Eurovision news from the Czech Republic has been coming in thick and fast these past couple of months. And now Česká Televize have revealed the eight competing acts vying for the honour of representing them in Tel Aviv.

Back in December we were informed that the broadcaster’s national final would commence on the 7th of January with people all over Europe being able to get involved. Not so long after, the republic’s previous entrant, Mikolas Josef, revealed on Instagram that the contest would be slightly larger than last year’s edition, allowing two more acts to take part and thus taking the total number of artists up to eight.

Czech celebrity web site “Celebrity Time” has published what it says is the the invitation to the January 7 #ESCZ press conference. _____ The invitation translates like this: “We invite you to a press conference on Eurovision song CZ, on which Czech TV will present all eight finalists who will compete for winning the national Eurovision round. This will take place on Monday, January 7, at 13:00 in Vnitroblock (Tusarova 31, Prague 7).” ____ “The finalists in alphabetical order are Hana Barbara, Tomáš Bo?ek, Andrea Holá, Pamela Koka, Lake Malawi fronted by Albert ?erný, Barbor Mochow, Jakub Ondra and Jara Vymer. Also attended by the Czech delegation, Jan Bors, and the creative producer Jan Potm?šil. Libor Bou?ek will introduce the whole meeting. Eurovision Song CZ will decide on the winner to represent the Czech Republic in Tel Aviv. The press conference will present the application and voting system, songs and video clips of the artists.” _____ #eurovisionsongcontest #eurovision #eurovision2019

Who is taking part?

Around December, the Czech national broadcaster confirmed that they had received 300 entries for their national final. Today, Czech website Celebrity Time  released a list of the eight competing acts in the national final. They did so by re-publishing the invitation to a press conference sent to them by the broadcaster. In alphabetical order, they are:

  1. Hana Barbara
  2. Tomáš Boček
  3. Andrea Holá
  4. Pamela Koky
  5. Lake Malawi feat. Albert Černý
  6. Barbora Mochowa
  7. Jakub Omdra
  8. Jara Vymer

While the artists’ songs have yet to be officially announced, we reported here on Wiwibloggs about Jakub Ondra’s intention to represent the Czech Republic at Eurovision previously. Speaking to Seznamz Pravy, Jakub stated that he had submitted the song “Space Sushi” to ESCZ. Given that his name appears on the final list of participants, one can speculate that his application has been successful.

Other noteworthy names are Pamela Koky and Andrea Holá. Pamela was a member of the Czech delegation in Lisbon performing her role as a backing vocalist for Mikolas Josef. Andrea, on the other hand, earned notoriety by competing in the Czech-Slovak version of The Voice in 2014, earning a very respectable 4th place.

In addition to the eight artists being announced, the article mentions an invitation to a press conference, which will be held tomorrow (7th January) at 13:00 CET in Vnitroblock – Turasova 31, Prague 7.  The event will play host to numerous key players in the Czech Eurovision scene, namely: the Czech head of delegation, Jan Bors, and creative producer Jan Potměšil.  Furthermore, the conference will formally present the eight acts and songs as well as give details on how the voting procedure will take place.

What do we know about the voting thus far?

Earlier, we reported that nearly 300 entries had been submitted for the competition. Not bad for a country that got its first ever Top 10 finish this year, eh? The voting will begin in January when videos will be made available in the official Eurovision app. Viewers — both in the Czech Republic and internationally — will be able to listen to and vote on the competing songs. At the same time, an international jury will also assess and vote on the songs.

Only votes cast from the Czech Republic will be counted as part of the televote. However, fan votes made from outside Czechia will count as one jury member and will contribute to the overall jury tally.

The votes will be tallied up and the winning act will be announced at the end of January.

What do you think of the eight competing artists? Are you excited for the songs and press conference tomorrow? Let us know in the comments below!

There is not only “fake” Lana , but also total plagiarism of me beloved Hurts. Till the last point . Quite brave , I guess, they will pay a lot of money :))

I choose Barbora (Del Ray) Mochowa – that is the best out of this bad boring group. I guess that the Czech Republic goes the “hard way” this year. Hope they will survive the Semi Final (x-fingers).

