Barei from Spain has just completed the second rehearsal of her song “Say Yay!” at Eurovision 2016 and much like first rehearsal, she sounded and looked amazing. Her live vocal slays the pack. She’s oozing confidence and sex and has us begging for more! The camera angles and the backing vocalists have improved a lot since the first rehearsal, but there is still something missing and it’s very difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s lacking.
The staging from the first rehearsal was identical in the second rehearsal – triangles aplenty in shades of neon green and pink. The staging still doesn’t match the power of the song or Barei’s vocal, so in a way it does feel like a bit of a mismatch.
Barei’s backing vocalists also seem to lack energy. “Say Yay!” is an anthem. It needs power and oomph to at least match, if not elevate the song to another level. The dance moves are sloppy and awkward. On a positive note, the voices of the backing vocalists have improved significantly since the first rehearsal.
It will be interesting to see how Barei fairs in the grand final. There’s so many positives about this performance but the negatives do make a big impact.

It’s this year’s more modern and chic entry. It doesn’t look like Eurovision at all, it’s more like the MTV Awards or Superbowl interact… I agree about the backing singers, they should be less visible, but the rest is really really cool,
sadly maybe not for the average Eurovision viewer …
all of you, why don’t you get rid of your cliche that her vocalists HAVE TO dance and entertain you? They are telling you story – from shy awkward moves to complete dance at the end. like you started to learn dance moves and got success at the end. why don’t you stop saying silly things with a face of experts?
if you cannot understand what’s going on on stage, learn how to do it! don’t blame Barei for your own stupid cliches and lack of intelligence!

My motivation: I want to see Brequette’s hair on the great night 😀 Those girls are as cool as Barei.
If she’s ready to change some easy things like this one, just bring coherency to the meaning of her song, she’s gonna be great on the night. IMHO Barei fills the stage as no other this year with her expressions and that powerful gaze her eyes always give.
If they are not dancers, what are you doing Barei bringing them on stage? why not to bring real dancers? maybe from the video as they are so cool and funny sometimes. I don’t get it. You have a good song and this could be such a hit on stage. Why you want to show the world a group of uncoordinated, out of tone, and boring backing vocals? why? put them on the side, hide them or don’t bring them at all!!
For the little things those BVs are doing (which are not dancers BTW) they should be on the stage sides. Leave Barei alone right there and give lots of close-ups for Barei and also for the BVs too.
Good or bad, she’s doing all this on her own. She’s a singer and composer, but she’s not a specialist in this scenography thing. It’s a F shame the RTVE spanish delegation is so full of “apoltronados añejos” (public tv servants that don’t want to lose their job, they’re just there for the money) They are so useless and so outdated in understanding what Eurovision is now that I don’t even know what they still doing there. Barei is too expressive that she should be the main focus.
And she should have lots of face shots.
Where I have to look when the five of them appear in the same shot? They’re not even doing the same action. Barei is dancing free and those BV are doing their routine. Very confusing.
Give separate TV shots for everyone. Don’t betray this way a magnificient song like this one.
That’s true @Kreuzbergfan. I think barei is too humble that she wants to share the stage with her friends, as a gesture of appreciation. What she’s probably missing is that she’s sacrificing her own message. This is her personal story, she should be there alone and maybe join them when the celebration part starts. please use the link from Julen comment and watch her back vocalists to create their dance from simple half-moves to complete dance at the end. it’s the idea of evolution of dance. they are not just to shake their butty to please the audience, they are telling the story.
Do you really want Spain to remove their story concept because you’re failing to see obvious things? God save us from EXPERTS, give us couple of eyes and a slice of brain to translate what we just saw!

Enzo, I think and hope you are right! It’s logical they are prepearing this for the TV and not for the fans viewing and reviewing rehershals! I hope they know what they are doing and always reading/ listenings to critics for improvement. All in all we are talking about a winning song and an amazing performer, so it will be quite funny to see all betters losing money not trusting Spain’s chances!

Spain is continuing to slip in the odds and you can understand why. It just looks like a mess. The outfits are bad, the energy is off, the backing vocalists are distracting. I think this may end up doing worse than Edurne.
Why some of you are putting spanish chances down? With Spain is always the same: hype or over criticism. Why so bipolar? This performance is super TV oriented. It’s about body and facial expressions. Dance, lights, shades, emotions… If you see it from a static camera shot like this one, this obviously loses all its charm. Becomes anticlimatic and boring. Who the hell is the choreographer? They should be fired! Spain, for once, has an anthem-like song, and this the lackluster performance they’ll be giving us next week? C’mon! They need two or three male Hip-Hop dancers to interact with Barei and two female backing vocalists in the background. After watching the second rehearsal, I’m sad to say that Spain will tank.
I do hope there will be more energy on Saturday cause the song needs it.
Other than that it’s a great song that deserves to do well.

Why Barei?You have one of the best songs in the contest.you have a great voice,you’ve made an energetic and powerfull video and you bring that to the stage?Akward movents from the backing vocalists and a static perfomance.I was expenting more.Just check Belgium’s perfomance to understand what is missing from Spain.
Today I completly agree with Wiwibloggs. There’s something missing and it is the stage presence. The back vocalists need to move more!! It is a real anthem as Wiwi said!! And please we should use other lights colours!! On the other hand, Barei was amazing as always and the back vocalists were on point as the other day (Brequette should not make those notes so high). If we improve these details we could reach a top 10, if not we would end up in the bottom with logical reasons

backing singers arent suppose to move too much. they have one job only-to help the lead singer with the song. But maybe they could swap two singers with dancers and the rest of backing singer put somewhere else… That would be better. Other than that I like the outfits and the simplicity of stage.

It’s funny to read how this performance is lacking something but Dami Im sitting on a box for three minutes is not.
Having said that, I share the concerns with the backing singers. I would prefer not having them on stage and having a some fierce slick dancers instead.
Thanks Wiwis for this review! I hope Spain will fix all these issues, but, to me it’s just so good! My concern is still the backing vocalists, which could be more energetic and not so static. But, I see no mention of the beautiful double effect and the fall on this article, key elements on her performance. It’s fun and makes-you-dance so badly! The message is so inspiring and the fall is part of it. The backing vocalists makes some sign language moves & this is also quite interesting to me.
It’s insulting to see Brequette as a back singer. She is better singer than Barei and deserved to be the protagonist.
The only thing this needs is more movement, the backing singers/dancers could even do the same dance but with more energy and it would already be better. The feet dance felt anticlimatic in the second rehearsal video, like you were expecting a burst and she was just doing the movements way too slowly. I wish they could capture the energy in the videoclip.

Totally agree Marco! They need more Life in this performance, bright colors in the main part and the end. Silver and blue don’t match this song. The dress of the backing singers, though ok, is not the best. More urban would be better? Even hidden? Barei we want party and cheer in here!
I hope (pray) that they are serving the energy until Friday and specially saturday, I wanna see the whole arena jumping and having fun.

I do think the backing singers improved a bit since last Friday, however i think they should dance and move MUCH MORE to really transmit the power and good vibes of the song. At the same time, i think they should introduce lots of LIGHTS during the chorus, I mean, I know there is lighting already but I really feel this song demands much more energy and movement, it needs to make people want to move, dance and just go crazy!

Why don’t they use some bright colours? Red, gold, yellow, orange? This is an upbeat fun song! Bue-grey-silver will not work…
It seems they heard the critics and improved! The back singers sound good now, and I love they made a choreography based on signs language! Barei’s vocals are amazing once more and she will have an explosive interaction with the public. They have the song and an excellent performer… what is missing, might be the energy and the charisma the song demands? Are they reserving this for the final?
