In 2017, she was our Spirit Animal in Estonia’s Eesti Laul. Kerli was a fan favourite and the hype was justified around her entry, which finished second behind “Verona” in the national final. Her career has continued to grow since, releasing numerous singles. This culminated in the release of her album Shadow Works in February. She has also released the music video for “Savages”, the album’s lead single.

“Savages” — Kerli

The music video marries the purest of whites and the darkest of blacks in a very artistic production. Kerli herself plays both roles as light meets dark. Kerli sings about “making love like savages” over some very steamy visuals as dark and light come together. In the end, light Kerli is carried away by the darkness, in a rather sinister ending of the narrative.

Both the song and the music video are very true to the artistic style we’ve come to expect from Kerli. The lyrics have a dark edge to them, with lines such as “as I choke on flames” and “I walk barefoot on a field of swords”. The imagery is sharp and it is coupled by the visuals in the music video. “Savages” was originally released on November 30 but the recent release of the music video brings the song to life.

It’s not all about making love though. Kerli sings “I’ll lick the poison right off your kiss”. This is a dangerous love affair and Kerli will “fall on rosy thorns for a taste of lethal bliss”. The climax of the song certainly achieves that.

Shadow Works — Kerli

“Savages” is certainly an appropriate choice for lead single. Kerli’s album Shadow Works is a series of masterpieces. “Better” was released as the second single in January, continuing to explore personal themes. “Better” sounds true to Kerli’s sound while having more of a mainstream appeal than “Savages”. She sings “when I went through the worst, I came out better”, exploring her difficult past and how it led her to this point in her life.

Legends” is the third single from Shadow Works, released in February. “Legends” is packed with a beat befitting a rock or metal song, while still aligning with the sound and message of Kerli’s previous releases. She sings “we’re already legends, we’re just young”, suggesting this could be an anthem for today’s youth.

Shadow Works is full of memorable hits. Songs such as “Everybody Bleeds the Same” and “Where the Dark Things Are” each explore very different sides of Kerli. While some may argue that the various songs feel disjointed as an album, Shadow Works showcases Kerli’s versatility as an artist. It feels like a perfect pastiche of everything she can do.

What do you think of Kerli’s new music video and album? Do you hope the “Spirit Animal” songstress will return to Eesti Laul? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ve been her fan since “Love is Dead,” it’s been 11 years already, I can’t believe it! She’s definitely one of the singers in my personal ‘artist wishlist’ for Eurovision… Hope I’ll see her one day 🙂 (together with Eluveitie, Jain and many others…)

One thing I owe to Eurovision is that it helped me discover Kerli. Love is Dead is an exceptional album.
