In less than a month, the winner of OT 2018 will be decided. But before then, we have Gala 10 to look at. The final eight acts each gave a solo performance, and for the first time the audience favourites were not revealed.

Opening the show was this year’s group song “Somos” (We are). All the previously eliminated acts (hola, Alfonso!) were brought back to join in, with an uplifting song on par with last year’s “Camina”.

This week’s sing-off was between Marta and María, whose charming boyfriend was brought on to say how much he missed her culo. María sunk her teeth into Patti Smith’s “Because the Night”, while Marta proved herself the queen of the ’80s with Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”. In the end, María became the ninth act eliminated from OT 2018.

With only seven acts left in the competition, there were no audience favourites this week. So instead we’re first going to look at the three acts who the jury saved from elimination.

This week’s big stand-out performance came from Natalia. At the beginning of the series, she seemed like a potential winner, but over the weeks she delivered plenty of very good performances but not enough great ones. Tonight, though, she brought it. Natalia sand Coldplay’s tender breakup ballad “The Scientist” and fans are comparing it to Amaia’s “Shake It Out” performance from OT 2017. Her emotional delivery was popular with the audience and the jury loved it too.

Closing the show and bringing the house down was Famous, who was in his element with Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”. Famous has faced elimination the previous two weeks, but there was no chance of that this week. He proved himself to be a bold entertainer and rightly got a huge crowd reaction.

The third act the jury saved from elimination was Julia. But here’s the thing — it wasn’t a stand-out performance of the evening. Julia gave a decent enough performance of “A que no me dejas” but it didn’t reach the emotional depths of Natalia’s performance of the entertainment of Famous’. But the jury liked it.

Alba Reche — who has been in the public’s top three seven times — found herself in the bottom four for the first time. She performed LP’s “Lost On You” and it was exactly the kind of performance her fans have come to love, complete with her trademark gravelly vocals. But it wasn’t enough to keep her out of the bottom four.

That means that joining Alba in the bottom four was Miki, Sabela and, yet again, Marta. The academy professors chose to save Alba, though we suspect her large and loyal fanbase would have ensured she would win any sing-off. The four saved acts then voted to save Miki, leaving Sabela and Marta up for elimination next week. This will be Sabela’s second time in an elimination singoff, while Marta is become a veteran with her fourth time.

Next week gets super dramatic, as the four acts who avoid elimination will also be assured of a place in the grand final, while the two others will fight for the one remaining place. Who will make it to the final?

Lol OT trying to cover up the ‘fiasco’ that was Famous performance last Gala…it was obvious that it was gonna be THE performance of the night, obvious from day one when they gave him this song. It was all planned out, they’re trying so hard to make him the winner. Not that i mind, actually, but i prefer others. When they leave the show it’s gonna be a different story and we all know that the 3 girls are the only ones who will have a career, the ones who are actually selling on charts already, maybe Miki as well… Read more »

they are literally trying to make one person that is not Famous the winner from the day 1 😀 I don’t mind any of them winning, but you should check out the songs each of them had every gala, the staging, the video presentations before the performances, the comments of the jury, and a lot of other important things … and I think then you will figure out who I am talking about 😀 and believe me it is not Famous 😀

and fiasco??? please 😀

Jeez what a disappointment alba. I guess this is her first flop. It looked like she already gave up before she opened her mouth! those 3 deserved to go through and i hope that Marta stays, she has a great voice, presence and english (unlike sabela , i appreaciate her effort but i dont see any improvement or potential there, sorry-_-)

Alba said the day after that the video they put before her performance had an impact on her, almost causing her an anxiety attack (they posted the part in which she was talking about her ex-boyfriend with her professors in one class, and also some of her other moments throughout the week…) I get what she said. it is understandable she did her best in those circumstances. and I also wish the production didn’t do the same with almost all of the other videos, for the other contestants. ( in one gala or another). there are a lot of great… Read more »

I didn’t expect all the love for Julia. She has had a lot,…let’s say… “luck” with her songs, but she should’ve been nominated this time. The jury and the Academy are protecting her from elimination by saving her and giving her matching songs since she had two bad galas in a row. Totally opposite to what’s going on with Sabela. They gave a non-standout song compared to the others, she nailed it and got nominated because… yes (Ana Torroja had to make up some reasons). Sabela is working very hard, she has to continue.

That’s absolutely NOT true. I’d love to know where was that luck because the academy only saved her ONCE, and saved FAMOUS TWICE. She has been nominated 2 times in a row, last gala if you dont remember. And didnt deserve to be this time. The show is protecting Alba and Natalia since the beginning, they give them lots of money and views with their fake romance, it’s clear, but for once, Alba was nominated and it was very fair. She was out of tune and completely lost while performing, she even said so. Her pronunciation was also bad. two… Read more »

Ah, and famous is definitely very protected by the academy (not the judges) tho i dont see you whining. They have always gave him matching songs in english, totally for his style, because he just f*cks up in spanish, and they also gave him that eurovision song that was perfect for him for a reason… easy path.

about famous and matching songs. I won’t say that they haven’t given him songs he can sing well. ( take me to church, nobody but you, feel it still – he sang that one with Natalia which can be a blessing or a course because .. it’s Natalia he has to sing next to) but he has also had songs that are not his style and were a challenge for him. he practiced every day to make it work on stage! he has worked and has learned from them, so now he can do the things he couldn’t before. (I… Read more »

excuse meee? you dont have to tear others down to build your favorites lol The ‘luck’ thing is BS. You either have it or you dont, you can f* ck it up even if it’s a matching song for ya. Happens all the time. Sabela, realistically speaking, didn’t nail this imo. She was boring and didnt sing well, not to mention how stiff she looked on stage. How the heck does that chick have so many views?? Her voice is so normal and doesn’t have charisma. I don’t see how Julia’s song is a standout either, it’s a boring Spanish… Read more »

