We have R’n’B sass from Anna-Lisa Kumoji, modern schlager from KEiiNO, and an emotional Norwegian-language ballad from Eurovision alum Morland. What else could a national selection need? Melodi Grand Prix has it all and we can’t wait to see how this turns out….
On January 25 Norway’s producers gave us the 10 songs vying for Eurovision 2019, and there are some interesting options to choose from. American Idol star Chris Medina makes an appearance, as does previous Melodi Grand Prix acts Carina Dahl, Erlend Bratland and Tom Hugo. And spicing things up is the outrageous rocker Hank Von Hell.
The ten acts will compete in the grand final on Saturday 2 March, to see who will follow in Alexander Rybak’s footsteps to represent Norway. The show will be hosted by Heidi Ruud Ellingsen and Kåre Magnus Bergh.
Based on all the tweets we’re seeing on social media, there are already some favourites among the fandom. But let us know your favourite in the poll below.
[polldaddy poll=10226079]Is your favourite in the lead? Can this year’s MGP winner take their semi like Alexander Rybak did in Lisbon? Which song will work with the mass audience that actually watches Eurovision? Let us know in the comments below.
Look. Don’t say I’m pathetic because I do in fact read everyone’s hate comments about every national final and after every song is picked. But anyway this is a weak selection. Only one or two songs have the quality for a borderline qualifier while the rest are either bland, meaningless and even some I find trouble listening to. My favourite is Chris Medina. As generic as it is this is of all of them the most easy listening and Spotify friendly. But I know that Norway is going to go with KEIINO despite the creepy backing vocals.
I finally heard all ten songs in peace and here are my thoughts and observations (subjective as always): 1. En livredd mann – Hauntingly beautiful as Morland’s other work. Lyrics are amazing! Please keep it in Norwegian! 🙂 2. Spirit in the Sky – Really memorable and special! Three voices blend in perfectly and has a true Nordic feel! 🙂 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. The Bubble – Catchy and likable. A song I really like! 4. Feel – Very lovely. The melody is great, so is her voice. It would need a bit more power to stand out. 5. Mr. Unicorn –… Read more »
Well, this is an easy one. But I won’t spoil it for you.
Enjoy Melodi Grand Prix. 🙂
(It’s a long wait until March, by the way.)
So long that I probably don’t want to listen to “Spirit in the Sky” anymore. Mørland’s song on the other hand I might still enjoy. So I will spoil it for you: Mørland. 😛
We have to wait over 4 weeks now to find out. 😛
Keiino will (hopefully) be so much fun on stage. I can see them doing really well with the televote.
Overall a pretty good line-up. Maybe there isn’t a winner, but there are a lot of enjoyable songs. My top 10 at the moment: 1. Morland – En Livredd Mann (7.5/10) 2. Ingrid Berg Mehus – Feel (7.5/10) 3. Adrian Jorgensen – The Bubble (7.25/10) 4. D’Sound – Mr. Unicorn (6.75/10) 5. Carina Dalh – Hold Me Down (6.75/10) 6. Keiino – Spirit in the Sky (6.5/10) 7. Chris Medina – We Try (6.25/10) 8. Hank Von Hell – Fake It (6/10) 9. Anna-Lisa Kumoji – Holla (5.5/10) 10. Erlend Bratland – Sing for You (0/10). A cheap plagiarism of… Read more »
It’s Ingrid, D’sound or Mørland for me. Unfortunately, I’m in the unpopular opinion : ‘Spirit in the Sky’ sounded a tad too typical-winner-idea for my taste.
What do you find typical about it?
I dont care if Spirit in the sky is typical esc bait, all i know is: I WANT THIS IN ESC. Totally hooked on that song.
Spirit in the Sky is overrated
Where is Ryk?
Morland is the only option in my opinion. Pure Norwegian and the most original. A lyrical masterpiece!!!
Yassss
Hear hear!
There’s also an English version that he’d probably end up singing at ESC.
(I hope not– the Norwegian version is one of my two favorites too.)
I don’t know about lyrical masterpiece, since I don’t speak Norwegian, but I looooooove the song! I adored ‘Who We Are’ last year and ‘A Monster Like Me’ in 2015. This man is a freakin’ genius!
Where are the rumoured acts? I can’t see the Greenlandic singer Julie Berthelsen 🙁 Or German Finalist of last year Ryk.
