proved relatively popular with our Wiwi Jury, which ranked it first out of out of the five with an average of score of 6.58/10. Luis was particularly enthusiastic. In his 9/10 review he compared the track to a Blur number. However, Antranig was less positive, saying that “at best, it is noise pollution — at worst, it’s like jabbing a needle in your ear.”

“Midnight Gold” was also a favourite with readers, finishing second in our fan poll.

So… are we just going to ignore that massive voting discrepancy? Over 1000 votes more? Really?

Remember Georgia in 2011, they had an amazing song that wasn’t eurovision friendly, but still did very well! This year… dreadfull.

Yeah, this is another case of the average Eurovisioner being against any non-pop entry. But it is nice to see that there are others who appreciate different genres in the contest, and so depending on the rest of the songs, this could pull an Eldrine and qualify.

Georgia seems to be a new every other year country. One year they are good, next year they are rubbish. Last year they were good, this year not so much.
This sounds as a “tribute” band to Oasis or various Brit-pop group, without being any good at it. I do like Brit-pop but it had its moment and era.
Will struggle to qualify!

If you’re don’t like this kind of song doesn’t mean it was crap.. making music is not as simple as y’all thought and i bet most of the commentators can’t even play a single instrument.

I just love it, my favorite so far.
So far ESC 2016 is shaping up to be bland and mainstream so it could stand out, but I’m afraid it might be one of those ‘too good for Eurovision’ entries.
Best of luck Georgia, you have my vote!

Best track they have by miles. Now I doubt it would have enough staying power. Will the revamp work?

Major improvement over last year’s cheap Warrior trash, first and foremost. It’s not your usual ESC drivel, hence the narrow-minded eurofans writing Georgia off as soon as the act’s name was announced, but then again, I’d much rather have “mediocre indie rock” than whatever Spain or Malta are sending, so props to them for at least trying to bring in something different…

One of the worst songs I have ever heard. I’m afraid Georgia has gone back to the crap of 2014. The song is just awful and the singing is not really singing. The screeching from the thing that guy uses is disgusting and pains my ears. I must also point out that the sing has more dislikes than likes on Youtube. If this gets to the final… what a waste of a spot it would be. Unless another 15 countries send something as bad as this then a spot in the final would be allowed. The best place a song… Read more »

I really enjoy this kind of songs but this one needs a MAJOR revamp. It’s kind of a big fat mess as of now.

It reminds me of a song that would be on Guitar Hero. I don’t really mind it, and it’s definitely not the worst song that has been selected. But I don’t have hope of it making it to the final.

I’m a big fan of indie rock in all its shapes and forms, this band is just a very bad example of the genre. They’re stuck in the 90s, that’s all very well but then also don’t auto tune your vocals and don’t use some sort of drum sequencer on your ‘live’ performance.

I’m gay but I really like this song it’s my fifth right now. This song was my very guilty pleasure and now I’m listening over and over and over. I really don’t get the hate about it. It’s epic!

They had to choose one of the songs I wasn’t convinced by… I would’ve preferred “Right or Wrong” or “Weagree” over this one.

Either way, they really need a quality studio engineer to take care of their sound, because the elements of the song just don’t completely add up. The vocals especially sound weak, but I’m not sure whether that’s the fault of the mixing or the vocalist’s fault. At least Midnight Gold has some good ideas (particularly the instrumentals).

I think this will make more of an impact than the likes of Denmark & Switzerland and I would rank it above those so far. It was my favourite of the 5 and at least they made a good choice. It’s certainly different to what’s selected so far. I really enjoy the music

i love it, but they played themselves by choosing a not-so-catchy song there are shades of identitet in this 1) Italy (I can’t find the full version since it’s unavailable in the US, but I adored it at San Remo) 2) Belgium 3) Spain (Used to be #1 but the rabid Spanish fans on the Ukrainian semifinal livestream have ruined it for me) 4) Austria 5) Switzerland 6) Georgia (would be 2 with Weagree, 3 with Right or Wrong, 4 with Sugar and Milk) 7) Albania (needs a revamp badly, was like 4 three days ago) 8) Denmark (slowly rising… Read more »

Gays are predicting, that this song will not go through semi. But they forgot, that 96% of viewers are straight and they will vote for it. I will laugh, when it will qualify and it will be shock for them 😀

Stephanie

Listening to the song, it’s got an Oasis kind of indie-rock feel to it, but with all the effects in the middle of the song it’s way too noisy for me. So to sum it up, “Midnight Gold” feels like lead – it’s going to be hard to qualify from what is shaping up to be a tough second semi

ct_greece

Sure, they can get gold. If you count from last place 🙂

As formulaic and generic as can be within its own genre, with a singer that’s flatter than an iron board and a band less interesting to look at than a dead clam. Georgia, this year I’m afraid you’re stuck in the semis.

My top-10 so far:
#1 Austria
#2 Switzerland
#3 Spain
#4 Malta
#5 Denmark
#6 Ireland
#7 Belgium
#8 Albania
#9 Georgia
#10 Belarus

It could work better with a little revamp to clean some sounds and make it a bit edgier, but it’s still a mediocre entry. And it’s not because it’s a rock song, at all! Rock, Indie rock, Prog rock, Metal etc. songs are NOT out of place at Eurovision: we’ve seen that with Lordi, Softengine, Kaliopi and many others. The problem of this kind of rock songs, just like Armenia in 2013, is that they’re really uninspiring. So, congratulations to Georgia because they often bring different things than the usual ESC songs, but trying something different doesn’t mean that you… Read more »

Yeah.. no matter what they would have sent, they would have came last anyway. And I think it will remain my last too.

And not because I am a hysterical gay (I am not), according to some people (just because I don’t like this style and do like popsongs). It is just not my kind of style.