I vote for: NONE of the above. Sorry, I really believe they may struggle to reach the final. Nothing impactful, nothing unique, nothing outstanding. It’s like I’ve heard it all before. I was hopeful for the sole Czech language song, but even that let me down.
Sorry, Czech Republic, you can do better!

Don´t know why but “Don´t know why” could get a lot of attention among all international voters.
Friend of a Friend, True colors and Easy to believe are not bad but easy to forget.

Well, I’m czech and tbh I thought our national would have better songs than this… But anyway my two favorites are Barbora Mochowa and Lake Malawi. The song True Colors sounds nice but it doesn’t do much for me, but it’s still one of the best songs in the national final 😀 I will vote for Lake Malawi but I don’t think that he or somebody else will do as good or better than Mikolas last year.

Space Sushi and True Colors are the only ones which have at least some chance of reaching the finals. Space Sushi is certainly the most memorable one. It’s really ”love it or hate it” song (I am leaning more towards the ”love it” side). True Colors is classy and her voice is lovely, but only time will tell can it stand out next to other ballads.

My favourite is True Colours. Can you believe that the favourite in Spain is Space Sushi? Send help, please. In my country there is no taste.

The songs aren’t that great. I vote for Pam Rabbit, overall the best. Tomaš and Barbora are good as well, but I don’t see it advancing to the final. The rest is quite boring. Space Sushi is nothing special at all. My ranking: 1. Pam Rabbit, 2. Tomaš Bo?ek, 3. Barbora Machowa, 4. Hana Barbara, 5. Jara Vymer, 6. Lake Malawi, 7. Jakub Ondra, 8. Andrea Hola

Even though I am from the Czech republic I am not crazy about this selection… and that’s sad. I think only two songs which can be at least called eurovision contender are “True Colours” and “Friend of A friend”. My personal favourite is “True colours”, but I don’t think it has the immediacy needed for eurovision.

I think Lake will win, it is the best one!
But I don’t Think Czech Republic will do as well as they did with Mikolas, none of the songs are that strong enough!

oh gosh – Lake Malawi …….that is like ESC Sweden 2018 – “men without balls sing high notes” – that is not the music I prefer but hey, we all have a different taste of music.

Oh come on, why are men not allowed to sing high notes without having their masculinity insulted? As you say, we all have a different taste… Then please just share your taste without being mean? Some of the greatest male artists of the 20th century sang like that too anyway.

I think i like friend of a friend and true colors the most.
Friend of a friend is very quirky and could be pretty fun live on stage. That keyboard sound in the chorus gets kinda annoying though xD
True colors sounds great, but the ending is pretty abrupt.

8. Hana Barbara/Poslední slova tob? – song was clearly writen in english and then translated to czech – but sounds like it was translated through google translate, music is great, but lyrics don’t seem to fit 7. Jara Vymer/On My Knees – not bad, but doesn’t stand out 6. Andrea Holá/Give Me a Hint – I like her voice, but the song isn’t special 5. Pam Rabbit/Easy to Believe – kinda reminds me Dance You Off, it’s generic 4. Lake Malawi/Friend of a Friend – good song, I think it has a chance 3. Tomáš Bo?ek/Don’t Know Why – this… Read more »

A.K.A Lana del Rey copycat. But don’t forget that copying others doesn’t help in Eurovision. It will easily get crushed between other competitors and end up like Martina Barta (CZ17).

Jakub Ondra is the clear winner tbh. That song’s just so crazy. 😀 It will definitely stand out if they’ll stage it properly. It’s a love or hate entry and they usually do well in Eurovision.

that is what I would call “man without balls sing high notes” music ……… same as ESC Sweden 2018 ……but maybe you are right and the juries will hype it like Sweden last year.

These are some pretty good songs. I’m not sure how any would perform on the stage.

I think Lake Malawi ‘s my favourite. Although Barbora Mochowa with her Lana Del Rey vibes are a very close second! Tomas Bocek deserves a bit of a mention too!
