Entries for Melodifestivalen 2019 don’t open until the end of the month, but we’re already one step closer to discovering the first confirmed artist. Sverigesradio has announced the eight finalists who will compete in P4 Nästa later this month.

The contest is run by Swedish Radio P4 and aims to find new artists and new music suited to the station format. The eight finalists were selected from 25 nominees representing the regional P4 stations.

The eight acts who will compete on August 25 at the P4 Nästa grand final are:

  • Amandine X – “Beautiful Mess”
  • Beside the Bridge – “Cool Kid”
  • Ewelina Westin – “Fading light”
  • Jahr – “Magic”
  • Josias Andersson – “En kort sekund” (A short second)
  • Patricia Birgersson – “Här och nu” (Here and now)
  • Spring City – “Back on our streets”
  • The Lovers of Valdaro – “Lost forever”

Since 2012, the contest has also given one act a place in the semi-finals of Melodifestivalen. The ticket originally went to the overall Nästa winner, but since 2015, it has been determined separately by the competition jury.

The adult radio favourites of Nästa haven’t always been a good match for the bright television aesthetic of Mello.

The Nästa acts with the best results at Melfest were Terese Fredenwall with “Breaking the Silence” in 2012 and Smilo with “Weight of the World” in 2015. Both acts each placed fifth in their respective semi-final, and both narrowly missed out on Andra Chansen.

Last year’s Melfest pick Stiko Per Larsson — who also won P4 Nästa 2017 — only placed sixth in his semi-final at Melodifestivalen 2018.

As the P4 Nästa final takes places before the 1 September release deadline for Eurovision songs, the winner of the Melodifestivalen wildcard must enter Melfest with a new song.

The grand final of P4 Nästa 2018 will take place on August 25 in Linköping. Also performing at the final will be former Melodifestivalen winners Benjamin Ingrosso and Anna Bergendahl, as well as last year’s P4 Nästa winner Stiko Per Larsson.

I guess it’s too much to ask for Normandie to be part of Melfest?

Pretty decent line-up with some interesting tunes, some of them are better entries that the ones that will make it for other countries…

This is how I see it:

1. Beside the Bridge – “Cool kid”
2. The Lovers of Valdaro – “Lost forever”
3. Jahr – “Magic”
4. Josias Andersson – “En kort sekund”

1. Patricia Birgersson – “Här och nu”
2. Beside the Bridge – “Cool kid”
3. Spring City – “Back on our streets”

These 3 were by far the best for me, would love to see any of them go to Melodifestivalen. Patricia is number 1 for me because it’s such a sweet and happy sounding song, and if it does go to Melodifestivalen… who knows? We could see Sweden send a Swedish song to Eurovision 2019 🙂

Sweden will never send a song in Swedish to ESC, that is for sure! Most likely it will tank in the semi,as most of these does!
