We’re over a quarter of the way through our trip to Latvia for the Supernova 2018 Wiwi Jury. As it stands, Edgars Kreilis leads the way with our team of music unprofessionals. Next up for their judgement is MIONIA with “You”.
MIONIA is a talented pianist, having played the instrument since the age of six. She’s also worked as a model in the past, but has now chosen to dedicate her time to music.
MIONIA — “You”
“You” Reviews
Chris: There’s definite problems with “You”, but there’s a raw beauty to the song that actually shines through. If MIONIA stripped away the affected accent and tidied up some of the lyrics, this could be truly beautiful. As it is, anything in a Regina Spektor-esque style is always a plus. Also, given that it’s down the road, I have to give props to the Greenwich/DLR footage.
Score:6.5/10
Kristin: What is up with that accent? Is MIONIA posing as Australian? Faux Cockney? Lena? It’s baffling. But with that said, the song itself has a certain something. It’s intriguing for some reason that you can’t put your finger to. Maybe the beautiful piano solo in the beginning, or the heavy strings in the back. It’s likeable, regardless of the odd accent.
Score: 7.5/10
Edgars: A guilty pleasure. The melody of the song, beautiful strings and notes of piano – adored. No doubts that MIONIA can sing live, either. But the simplicity of lyrics are a worry, though, and it might not make it to final. Fingers crossed, MIONIA – I fell in love with this song since the first day.
Score: 7/10
Antranig: The style of singing reminds me a bit of Lena’s “Satellite”, even though the song is extremely different. Sadly this lacks any of the star power that “Satellite” possessed. Vocally, it’s a very interesting experience, but the song itself is so dull. The lyrics (and video) try to take us on a journey but in the end, the song goes nowhere.
Score: 1/10
Robyn: We need to talk about the lyrics, because there are some pretty bad lines in this. “I’m not a blind”, she sings — presumably this isn’t a reference to window shades. But MIONIA has a compelling tone to her voice, sometimes sounding like a quirky English folk singer. There’s a stark beauty in “You” and the potential for a haunting live performance.
Score: 7/10
Jordi: Another entry to pique your interest. MIONIA’s voice is pure obsession and by having this very peculiar tone, she makes her sing truly special. While serving emotional vibes through her song “You”, she manages to create a fragile atmosphere that keeps flowing until the end. However, it’s quite repetitive and the song still feels too small for her.
Score: 6/10
Bernardo: I’m a sucker for slow ballads at the piano, but they need to get me emotionally involved. It’s not the case here. While MIONIA’s voice is very beautiful and unique, it comes off cold and – thanks to the song – plain. The problem here is clearly the song. It’s just not good enough within its genre.
Score: 5.5/10

Very underrated imo…
It’s not my favourite, but absolutely in my top 5.
I think this is a really nice song! My 3rd of Supernova, below This Time and Running Red Lights 😀
Someone I know just watched the video and told me the accent is “brummy”, as in from Birmingham. Mayyybee?
I’m in the middle with this one.
It’s sth about that song I like, the atmosphere and the mystery, her beautiful voice, how well it could be presented on a big stage together with a powerful performance. All these make me like that song.
6/10
It’s haunting!! But the genre itself I’m not a fan of! No sing-along quality at all. 6/10
Anyone remember “The Beautiful South”? There are unintentional echoes of that style here. But realistically, this is an homage to Adele’s “Hometown Glory”. The similarities are evident in the piano arpeggios and strings tracks, and in the way the harmony itself is lost in a “mist” of rounds – although “You” somewhat improves upon this by hinting at a lovely major key. Unfortunately, the singer not being Adele is the exact problem here. The ability to use the local dialect correctly is not there. Okay, so Adele has issues there too, but with Adele her English issues sound more authentic.… Read more »
Antraing: Soledad 10/10, You: 1/10 What the hell…?? It’s not a problem ,that you think Soledad is better but ratings like these seem totally silly. I’d give ”You” an 8/10 or something. Everything about 4 to 9 seems okay, but 1?
Wiwibloggers Jury and us are just having fun. We are not professionals. It is in the disclaimer. 🙂 So yes, we can give 1 or even 0 if we want to. And so can you.
Yeah, I know that. It’s also good to not include the highest score then I guess.
“You” somewhat captivates me. Mionia’s voice is interesting, but her accent is a problem for me, I can’t conect with the song at all. Not a finalist, but it’s enjoyable at least.
6/10
Also, I will never understand Antranig scores…
Antranig How can you give Soledad a 10 and This a 1. I like This, No winner or somethig, just an ok song
6/10
There’s just something about this song. Can’t pinpoint it, but it’s possibly the beauty beyond the lyrics and words. I need to see this live.
I like this. It shouldn’t win but I like listening to it. The accent works with the song but it is slightly repetitive, especially lyrically. A bit of deviation here and there would have been nice.
My opinion on “You” would be very similar to Bernardo’s. There are calming components to this I really like, but it just isn’t a very striking entry alltogether. 5.5 to 6 out of 10 seems fair.
I actually really love Mionia’s entry, one of my favorite in Supernova this year.
