Netflix’s forthcoming film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, featuring Hollywood stars Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, is gaining traction in the Eurovision fandom. Recently, the first single from the soundtrack, “Volcano Man“, was covered by Eurovision winners Alexander Rybak and Jamala. This week, Moldova’s Eurovision 2019 star Anna Odobescu shares her emotional take on the song.

Anna Odobescu covers Netflix’s “Volcano Man”

Sitting casually on a red sofa and clutching a wireless microphone, Anna delivers stellar vocals. She abandons humour in favour of soul. In her cover version, she belts from her diaphragm whilst giving us a unique take on the song. With the accompaniment of the song’s standard backing track, Anna’s vocal flourishes, particularly towards the end, puts “Volcano Man” in soulful disco territory.

Yes, this may be a simple cover, but it goes a long way in reminding us once again of Anna Odobescu’s immense talent. In the video, Anna complements her bold t-shirt with loop silver earrings and barely-there make-up.

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Anna explains:

“The Story of Fire Saga is all about living the Eurovision dream, so it feels like home to me. I guess it was an instant reaction, wanting to cover “Volcano Man” and give my rendition. It’s like stepping on the “Big stage”, once again. The contest itself, has always been a nonstop inspiration, so you could say I’m reliving the dream!

“I’m really anticipating to watch the film, it sure looks so much fun! Undoubtedly, Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams are taking this to another level. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Once thing’s for sure… We’re in for a treat! He is hilarious and she is a true gem, I can’t wait to see them team up on the road to Euro-fame. Who knows who they’ll be up against or who they’ll end up meeting on their journey?! We should be expecting surprises on the screen… I know how it’s like when the adrenaline hits you and I am waiting for this film, to fill in the void with some Eurovision joy. Count me in!”

Yup, they definitely did her dirty to let her perform “Stay” in 2019. Her vocals are insane.

It’s really heart-warming to see Eurovision alumni, who may not have had the ideal outcome at Eurovision, results-wise, still view their Eurovision experience as their career highlight, and remain loyal fans and ambassadors of the contest afterwards.

Judging by the released video of “Volcano man”, I believe the movie is going to flop.
