She’s the Romanian star who was selected to represent her country at Eurovision 2020. Now, following the contest’s cancellation, Roxen has stated in an Instagram live session that she will wave Romania’s flag at Eurovision 2021.

Broadcaster TVR has not officially confirmed any plans for their Eurovision 2021 selection process. But, Roxen appears to be very keen to have her chance to perform on the Eurovision stage.

Update 17:20 GMT: Roxen has reached out to wiwibloggs and revealed that at the moment she does not know for sure whether she will represent Romania at Eurovision 2021.

Roxen states plans to represent Romania at Eurovision 2021

On Monday, Roxen participated in an Instagram live session with Utv.ro where she was asked about Eurovision and whether she would represent Romania at Eurovision 2021.

Responding to the questions, Roxen stated that she would indeed be doing so:

So for those who keep asking me if I will represent Romania at next year’s Eurovision, and haven’t kept themselves up to date with the news, yes, I will be going next year too! Yeeees

This statement comes after Roxen made her desire to go to Eurovision 2021 heard in the immediate aftermath of Eurovision 2020’s cancellation. In a statement on TVR’s website, the “Alcohol You” singer said:

I am very glad that I was chosen to represent Romania at Eurovision and I thank everyone for their confidence and support, the public, the composers and the team that is always with me. … It is a difficult time for us all, but with patience and correct information, we can get over it and resume all our activities. And why not, let’s go back to ESC2021.

Liana Stanciu, head of the Romanian delegation for Eurovision 2020, revealed that TVR would consider all their options:

The Eurovision team will analyze the consequences of the decisions taken by the organizers and will evaluate all the options … Now, the most important thing is to be all healthy. And let’s not forget that Eurovision has the power to surprise us at the next edition!

TVR will officially confirm their plans for Eurovision 2021 in the coming months. However, following the announcement by the EBU, Roxen will not be able to perform her Eurovision 2020 selected song “Alcohol You” at the contest next year, but would need to submit another song.

Earlier this year, Roxen presented five songs at Selecția Națională 2020 for the Romanian public to decide between. They ultimately chose “Alcohol You”. It is currently unknown whether TVR will do a similar selection process next year or choose through other means.

Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest

Romania has participated 20 times at Eurovision since its debut in 1994. In that period, the country has finished in the top ten on six occasions. Its best results were in 2005 and 2010 when Luminița Anghel & Sistem and Paula Seling & Ovi finished in third place.

Most recently, Ester Peony represented Romania at Eurovision 2019 with the song “On A Sunday”. Peony failed to make it to the final, finishing thirteenth in the semi-final. This was Romania’s second non-qualification in a row.

I hope for a second chance for Roxen to represent Romania at ESC 2021 with a song that will be so beautiful as “Alcohol you”, witch was my favorite this year.

I don’t like her voice, they should pick somebody else. How about Laura Bretan?

Omg, I’d love Laura Bretan to cover ‘Alcohol You.’ Alcohol god when I’m drunk.

I had never in my life heard of a worse opinion. But again it’s a opinion, so it’s OK. It’s just that I massively disagree with it.

I sincerely hope they can repeat or even improve their song writing success next year. It will be difficult because unlike most others, they really raised the bar this year. ‘Alcohol You’ is not lost, but certainly a loss for Eurovision. A HUGE one.

What I hope is that she does not sabotage herself again in the show, showing deep disrespect for the composers and writers of those songs

I’m really pleased about this. I hope she does something as edgy as “Alcohol You” again next year.

Meanwhile, Roxen launched a new song. It is called “Over and Over” and it is a featuring with PAX, aka Viky Red, one of the composers and producer of “Alcohol you” 🙂
