Storms don’t last forever, and thankfully neither do attempted stage invasions.

During tonight’s grand final, a stage invader burst on from stage left during the UK’s performance and attempted to snatch the mic from singer SuRie — real name Susana Marie Cork.

As he approached the singer three members of the Eurovision crew could be seen in the fog chasing after him.

Sebastian Diaz, a wiwiblogger inside the Arena, watched with horror as the incident unfolded. In a Facebook message sent to wiwibloggs moments after the invasion he said:

“A man jumped on the left bridge through the railing. The golden circle crowd was in awe and looking at each other in confusion. We knew this was no backup dancer.”

“SuRie was without doubt in shock, but [stage director] Henrick grabbed the stage invader and tussled with him.”

“SuRie defiantly grabbed the mic from the front of the stage and soldiered on. The atmosphere changed from panic to sheer support. We all instantly new the song took on a whole new meaning.”

The official BBC Eurovision Twitter released this statement moments afterwards: “Just to confirm, SuRie is OK. More news when we get it.”

The Hertfordshire singer was thought to be crying as she was taken off stage.

But she’ll no doubt dry those tears, as it’s widely expected that she’ll have another opportunity to perform (just as the Spanish contestant Daniel Diges did in 2010 when an invader stormed his performance).

The resilience SuRie showed during her performance has already endeared her to millions, as did her effortless return to the choreography. Following the tussle with the stranger, she returned to her fist pumping and nailed the choreography.

In the ten minutes that followed the incident, her odds to win fell from 150/1 to 50/1. Within 20 minutes she had shortened to 10/1. The bookies, like many of us in the press room, think the public will have immense sympathy for what went down.

Several performances later, the BBC confirmed that SuRie had been given the opportunity to perform again, but  declined.

“SuRie and her team are extremely proud of her performance and have together decided that there is absolutely no reason to perform the song again.”

Hello Surie. In this second message of mine, I want to see you smile again, by some funny remarks (I hope). I’m a Dutch man, but these days I felt a little bit British. That’s a nice feeling because you invented tennis, soccur/football, snooker and ……… James Bond. He always said: I’m shaken, not stirred. Oeps I think I make a little mistake now… To comfort you I want to give you a little hug of 1 second. If you want to last it for 2 seconds, that’s okay with me because it doesn’t costs any money. And, did I… Read more »

I’ve tried to find her personal e-mail address, but I couldn’t find it……. Besides everyone in the world can read the messages on this wesite, so Surie too ….. I even have written a message to her on the facebook site of the eurovision song contest and in that message I refered to this message of me on this site. Or have you a better idea to let her read this message?

Well, at least I was right that there’d be a surprise when she actually performed…

SuRie was an absolute champ, and deserved every point she got. I’m sad she couldn’t make it past the bottom five, but she was excellent start to finish and the UK should be very proud of her (and that stage invader should be beyond ashamed of himself).

SuRie should represent the UK next year, with one of her own produced songs, not some bland, generic song every one hated! She was so professional with her performance (despite the poxy idiot invading the stage).

I completely agree with many others here. SuRie was absolutely amazing. Even before the stage invader arrived, I thought her performance was flawless, and her song has always been amongst my top 10 favorites. But what followed just took things to a whole different level. Many, including myself, would have froze or broke down after that incident, but she remained resilient and the emotional performance she delivered thereafter was a testament to her strength and bravery, and it really highlighted the theme of her song. I truly hope she is alright now, after that traumatic experience. She is so talented… Read more »

I presume the EBU is in charge of security? Or RTP? I say shame on the EBU. Not uploading the actual performance on their YouTube channel and pretending as nothing at all had happened. I am disgusted albeit not surprised at all. On the other hand, I have tremendous respect for SuRie. Wow. Just wow. The song still sucks though and got what it deserved. But omg, that reaction shows true greatness. I wonder how other would have reacted and wonder why her/the UK? Further investigation is needed.

Something really needs to be done with security in events like this. Imagine if it was far worse than a mic grab? I felt the few following acts where a bit unnerved as well in their performances. The odd thing is no one in the show (like the hosts) acknowledged something just happened, and just continued on as usual. At least they cut to commercial break after the performance for a bit to figure what had happened & regroup. Imagine if there was a second incident which proved more fatal? It just felt a bit cold how it was handled

They actually stopped and Filomena interviewed Melovin in the backstage. That was not planned, as Serbia should have continued without a break. I just am so sorry for SuRie because she looked very scared and violated.

I’m sorry but it was not the demonstrator, televote or the crowd who stepped in to sing the song whilst SuRie was getting a new mice who ruined the night for the UK but it was the judges. She had one of the best performances yesterday for the jury but the marks they gave were totally unfair. i SAID IT LAST YEAR AND SAY IT AGAIN – BAN THE JUDGES. They cost us too much to fly them over there, feed and house them, give the money to charity and let the public decide. Professionals my foot. Well done SuRie… Read more »

I understand what you mean but you’re a bit off with your judgement because last year Lucie was placed 10th in the jury votes. If it wasn’t for them, UK would place bottom and not just 15th place(she got only 12 points from televotes). Let’s just face it, Storm was an underwhelming song and the staging idea wasn’t as innovative as Never Give Up on You.

nice comments from the BBC about ireland’s staging and performance- contrary to wiwibloggers and wiwibloggs views
Oh Ryan, what a lovely song you’ve given us.

The track, Together, is beautiful in its own right, but using the dancers to tell a story of first romance – followed by suspicion and heartbreak adds another layer. The fact that those two dancers are male sends a message of inclusivity, which has long been part of Eurovision culture and history.
