She gave an interval performance to remember in Israel.

But true to form Madonna‘s performance at Eurovision 2019 was not without controversy.

And it caught the attention of a local politician in Rotterdam for all the wrong reasons.

Maurice Meeuwissen, chairman of Rotterdam’s political party PVV, announced on Twitter earlier this week that he would propose a ‘Madonna ban’ for Eurovision 2020. A ban which says that Madonna won’t be welcome at Eurovision 2020 in the Netherlands next year. Especially not if the event would take place in Rotterdam.

PVV – Partij voor de Vrijheid or Party for Freedom – is a nationalist, right-wing, populist party in the Netherlands.

The chairman announced on Twitter that the ‘Madonna ban’ would be discussed and voted on during the city council on Tuesday 9th of July.

The Palestinian flags that Madonna used in her performance in Tel Aviv this year were the reason that caused this proposal.

Newspaper ‘Het Parool’ spoke to the Queen of Pop last month, after her Eurovision performance. In this interview she addresses the controversy around her performance in the grand final:

“I was really happy with my performance and I did exactly what I planned to do. I’m proud of the message I conveyed: peace between Palestinians and Israel. That was what I came to do”.

Will we see Madonna at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2020 again? There will be no doubt, the answer is no. She mentioned that she will skip the event this time. She adds: “You don’t need any more trouble”.

After the city council took place, it became clear that Maurice Meeuwissen was the only one who actually voted for his own proposal. The motion was turned down by the majority of votes. Other political parties called the motion “ridiculous”. For the most part, they are looking forward to welcoming Eurovision (and Madonna if she has a change of heart) in Rotterdam.

Whether the contest will be held in Rotterdam or not is still to be decided.

The few cities handed in their bid books earlier this week and they are being discussed right now. Broadcaster NPO announced that from next week on, there will only be two cities left to choose from. Will it be Rotterdam, Utrecht, Arnhem, s-Hertogenbosch or Maastricht? The broadcaster plans to announce the host city next month.

I truly believe Madonna’s performance vocals were sabataged or tampered with deliberately. If one looks back on her performances, she has never sounded that bad. I doubt she would want to bother coming back to do a Eurovision performance again anyway, she doesn’t need to.

The real reason she should be banned is because she can’t sing live anymore. It was horrendous.

Can someone explain me why Madonna’s performance is not on the official DVD?

They cut it out due to her showing the Palestinian flag in her performance.

It’s not just that. Madonna was heavily criticized for her vocal performance. She uploaded a “corrected” version to her own youtube channel. She probably objected the idea of having her show officially documented.

I don’t think that’s why. Like with Justin Timberlake, they probably cut it out because they do not have the rights to profit off her music, at least not without giving a cut to her.

Madonna was simply an interval act this year…it changes every year, it’s never the same. So why is this an issue?
I hate when politicians or mainstream musicians think they know what ESC is and protest etc etc when really they actually know nothing.
I’m sure Madonna will be touring her latest album anyway by May of 2020.
HOWEVER! I don’t think Netherlands should get international (American) interval acts. Justin Timberlake and Madonna has been enough. Get someone Dutch.

It’s not either/or. They can get somebody Dutch, and an international star. Like the way KAN got an Israeli star and Madonna. One does not exclude the other.

I paid no attention to her performance, so didn’t even notice the flags on their backs.

Enough is enough really… Madonna has never been known with her perfect voice or high octaves. She is a show girl, a material girl. She was a trendsetter, game changer and fearless one since the very beginning. Even if she goes up there and stand for 10 minutes without singing or speaking we will applause for her. Being Madonna is not easy. Stop crying here and go stream God Control.

Lets take aside the fact that people from the government are dealing with such a BS rather than focusing on something, lets say, important. Do they think that Madonna is some sort of integral part of Eurovision? They think that she just performs every year or something? Why would you want to ban someone that never intended to come anyway? How dumb is that? Almost as dumb as the Irish petition to boycott Eurovision 2019 if it’s held in Jerusalem after Tel Aviv was already announced as a host.

Irish petition was actually to boycott going to Israel regardless of hosting city.
The petition was that we should shouldn’t have even crossed the border to Israel in the first place for the competition.
So not as ‘dumb’ as you might say.

I’m talking about this, and it is as dumb as it can get. It’s actually way dumber that this “Madonna ban”.

But I guess you guys decided to finish dead last as a protest, then well done.

That’s just 1 person protesting, which brings me to the point about politicians and mainstream entertainers should keep out of ESC when they clearly don’t know anything about it.
I think we came last genuinely because we are cràp at Eurovision, I don’t think it was a protest as such.

I’m guessing Rotterdam doesn’t have any real life issues for their government to resolve.

Is this what right wing parties want to deal with when they get power? Focusing on non issues rather than real issues? How was that even up for debatte?

Ariso Light

Oh please, this is pathetic. It just goes to show how this party clearly doesn’t actually focus on IMPORTANT issues.

Agreed. Relax, R’dam; there is no chance of a Madonna encore. The EBU is not going to tarnish its reputation any further by repeating this farce. Nor will they allow the guy who paid for Madonna’s appearance invite himself into the contest preparation process again by paying for someone else’s appearance.

Good to hear she isn’t banned, however in spite of this, I do expect the Dutch to pick better and perhaps more suitable artists for their shows.

The only reason these kind of parties do this is to get click bait articles in the press. Maybe the best reaction by the press is to completely ignore these stunts.

Really? After the shambles of a performance this year (was there any note in tune?) They’d actually consider having her back again. Go back to showing off the countries own talent before asking major stars.

These are politicians with a brain the size of a peanut discussing eurovision. The show producers would in reality never invite her the next year again off course.

Is he out of touch with what is happening in Eurovision? Madonna is not a staple artist who will sing in the succeeding years. We all know that is reserved for Valentina Monetta.

Is more likely for Iceland to send H a t a r i again (or to see them as interval act), than to see the same artist as interval act two years in a row. Nobody would give her 1,3 mil again for two songs. This politician is really silly, I think he doesn’t even know about H a t a r i banner.