It didn’t reach the emotional depths of Natalia’s performance of the entertainment of Famous’? Im sorry Robyn, i definitely dont agree. I’ve been following the show and it’s incredible what Julia can do with her voice while having problems. She was the best of the night for me, along with Famous. She’s extremely underrated by the spanish audience it seems. Mind you, she was totally aphonic and still managed to do incredibly well, as if she didnt have a problem in her voice at all. It was a touching and emotional performance. I suppose it’s a cultural thing, because in… Read more »

My favorite was Julia. I don’t know what she is saying but it’s beautiful and classy. Goosebumps.
The language, the instrumental, her expressions, the emotions that she engraved and her gestures are all perfect. First time hearing this song but I almost cried by listening to it.

I’ll have to disagree, Robyn, I think Julia nailed it again, while Natalia put too much drama on her song. Julia has become one of my favorites lately. There’s some gracefulness about her, because she always finds the most endearing way to deliver lyrics, especially in Spanish. I value that a lot, because I think it’s something that can’t be taught. Though I must say again that she’s not versatile like Famous or Natalia, who share the same technique to perform a ballad but also have the stage presence to hold an uptempo song.

I disagree. Famous and Natalia definitely do not share the same technique to perform a ballad as Julia does. And to say she’s not versatile is silly. Julia showed her versatility and stage presence to hold an uptempo song when she sang Born this way by Lady gaga (while being totally aphonic, would love to see them do the same thing on her situation), but, unlike Famous or natalia, she never had the opportunity to show anything else (uptempo wise) because most of her songs were ballads (in spanish). So it’s unfair and unrealistic to compare and say she’s not… Read more »

Please don’t get me wrong, Laurcn. When I compared Julia’s versatility to Natalia and Famous’ I wasn’t ruling her out as a OT winner and even less as someone who deserves a great carreer (actually, she’s the one I’m most curious to follow after the show). Comparing artists can always be unfair but in a reality competition it’s part of the process. Also the comparison was a nod to something I’ve posted here a week before, stating that Famous and Natalia seemed to be the best choices for Eurovision, at least before they get paired to what’s most important: the… Read more »

Oh i see. Absolutely agree that Natalia and Famous are the best choices for ESC. Born this way was better than Me Muero, in my opinion. She has never danced in her life and did a great job too, was a favorita with something totally out of her style. Agree with you on ‘Arde’, way better than Tu cancion and Aitana has a lot of charisma. Concerning Famous… His weakest performances have all been with spanish songs, for a reason. That’s why the show kept giving him english hits. Natalia should have been nominated with Lush life…but she does ballads… Read more »

Sad to see some Eurovision fans rallying to see their relationship end. If it’s not meant to be then so be it, but it’s not an excuse to ridicule people’s relationships just because the thought of two people in love abhors the living daylights.

The Top 5 is really going be Alba, Natalia, Famous, Julia and Miki, isn’t it? I just wish it would be the first four and Sabela instead of Miki. Is that too much to ask for?

I must say that for me, the standout performance of the night was Julia’s. Maybe for a non-spanish speaker may seem avarage and empty but it was simply perfect! She delivered a performance full of emotion, sweetness, technically great (knowing that she has lost her voice weeks ago gives her a point up!) and I couldnt keep my eyes out of the TV. While Natalia sounded vocally on point but overacted imo.
I think Marta is leaving this week while no winner is still decided!

I am a non spainsh speaker, and I love julia. She is a pro, talented, and I love her voice. And the song she sang, did her good. Smart good choice of song. King alejandro sanz. I wonder if julia and miki will sing a duet together. I think they will do good together. Today we will see what songs they will be given- to marta and sabela. They need to get good songs that suits them, and let them show if they learned anything, at being in the academy. They did progress the same imop. Julia famoys miki carlos… Read more »

Sabela improved a lot. Yesterday she sounded great, so did marta. Good vocals from both of them. They work hard.. they want it especialy marta.
But they lack of Emotional intelligence, the delivery of a song, like julia does.
Marta got today another balad- boring.
Sabela got a wow song, becouse i never thought they will give a song like that! El Quatro de Tula to sabela!!! And for that I think she will be saved.

Actually the nominees ALWAYS choose their songs themselves… Every time. So if anyone gets kicked out bc the song was a poor choice, it’s only the contestant’s fault.

I agree that Sabela improved a lot, she just needs to be more consistent. I really like her voice.

I’ve been Marta’s fan since the beginning and I still do, but I guess she never had a big moment on the show. Anyway, I’m glad that she went that far. She has a lot of unexplored potential.

Well, when I first saw Sabela on Gala0 I thought she was terrible but at the same time that she had potential. We have seen her growing through the competition and was the first contestant (surprise) to make me cry in the edition when she sang Benditas Feridas in Gala2. As for yesterday’s performance, she complaint about the backing track being too poppy and asked for a change on it. The jury though this to be a wrong decision (she was told that) but I thought it was remarkable. I know the song since 2002 and it felt a completly… Read more »

I totally agree with the “something in their eyes” factor you mentioned. It sounds like a cliché, but it makes a big difference when you’re feeling what you’re singing about and not just focusing on reaching the right notes or nailing some choreography. Too bad this skill sometimes is overlooked by audiences.

Im not spanish either, but she was the best. There’s something very beautiful about her presence and voice, her eyes… I felt the same as when i watched ‘Amar pelos dois’. You dont have to shout high notes to make a great performance. Although I didn’t understand a word, the song still touched me deeply, reminiscent of old times. It’s something you just can’t explain to someone else.