This post is about the Norweigan Melodi Grand Prix (usually just abbreviated as MGP)
Both are rumors for the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix (DMGP), Denmark’s version of Melodi Grand Prix
Fake It is my fave from the national final season so far, and Spirit in the Sky is also great.
‘Feel’, followed by ‘En Livredd Mann’, ‘Fake It’, and ‘Spirit in the Sky’.
Keiino is best. I hope they will soud simillar l on stage in Spectrum arena in Oslo in MGP final like they sound in audio version. With this song Norway is contender for win Eurovision 2019. I predict winner in Norway in 2013,2015,2017 , my favorite was 2nd in 2014, 4th in 2016 and 2 nd in 2018
Come on… please… Spirit in the Sky is good but it’s pure eurofan bait, no way it can get near to the top in the ESC final
Song Spirit in the sky is for me is so much better then Toy ,Fuego who fisnished on First and second place last year.
I wonder if y’all who now love Spirit In The Sky, had Saara Aalto among you favourites last year? I mean, I also love it but at the same time realise that all this happening now is super unfair to her&her song…
Saara was not my favorites. My favorite in finish final was Domino. My favorite was Israel before rehearsal, after in final was Italy.
And some people thought Saara Aalto “Monster” was a copy of DJ Toxic’s “Secret Melody”. So I guess you think it’s super unfair to him and his song?
Nope because he didn’t participate in ESC finishing among the lasts. I suppose you got me wrong. For me, unfair (and hypocritical) is to like only one song of these two and to dislike another while they are pretty similar. Or you like both, or none of them. Unfair would be if Spirit In The Sky will finish in the top 10 in Tel Aviv. But Eurovision is an unfair contest and I am quite used to that…
Veta. The rules of plagiarism is not only for esc. If you copy another artists work it is not fair, no matter what. Your have dobbel standar. Well just as you know Keiino is not inspired by “Monster” they are inspired of ” Secret melody”, and as you say
, than it is ok. So nothing to worry about :D.
First of all, you are not a musical expert to say if there is a case of plagiarism or the songs are just similar. Second, I don’t have any problem with similar songs just as they are, I have a problem with such a songs finishing on comletely different places at ESC and people treating them differently. You are getting me wrong for the second time.
First of all If the song is a plagiarism it will be discvalified from the competition Second; I have not said I am an musikal expert. Third: Rules in ESC should be the same for all, Plagiarism is about respect for other peoples work, ESC or not ESC. Fifth you are not the jury, you’re just a complainer with dobbel standar. You say it is ok to “steal” others work only if it’s not partisipating in ESC. And that is the end of the discussion for me. Good Luck with complaning.
When will Melodifestivalne snippets for the first semifinal be available? Today or Tommorow?
I think we can expect them today! They usually reveal them 2 days before the semi-final.
Omg I’m so hyped!
they’ve just gone live on SVT’s website. Dont get too excited tho – there’s nothing that especially stands out….
Don’t get too excited about Denmark, either.
KEiiNO or Fake It, obviously!
My favs as well
If Ingrid or Chris doesn’t win I think Norway will stay in the semi… I like their songs, the rest…?
My picks too. Might throw Carina in as a possibility.
So for me
KEIINO – SPIRIT IN THE SKY
NNA-LISA KUMOJI – HOLLA
MØRLAND – EN LIVREDD MANN
Spirit in the sky remindes me of
jasmine thompson -adore.
Mørland with En livredd mann!!!This is so good!!!And finally a song in norwegian, plus the lyrics have a great meaning about fears.
Without a doubt the best entry here. Hands down.
I want it to win, but I *fear* it will be second to KEiiNO, so i kind of already adjusted for that.
Keiino could be a mess live if they can’t stage it well (Hopefully they do). At least with morland we more or less know we are going to get decent staging with great vocals.
While Kiino’s song is interesting and I like it, my favorité is D’sound with Mr. Unicorn. There’s just something about this song I love.
That disco funk realness, of course!
Mørland and KEiiNO. The only two contenders here. If they don’t mess up, I am pretty sure KEiiNO is going to win by a landslide. Despite its lyrical shortcomings, “Spirit in the Sky” it is pleasant enough for me to enjoy. The alternating of male and female vocals works very well here.
Keiino is so overrated..
You always have to look at the alternatives in a national selection. Given the choices, I’ll take what I can get.
Morland is the best option. Keiino is predictable and boring
