She sees 22 and thinks of you. But at last weekend’s London Eurovision Party all we could focus on was Sarah McTernan’s Irish charm.

And she had plenty to say! We discussed her soulful Eurovision 2019 entry 22, as well as her attempts to represent San Marino last year and her brush with Ireland’s biggest pageant show.

Our Deban started the conversation by asking her about the Rose Of Tralee — an annual beauty pageant which takes place every August and sees women from across Ireland and the Irish diaspora compete to be crowned the fairest in the land.

Sarah entered a preliminary heat in 2018 and says taking part was “the best craic ever” (Irish slang for fun or banter). She described the contest as more about personality than looks, which is why she liked it so much.

Deban asks if she were Miss Ireland, what would she like to see in the world? Sarah says she’d “make the world happier, with everything that’s going on now”.

Sarah McTernan Interview London Eurovision Party 2019

The conversation soon moved to her previous Eurovision attempts. When an open call was made for San Marino last year, Sarah entered hoping to represent the micro-state in Lisbon.

She had been working with Ylva and Linda Persson ever since her 2015 stint on The Voice Of Ireland. The twin sisters convinced her to give 1in360 a shot. Sadly we didn’t see her appear in the live rounds of the selection. But persistence pays off and she’s here to slay this year!

Sarah also talks about a psychic encounter. Some years back, she met a fortune teller who predicted The Voice and Eurovision. She has been in touch since, but he has yet to reveal her final result for Tel Aviv.

New music from Sarah McTernan

We can expect an EP from Sarah soon — she’s currently in the process of creating it. Her contest track “22” will make an appearance, as well as some new “more soulful” tracks. Soul is her favourite genre to sing, but she also loves a bit of pop. With a voice like hers, we can’t wait to hear what’s next.

To wrap up, Sarah teaches Deban the perfect pageant pose. She’s looking fabulous!

Do you think Sarah can break out of her tough semi? She’s performing second in semi two — 22! Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I dont like her. There’s something fake about her presentation. Her song is also pretty weak. This has all the ingredients to fail.

Sarah looks really pretty without makeup (or with light makeup, I can’t really tell)

She looks very American but she sounds Irish haha I absolutely love her song. very laid back and nostalgic and different to the rest of entries. I do not get why they put in the 2nd spot (unlucky one, except for Bosnia ha!!) I am not sure she has enough chances to qualify but then again people were doubting the chances of last year’s Irish entry in the toughest semifinal! I have my fingers crossed her team has prepared a flawless performance that captures the song’s emotions. I pray the juries will save it, so many eastern countries voting for… Read more »

Caucasians in USA are descendents of Europeans. So white Americans look like Europeans 🙂

Catchy song and good unique voice. Qualification will depend on staging. It needs to be memorable. I worry that RTE have hinted that it will be simplistic. It needs to be wow for this song to qualify.

Maybe they mean simplistic like Netherlands 2014 and Ireland 2018 but I do agree that it needs something memorable (not cheesy) to stand out.

I don’t think the psychic’s gonna have hard time predicting her placing, haha. This whole story kinda reminded me of Yardena Arazi in 1988, though I hope Sarah’s gonna have more luck than her.

It has dawned on me that 22 can be linked to a four-leaf clover. 2 on a side, 2 on the other, 22. And the four-leaf clover is a sign of good luck in Ireland. Eirinn go Brach!

Yes that’s right, it’s the shamrock that has symbolism in Ireland, but at the same time, the four-leaf clover is a sign of good-luck.
