That was a convoluted title. So please take a moment to have a think.
And now that you have, we can confirm: AWS, Hungary’s Eurovision 2018 act, have released a mash-up of their song “Viszlát nyár” and Netta’s “Toy”.
In theory that sounds like a cheese-and-chalk scenario sure to leave a bad taste in your mouth. But as it turns out, their post-metal instrumental works incredibly well with Netta’s funky freestyling.
Paired with the heavy drumming and electronic guitars, her voice takes on an angry rock vibe — and one that works rather well with her song’s theme of women standing up and standing strong.
While Netta’s distinct vocals remain instantly recognisable, she now sounds like the love child of Courtney Love and Nicki Minaj.
Besides delivering this rather memorable mash-up, AWS have been busy showcasing their own versatility.
On Friday evening they performed as special guests during the final of Virtuózok (“Virtuoso”), an X Factor for classically trained singers and musicians.
More orchestral than pop, the show called for a special performance and the men of AWS most definitely delivered.
They toned down the song’s heavy metal elements, delivering something more acoustic and tame.
Trading their shorts and t-shirts for black suits, the guys put on an elegant display — and Ors even wore shoes!
During the bridge, when Ors normally dives into the audience or runs around the stage, he stood in place and let an opera singer belt it out instead. Virtuosos, indeed!
Are you loving their acoustic sound? What do you think of their mash-up with “Toy”? Should Netta moonlight as a rock star? Let us know down below!
I just discovered something I didn’t know I needed.
Tbh, I don’t like ”Viszlat toy”, but that ”opera” version is absolutely amazing, thank you for the link <3
This works SO well! I really hope they perform live together some time. AWS really are such legends, we were lucky to have them in Eurovision this year!
The headline let me intrigued, the mash-up made me delighted!
This is really good! I’ve heard it before but I had no idea that AWS did it, I thought that it was made by a fan. If it’s offical, they should really consider performing it live with Netta someday.
I like it A LOT
I like it! Reminds me of a mashup someone made of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” set to the instrumental from “Blue Monday” by New Order. They fit together pretty nicely.
Kylie actually had the mashup version on one of the special editions of her album “Fever”. You can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/v5ec5SfoB6U
Thank you aws for this nice mash up <3
Hahaha. That worked better than it had any right to…
Oh, please.
Is it bad that I like this unironically?
Viszlát Toy is ludicrously funny. So, so good.
Since Hungary is participating in Eurovision Young Musicians later this year, I’m curious if Virtuózok is their national selection for the competition.
